WWE 2K16 News Post

Developers of wrestling games may have one of the hardest jobs around as they must try to emulate a scripted/staged event by introducing elements to make it feel like a real event.

In short, that type of juggling has rarely resulted in video games greatness.

The folks at 2K are back (in conjunction with Yukes) to give wrestling another go this year. Last year, I called the game above average -- with promising additions in terms of modes and gameplay features. Everything wasn’t quite working right, but there was hope for the future.

Strangely enough, this year I feel less hope and more disdain for the title. There has been work done, but I’m not sure any of it has made the game truly better -- just different.

I'll start feeling bad for developers when games stop costing $60 a pop. I'm sure they're doing fine, lol.

I think you might care a little too much about the specific number. Look at the explanation of OS' ratings and you'll see a 6.5 is an above average game. It's only a negative rating if you're going by the "anything below an 8 sucks" scale that most major sites are using.

$60 is a reasonable price for something that gives hours of entertainment. Compare it to a $12 movie ticket, and it's no comparison. But it's a moot point really. Some people find it a value, some people are cheap

"I feel bad" was probably a bad choice of words on the internet, but it must be annoying to see people with absolutely no clue trash your hard work because of one small omission or bug that is wholly inconsequential to the overall game.

Yes, the game is incomplete. You must not have the game or you ave not played the mode at all yet.

It's not just titles.

Rivalries is screwed up.

No cut scenes in Universe at all unless it's a rivalry.

No manual number 1 contender match.

No manual MITB customization. Same with Royal Rumble. If you customize participants it doesn't register. They just make it a regular match.

The mode is broken. The point of Universe is to book matches how you want/when you want/with who you want. Some of the biggest matches (title matches, the Royal Rumble, MITB, and Rivalries) are all screwed up and 2k has only responded to the title match part so far... that's it.
I got the game day one. I'm loving it and very happy with my purchase.

Poor you for not finding any enjoyment out of a great game

This game is excellent in my opinion. 9 out of 10. As for the universe mode, its not broken, it just has its own set of rules that need to change maybe in a patch or the next time the game is released. Its WWE universe, so ur confined within WWE rules. lol

Also I had my crowd screaming "suplex city" and "this is awesome" going wild when me and a friend did a Brock Lensar vs Undertaker last mane standing.....

So I've been playing the game a lot this weekend, and while I haven't tried enough of the game to give a full review, here were things that stood out to me:

Pros:

- The match pace feels great this year. I loved all the transitions, like when the guys are tired and they crawl to the ropes, etc. It just feels a bit less chaotic than in years past. I love how guys will stay down for awhile when they're really hurt as well.

- The roster is incredible. Rick Rude's intro FTW!

- The mini-games are fun so far. I never played 2k15, so thus far I'm enjoying the slow build up into each match. This may be something I loathe in 2 weeks but cool for now.

-2k showcase. I love the Stone Cold story and the cinematic intros. While it does eventually get tiring playing so many straight 1 v 1 matches with the same character, at least it's Stone Cold.

- Less glitchy moments. Yes, there are still glitches, but I've found a huge improvement in certain notoriously glitchy situations, like running strikes and throwing guys into the steps and other things at ringside. It just looks more fluid and you feel some sort of impact on virtually every attack. I also love how guys will drag the opponent towards the center of the ring before performing certain moves.

Cons:

- The creation suite seems like a step back. Maybe I need more time with this, but I tried downloading a few CAWs, and it seems they only have 1 attire? I saw where you can tweak Superstars by copying them and then choosing to make the copy an alternate attire, but it all seems really clunky to me. I HATE the hashtag searching as well.

- CAW entrances are awful. Where are all the generic entrances, or those from older superstars? Seems like basically you can only use entrance material from superstars who are in the game already. Am I wrong about this? Please tell me I am. Also, you can't import theme songs??? This could be a legitimate deal breaker for me. Is this just a PS4 issue?

- Charged Finishers. Maybe this is petty, but I much preferred the feel of the wake up taunts. You had more options that way and more of an opportunity for a reversal it seemed to me.

Anyway, I'm sure I've got lots yet to experience, but so far my take is that this is a potentially great game, held back by some inexplicable regressions in key areas.

Just to respond to concerns about the score, I think people have forgotten again what the OS scale is meant to do. We are basically locked into a 1-10 point scale for a couple of outside reasons, so we made the conscious decision to actually use the entire 1-10 points in the scale to rate games. That means that a 6.5 on OS doesn't mean its a 'D' as many people are assuming.

In reality, it's the equivalent to a 3.5 star out of 5 star review or a 2.5 out of 4, or in letter grades...probabably a C+ to B-. I never once said the game was bad, and I don't feel that way. But in many ways I do think the game is too shallow to be good and too buggy to be good as well. If many of these same types of bugs were in a Madden or NBA 2K, the community would be in an uproar. I'm probably too tough on many games, but I hold them all to a pretty high standard and apply the scale fairly.

Regardless, its just my opinion on the game. The scale even says fans of the sport will enjoy the games in the above average range -- and that certainly seems to be the case. I too am enjoying MyCareer and would enjoy Universe immensely if there weren't so many artificial limitations (I did knock the score for Universe mode being generally poorly executed).

So yeah there's that.

When you consider that games cost millions of dollars and 2-5 years to make (depending on the game), and that the price of AAA games hasn't gone up since 2005 here in the US, we're pretty fortunate games still only cost $60...

Agreed. The review is a joke. I don't care what "scale" is being used. This is one of the best WWE games in a long time.

Metacritic score is down to 79 on PS4. The user score is 7.6. XB1 score is worse. Not quite the universally praised game it looked to be a little while back.

I'm trying to figure out your angle here. Is it that those who are enjoying the game shouldn't be?

No, it just bugs me when people bash a review/opinion of a game just because it doesn't seemingly fall in line with the supposed majority opinion.
