NHL 17 News Post

NHL 17 Producers are answering questions on their Ask NHL page, similar to how they did it last year. If you have questions, make sure to submit them here.

We've posted some of the questions and answers below, click here to read them all.

How has skating been improved?

Skating has been improved in a lot of ways. We looked at responsiveness in pivots, ability to interrupt a pivot when it physically makes sense, ensuring that proper momentum and acceleration is consistent across all turning (deking, protecting the puck, etc.) which makes the puck carrier’s agility more realistic. We also worked a lot on facing angles and the control you have on defense to angle puck carriers, specifically looking at the angles and speeds you can take cross overs at before having to rotate your hips. You will also notice that you can step out and accelerate in a new direction like you can from a stop at speeds that makes it physically possible, rather than having to take a longer pivot out to convert your momentum like you do at high speeds.

Will new Goalie AI accompany the new animations?

Yes. In adding new blocking saves, the goalies save mechanics have been updated as well, so goalies will move their body into shots rather than making a limb based save which ultimately made them more vulnerable to be beat. They also know to stay tighter to their posts when the puck is down low and passes and shots are coming in tight to the net.

Can you talk about crease battles and cross crease goals from last year?

Yes. When we looked at one of the main issues for defenders it was the ability to tightly mark a player in front of the net or on the weak side. Last year, there was a big focus on getting defensive deflections and interceptions right but this year, we really wanted to focus on that close defending of a player. With net battles and extended stick lifts, you are given tools to tie up a player in front of the net so that you can take the goal side position and move them out from screening your goalie, tie up their stick, or simply just get in the way of them making a play.

Will there be a defensive skill stick?

No, there won't be a defensive skill stick for this year. Knowing that we needed a way to tightly mark a player in front, we focused on the addition of Net Battles and extended stick tie ups. Through discussions with the community, the GameChangers and internally, there were ideas on how a defensive skill stick could work but at this point there isn't a plan on how it wouldn't compromise other controls in one way or another. In theory, having more control is always better but we want to ensure if we go down that path, it is ultimately able to achieve that goal without taking control away elsewhere.

Will there be GM Connected in NHL 17?

GM Connected will not be in NHL 17.

I assume that if you can't use a created team in Franchise, it's because of AHL and ECHL affiliates. They may have some kind of system for changing affiliates in the game to more geographically-appropriate ones. (For example, moving the Arizona Coyotes to Hamilton could automatically move your AHL team from Tucson to, say, Kitchener.) That would have to be fixed to the relocation cities.

I would imagine that you can use them in Season Mode, much like how you can now by swapping in teams from other leagues.

I wonder if that's the case too.
If it is, you would think the easy solution is to simply keep the affiliates regardless of where the parent club relocates too.

At least they gave us 15 cities to choose from.
I'm going to laugh if Hamilton isn't one of them. If it's not, then you know it's because the NHL wanted to screw Ballsillie again.
You just know he's got NHL17 on pre-order and can't wait to move the 'Yotes, haha.

I believe in the trailer they released a couple weeks ago Hamilton was actually shown as one of the options.

You just know the NHL didn't want this sort of mode in (it took forever to get actual money salaries), but EA was like the NBA and NFL let it in their games and it's killing it with the customers.

If it has no incidental contact and five players hug I will pass on this game. Hope the skating feels fuild. I truly hope they have. Full stick on stick contact. It will take away a lot of goals but it will be more real.

Hey if you guys want some more information on the game, go to here.

This forum really doesn't have much information lately, which is disappointing. The EA forums have much more feedback/discussion.

I hope that is not the case on having to relocate after a year and mess with that. I just want to be able to replace teams with my created teams.

It needs to be like MyLeague in NBA 2K16 where you can upload images and then replace teams in the League. (One thing 2K16 needed was though to be able to create your team before starting your Franchise and being able to use your logo/jerseys/stadium instead of having to create all of that after you start and re-doing it if you want to start over.
- Also, they need to have it where you can edit draft classes.

I am trying to decide on if I want to get NHL or Madden this year and was leaning towards NHL, but that could get me to change my mind.

Not too sure about the whole relocation thing.
Obviously they wanted to add some form of reality to the process but is that what we really want?
I mean, let's say I want Florida out and Hartford in.
That'll mean I have to not only play with Florida for a while (how long?) but I also might end up with a screen like this.
I'm not even allowed to talk to the peeps in Hartford.
Well that's great...guess I'll just keep up with Florida for a few more years, that'll be fun, right?!

Of course it does. The haters on this board have effectively chased away anybody that likes the game and wants to talk about it. I suspect that most of us just enjoy the game quietly and rarely appear on the boards anymore.

It's a real shame. I love this series, but for more information such as developer interaction and GameChangers' feedback, the EA boards as immature as some of the responses are, is the place to go

If people leave because they like/dislike a game and can't discuss it like adults, that's on them.

To say that there's too much negativity around should be a reflection more so on EA's product than the posters.

As someone that's been around and talking about this game for a long time, it wasn't always this depressing. The online banter matches the game quite well. We're stuck constantly rehashing and debating the same old things, because EA constantly adds nothing of real value, while leaving glaring issues in the game.

I used to defend the franchise strongly, but even I've grown tired of the way EA has treated their product.
