Madden NFL 17 News Post

Madden NFL 17 will feature a new approach to the biggest decisions you'll make in Franchise Mode aptly titled, "Big Decisions". In a new blog post, EA details this new feature.

Quote:
"Big Decisions

Big Decisions come to you with the right information at the right time. Do you start your star QB with that lingering injury, or go to your unproven back-up with a playoff spot on the line? In Madden NFL 17 on Xbox One and PlayStation®4, Big Decisions begin a new direction in your career mode experience changing the way you approach your gameplay strategy for every match up."

Below is a breakdown of the big decisions you'll face:

  • Season Goal - The first big decision you’ll make as a coach or player in the regular season is to set your season goal. As a coach, you can decide whether you are going to make the playoffs or shoot low with a 7-win season.
  • Injuries: Once doctors have medically cleared a player that was hurt earlier in the season, you can either play him with a lingering injury or sit him to heal to 100%.
  • Acquisitions: Picking up free agents and players on the trade block is easier than ever with the new Acquisitions menu. You will be able to easily browse the available players by position and compare them to your current depth chart.
  • Re-Signing Players: When your players are on the last year of their contract, you can now re-sign them using a more intuitive menu. All the information you need to decide if you want to retain the player is available.
  • Spending XP: Your players progress through the season as they earn experience points (XP) from training and by completing weekly game goals, drive goals, fantasy goals, season goals, and career goals.
  • Cutting Players: During the preseason, you will now be presented with a new menu layout where your coaches will recommend players to cut based on position depth and player skills. This allows you to make key decisions about player retention quickly so you can progress through the preseason.
  • Free Agent Bidding: While bidding for players in the off-season, you will now be able to easily see your depth chart at the various positions so you know who to bid on.
What do you think of the new Big Decisions feature in franchise mode?

The only new things in this are the ability to set your own season goal, and to bring a player back from injury a week or 2 early. Everything else has been in the game, just rebranded under a new menu.

Don't know why you can only set season goal as a coach or player. I would have thought an Owner would be able to set a season goal for their head coach.

This is all sounding promising! Nice additions.

Love the direction, it's the execution that worries me.

All of these XP based "improvements" we're buggy and flawed and overall you could say negatively affected the gameplay, so much to the point that you had to use the 32 team setup method to try and trouble-shoot you're way around a lot of the issues regarding the XP system.

If all this works, that's phenomenal. If its all buggy like last years release, then this will simply been seen as more ways to bug up franchise mode.

I hope there are some under the hood safeguards in place to prevent 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and even to a lesser extent 4th round picks from being cut within the first 2-3 years of their careers due to low overall. The AI should be working to develop and make those players work, not letting them rot on the bench and cutting them early in their careers as a "Big Decision" type thing.

I don't want to see a bunch of high draft picks in FA in year one or two for me to pick up and develop myself. The AI for computer controlled teams needs to make sure they aren't drafting or signing tons of guys at the same position and cutting ones that never got a shot to develop for them.

The thing I like the most is that the big decisions affect commentary. My hopes is that they talk about other big decisions besides injuries. Like I would like to hear "This head coach has made it known that he expects his team to make the playoffs"
Hopefully the big decisions commentary is recurring throughout season, especially season goals. My biggest gripe about franchise is that it feels like exhibition games not season

Now can we edit the draft classes? That really was what killed the series for me, among the other things. This is a good start but I want to know if we can edit names, height, weight, etc and draft classes.

Can you specifically edit drat classes? No.
Can you edit rookies when they are drafted(name, college, height, and weight)? Yes.

You can edit the rookies names, appearance, equipment, ratings, and college after they have been drafted.

You're being very.. Shallow minded. You're missing all the great additions that the community has wanted and belittled it because they aren't your top features. You've made this apparent in multiple threads now, we get it, you don't like it, no need to keep minimizing the additions.

How is this shadow minded? I stated clearly that most of this is simply rebranded under a new menu. The only true new feature under "big decisions" is setting your own season goal. Everything else was just streamlined. I'm not belittling any actual additions. Simply expected more for what they called huge improvements.

Early rounders shouldn't be much of an issue. But 4th rounders get cut irl, esp after 2-3 years, sometimes having to play on PS or just never to be heard from again. It definitely happens, it just all depends on the team's depth and the player's rating. But it's better than just cutting these same players all together and hoping they are in the selected bucket of FAs the game allows when you may need them.

Just look at 2014 draft alone...Logan Thomas, Shaq Evans, Carl Bradford, Khairi Fortt, Jalen Saunders, Jaylen Watkins...

All 4th rounders that have been placed on PS and some already been through 2 or 3 teams before finding a home on a 53-man roster.

I'm sure you are aware of the developers bringing up about priorities, timing and resources too.

Peter Moore stated today it was the greatest improvements to franchise mode in 4 years, and technically, he could be correct in that statement. There will be some people that will agree with him, some people that will feel it's somewhere in the middle(me) and some people will completely disagree with that statement.

One person's junk is another person's art.

Not everyone will be happy with all the improvments Madden has made on paper, including gameplay. I'm not a user of roster editing and I'm not sure yet on Big Decisions, but I know full customization has been the #1 request to put back in from their customer base.

If everything works out in late August with game play, presentation and CFM as it appears now, we could have a darn good NFL video football game.

At least this shows us the developers have been listening and communicating to their customers, even though some of the customers don't have what they personally want.

Where the heck is the upgrade to the challenge system? Time to start another drumbeat like I did for DPI.

It's definitely the greatest improvement in their last 4 years but sadly that's only because they have done a whole lot of nothing in that time frame.

I wouldn't say "nothing" but you're about half correct in that statement. Still, they haven't deceived us or anything and have delivered on what they promised.
