Madden NFL 17 News Post

Check out the latest Madden NFL 17 blog going over the improvements on zone coverage with the addition of a new technology called "Behavior Coordinator". Read it and post your thoughts!

Quote:
Moving to a new AI architecture meant our underneath zone coverage logic had to be completely rewritten from scratch. We consulted with NFL coaches and players to get a thorough understanding of the various coverage concepts, rules for each player’s assignment, and techniques players use in order to carry out their assignments. This resulted in the creation of ten new zone coverage assignments that can be used to create a variety of coverage concepts (Cover 3 Match, Cover 2 Carry, etc.)

Each new zone coverage assignment has rules and logic in place with the idea that they’ll be used in specific coverages. So in essence, each player in a given coverage concept has knowledge of a global scheme and how everyone’s assignment fits into the scheme. Each player having a global knowledge of the scheme gives them the ability to make “Progression Reads” aka “Pattern Reading/Pattern Matching”. Before we get into the nuts and bolts of Progression Reads for the zone defenders, here’s a high level overview of the new zone coverage assignments.

As mentioned earlier, prior to Madden NFL 17, we had three underneath zone coverage assignments. That number has jumped to ten. In addition to the new zones, the on field Coach Cam art has been updated as well. Each underneath zone has the name in text inside the zone art. This is to give users a clear understanding as to which new zone assignment is being used in each play. The following is a list of the new zone assignments as well as a high level overview of what they are and where they’re used.

This would be great to tweet at a dev.

Paging JP, paging JP.

Same here. Franchise mode taking leaps forward instead of small improvements is the difference between waiting until this is on EA Access or buying on day one.

Number 1 - will they have this tuned (and players properly rated) so that you can tell/feel/see the difference between two players with similar OVR ratings and yet a disparity in their zone coverage ratings???

Will PRC finally impact the game in a more sophisticated way? Will having a choice between a fast young OLB and a savvy veteran who lost a step but has higher PRC and ZCV ratings finally be a decision that makes you consider playing the better technician???

These things could be implemented exactly as intended nd still be a disastrous disappointment for some of us SIM leaning peeps if proper weight is not attributed to certain aspects of said implementation...

...fingers crossed
Great post, I think you nailed it. Im hoping that everything in execution looks as good as it does on paper

Good stuff so far, though. It's huge that the vertical seams are finally going to be matched.
We have what you are looking for. There is a cover 3 mable and a cover 3 hard flat. But the real beast is cover 3 match.

I like cover 2 hard flat against the flat and drag routes. Cover 3 Match also does a great job of taking away over the middle crossing routes.

Thanks Rex.

Is it true that the implementation of using the new pattern matching zone coverages will take away some of the concerns of the requested coverage assignments?

Hey Rex, do we have any coverages that work best against a 3x1? Do coverages change responsibility depending if the offense is in and even set (2x2) or an odd set (3x1)? For example in college we played a Cover 7 against 3x1 sets. But we would audible to a straight Cover 5 (it's a cover 2 with soft squat corners) if the team was in an even set.

I enjoy me some football. I watch it when it's on and i'm a big Ravens fan. Plus i've been playing Madden since 92. However I have never played football competitively at any point in my life. Was too small so I stuck to baseball haha! I'm worried that with all the things being added and this football terminology being thrown around that I'll be lost know what I mean? Rex, could you tell me if these new concepts will be in the skills trainer this year? Thank you!

Rex and his team are killing it. Absolutely killing it this year.

Real football intelligence and strategy making it's way into the game. This is going to be a game changer for sure.

Got to say, from the running game improvements offense/defense, now these zone changes, special teams changes as well as all of the other things that have been mentioned so far, on paper, this sounds pretty damn incredible.

All I'm waiting for now is:
- CFM changes
- Word on whether Miami's stadium will reflect the renovations/roof being put on it.

Always been excited for Madden, but they way this is sounding exceeds all of that.

As a defensive guy, I'm extremely excited for this years madden. Seeing the use of receiver count brought tears to my eyes.

# 31 2_headedmonster @ 05/27/16 11:55 AM
ive been doing a lot of bootlegging on defense in Madden for years to get the coverage that i wanted, and the fact that authentic strategy is going to be expanded rather than some gimmick is breathe of fresh air.

This is seriously awesome, it went well beyond what was expected when pattern matching and new zones were initially announced.

Hopefully this will start a trend of people bragging about a 33% 3rd down conversion allowed percentage and limiting the number of successful drives, less bragging about qbs (unrealistically) putting up 5000 yd 50 td seasons.

EA or Rex himself will certainly have to confirm this, but if last year was the example, I HAVE to believe they will put tutorials for all of these new concepts. Which, I actually love. I grew up playing football in the street, never played college or even HS, but I've always just loved the game so much that I tend to know a lot about strategy (or thought I did. Lol), but all of these new concepts added to the game or slightly different (or more in depth, maybe) concepts will take me a min to adjust to. And, I love a quick tutorial explaining the what/when/why, and then a play or 2 showing it in action so u see how it works. I'm a tutorial geek/freak, actually. Lol. I want the game to show me the what/when/where/why at least once so I'm not guessing all the time. Sometimes, CPU logic can be slightly diff from HUM logic, so all of these things help. And, I love learning as much football strategy as I can. This can help when watching football as well, so I always do all the tutorials to see what's up or new in the game.

Will the CPU adapt to your tendencies and strengths / weaknesses when choosing how it defends the pass against the HUM player?

Thanks!

Run fits. Now Buzz Mable? Rex, they should name elementary schools in your honor.

That buzz mable is a popular call vs. 3x1 sets.

Most definitely. I remember when NCAA 12 launched it had the best zone coverage I've seen in a game and people really struggled.

After 25 years we can finally stop 4 verts and TE corners.

This was a very nice read.

I'm with Senator Palmer in that I've wanted to move to a Quinn 1/3 base scheme since Norton Jr. joined the Raiders from Seattle, but it didn't seem quite viable in M16. Now I think it will be, which is great.

I'm also happy for the folks like NYKia, who have been bootlegging the Tampa 2 for a long time. It looks like those folks will be able to actually use this as a base defense now, online and off.

I'm not normally the type to feel good about things that aren't here this year but might be there next year, but these improvements have me thinking that a similar attempt at enhancing our ability to run realistic man schemes, with multiple techniques and assignments might be coming sooner rather than later. It would seem a natural extension of the foundation that's been laid this year w/r/t run fits and zone coverages.

I'm excited to have to study my playbook and learn more about real NFL strategy to succeed in M17.

I'm sure the online casuals will go apoplectic at not having their favorite instant reads always open anymore.

2 trap, rip/liz cover 3, 3 mable for trips, finally getting the curl-flat drop correct in quarters(he is responsible for #2 shallow), having a seam-flat for 3 deep/3 under FZ blitzes, vertical hook zones(they match #2 vertical, and cut #1 on in-breaking routes), and stock blitzes finally working, all makes me very happy. That being said, I still want to see quarters coverage, and see if the cb's and safeties match the vertical stem of #1, #2. & #3 at 10-12 yards, and see if it plays 3×1 sets properly, before I can make a call on it. *For those that may not know, quarters coverage is cover 4.*

My sincere hope is that after about a month of the casual gamer complaining about the game being too hard, that the devs wont create a patch that ruins it. If its sim keep it sim and make the others conform.
