NBA 2K16 News Post

NBA 2K16 is one of the best sports video games to have come out in the last decade.

It is not easy to hand out claims of greatness when a game has only been out a few months. College Hoops 2K8 wasn't given legendary status until people were still playing it years after its release. NBA 2K16 won't have the "benefit" of being the last game in the series, so there's no real reason to keep playing it long after its release, but it's sure to be the title that all future sports games can be measured by.

Disagree. Including Nfl 2k5 but a quality game.

There is absolutely no doubt it is a great, great game. IMO clearly the best basketball game ever made. The depth really is incredible.

I have a franchise going on that is a hell of a lot of fun and I look forward to playing whenever I am not able to. Games are all different...tendencies are amazingly well done...ACE is great...the AI is excellent. Not perfect, but no game is.

Going forward...I would love to see them improve the physics. They made a massive leap this year with the balls interaction with the backboard and rim.

But there is still way too much morphing between players.

I would also like to see them improve the crowd sounds further. It is better than 15, but hearing the same lady yell 'come on guys' 10 times a game in every arena is dull.

Sample some real arena sounds and focus on making each one a really different expeince to play in.

Great game overall though. The level of depth should be the standard all sports games aim for from here on.

The things that frustrate me in 2k16 were done so much better in 2k15.
IMO, responsiveness, smart Ai defense, better positioning for rebounds, and on ball defense were done much better in 2k15. in addition fouls were better represented in 2k15. I have yet to play a game in 2k16 were my time has yet to reach a bonus situation. fouls do not matter in 2k16, and fouls, adn player management is a key part of basketball.
2k16 looks better, and I do like the game, but Im back to playing 2k15 because of these littel nuances that are missing in 2k16.
the stats lines werer better in 2k15 also. and that is because teams had better pacing
Ill have to give 2k16 soem more time post patch. before I give it the title of GOAT
Agreed, when reading these boards i sometimes feel like i'm playing a different game. I'm on ps4 btw. It's just the responsiveness like you said and the fluidity that's lacking this year. Just moving around and a plethora of offensive moves in general feel completely unnatural when compared to previous games. Everything feels sluggish, to me anyway. I kinda regret having traded in 2k15 but then again i do enjoy pro am so that's the main saving grace to me.

As far as this being called the greatest basketball/sports game, not for me obviously. My top 3 still stands at 13, 11 and 15. It still has a chance at third if there'll be another patch making it more fluid. After all, i very much disliked 2k15 until one of those patches completely changed the experience as far as movement and because of that it ended up as one of my favorites.

I've got high hopes for 2k17 though, to me it feels like even years are kind of transitional years in this series and then uneven years are the finished product imo. As you can tell by my top 3 - 13/11/15.

I understand bugs and things like that....but you would classify MyGM & MyLeague as 'overlooked'? Wow.

Agreed Great write up!

2k14 was the best, IMHO, on next gen. Thinking about picking it back up again.

Not so much the modes itself, as there was definitely some work done to them this year, more so just some of the same bugs year after year that seem to get overlooked in those modes.

The trend in gaming is towards always online and away from total customisation.

Im thankful I can play a Myleague, which is essentially a sandbox and control everything how I want it.

the game is decent at best i wouldn't call it the best sport game.i only play my career so that might be why i think so.they take away so many customization for my player each year even colours on sleeves they have removed.atleast my career mode is getting worse by the year.the story this year was so terrible

One thing that I think somehow (and rather remarkably) goes almost under-appreciated/under-discussed is how ridiculously good the presentation is in this series. There isn't anything on the sports gaming market (now or ever, including NFL 2K5) that comes even close. The pre-game show, half-time show, post-game show, the studio "interviews" after the second quarter, the advertisements for upcoming games, the graphical overlays for holiday events, the commentary, all of the in-stadium stuff like the cheerleaders and mascots and the crowds... I could go on and on.

I took the last couple of years off from the series and have played only Madden and The Show religiously during that time. Don't get me wrong, I love both series (Madden 16 has been a huge step forward), and The Show's gameplay is always top notch. But playing this title? Wow. Jaw-dropingly wow. These other sports titles need to step up their game. Big time. It's almost embarrassing how poorly they perform in this department in comparison.

I'm so, so glad I decided to make the purchase this year.

BTW, the ability to play six minute quarters but have the stats sim as if I played a full-length game? Um... amazing! Talk about another feature other titles should adopt immediately. Huge for the little amount of time I have to play videogames in a given week.

Honestly this game for me is perfect. Anything added in NBA 2k17 will just be icing on the cake for me.

The only big things for me for next year is:

1. Those darn Generated Rookie Classes need to be overhauled. The way the game generates the rookie's looks, measurements, skills, tendencies, and sig styles are just poor.

2. CPU Trades and CPU roster building. It's still far too easy to game the CPU in MyGM/MyLeague.

Everything else is top quality.

p.s. the NBA Live series should crawl into a hole and mercy kill itself. It will take them half a decade to even attempt to catch up to 2K

There aren't many in my book. That's a tremendous compliment to the team. Whenever I get me some gaming time 2K is first on the docket. Great job, fellas!!

That said, 2K16 is the deepest sports game ever made. If they can clean up their legacy flaws next year then look out!
After the last patch and with slider adjustments the game is so tantalizingly close that it causes a little pain in my heart when defenders for both teams just wander into the paint leaving a wide open corner 3, or bigs in the paint won't body up their man until he's shooting and then the hammer him to the ground on a bail out foul, et, al. So close, but now for me it is more fun than frustrating, when the opposite was true before.

Also, the one where CPU controlled bigs in the paint would just wonder out of bounds leaving a wide open lane for their man to score. I turned both "contest shot" and defensive awareness up to 70 and so far it seems to have alleviated these problems.

I haven't been seeing this one as much after the patch, but I'll sure this will tighten things up even more.

I HAVE to ask this question... i HAD 2k16 and sold it. Has ANYONE "played" this game offline? Reason I ask is because I have no high speed Internet in my area and I had to sell the game because the game is almost unplayable offline. The ONLY mode you can play offline is play now. Everything else is blacked out or says limited. The game doesn't save your my player creation that you make in the beginning of the game and forces you to remake him everytime you boot up the game... it doesn't save your sliders... it doesn't save your career or dynasty/franchise. I tried to enjoy it for what it was but I wasn't ALLOWED to. I let all that slide until it didn't even let me save something you've been able to save in every past game (season)! That was a deal breaker. The game is not perfect as some say. There is extreme buyer beware with this game and I bought it not knowing this because NO ONE mentions these flaws! No one said that online is pretty much required. Without online the game is just a demo and only about %25 of a game.

Yes! The things that stands out are style things. The interviews after the first quarter, inside the nba crew, photo bombing etc... but there are too many technical flaws... the presentation in 2k is NUTS though! I give them that!

I'm strictly an offline gamer and I have been having a ball this year. MyLeague works fine for me, even then the 2K servers are down. If you don't have any high speed internet then you can just enjoy the game for what it is out of the box which is awesome. Some people might actually prefer it that way, again. I have been playing MyCareer (just for the college basketball part) and I have online and offline saves with the different schools because I started a few of them when the servers were down. I didn't have to recreate anything. Just pick up where I left off...
