NHL 16 News Post

Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks is currently under police investigation for alleged events that involve him and a woman in her 20s. This obviously put EA in a tough spot, and a spokesperson from the company responded today with an official statement cutting all ties with Kane:

Quote:
"In light of the ongoing investigation involving Patrick Kane, he will no longer be a spokesperson for the launch of EA Sports NHL 16.

He will not appear on the EA Sports NHL 16 cover nor participate in other EA Sports NHL 16 promotional activities."

It will be interesting if EA replaces Kane with another star or just goes with Jonathan Toews as the lone cover athlete.

UPDATE: The NHL 16 pre-order page has new cover art, featuring Jonathan Toews.

UPDATE #2: Another view of the new NHL 16 cover.

It was only a matter of time. EA had to do something.

Judging by EA's twitter banner look's like Toews will go it alone. https://twitter.com/EASPORTSNHL

I would much rather developers stopped spending money on cover stars & invested more in the quality of the game. A game cover means nothing. Would you decide or not decide to buy a game based on a cover star? Surely not.

Cover looks much improved. Not as posed looking.

I dont think investing in a cover athlete is taking anything away from developing the game. You are making it seem like if they just released a game with no cover it would do better because they "invested" more time into the actual game.

I think it's a good move by EA, Kane is a little douche.

How is this the right move if he's innocent? Have you read anything about the situation? It's a money-grabbing whore.

Here's the situation. Patrick Kane was out in a bar one night having fun and enjoying himself. At bar close (4am), he went back to his place with two girls. When they arrived, one of the girls went back with Patrick to his room leaving her friend on the couch. The girl finally came out of the bedroom around 9-10am and got her friend and they left. She then went down to the police station to file a rape claim. Upon the initial investigation, she had a "small scratch" on her leg.

I agree that the cover does look much better. I'm still surprised they had time to pull it off, but I guess the ship date is just far enough out.

The two have nothing to do with each other though. EA isn't going to hold back money in the other parts of the game because of their cover athlete nor does it somehow take away time from developers because of it.

You do realize this is a criminal suit and not a civil suit?

Plus, he's already guilty in the court of public opinion.
Patrick Kane hasn't been arrested. No charges have been filed. Since when is it "guilty until proven innocence"?

Okay so you were in the room as well and know what happened? He's innocent for now, but that does not mean the other human being involved is therefore guilty for now of being a "money-grabbing whore." That's a seriously shameful statement and way to look at this.

From a PR standpoint, the choice is incredibly simple. This isn't about if he's guilty or innocent, its about what the worst case scenario is both ways. The downside to removing him is very small at this point, the downside to keeping him is incredibly bad.

Besides the fact that what will likely happen is charges will be dropped and they will settle civilly out of court

I didn't realize you spent the entire night with Kane and this woman and could provide such an in-depth account. You should probably ring up the Buffalo PD and offer your testimony.

Patrick Kane is innocent until proven guilty. He's also allegedly accused of a pretty heinous crime. EA is right to take him off the cover and your victim-blaming is the reason so many women who have been sexually assaulted never come forward.

What do you personally think is more probable? That Kane indeed raped her, or her having full well known who he is in a bar seeing an opportunity.

That's an assumption. No one has sued anyone for damages. I find it ironic that people will immediately come to the defense of pro athletes while making blanket statements about their accusers. Really, I expect more from OSers.

The fact is no one knows the truth about the situation except the individuals involved. I'd rather let the facts be known before resorting to name-calling.

What I am saying is that "innocent until proven guilty" is a terrible thing to say every time a celebrity is accused of rape because what you're really saying is "I trust a broken justice system more than I trust you."
