FIFA 16 News Post

Owing to the success of the US Women's National Team, and the Women's World Cup, EA Sports today announced Alex Morgan, Christine Sinclair, and Steph Catley will all be appearing on separate covers of FIFA 16 when it releases this fall.

Believe it or not, all three women will be the first to ever be featured on a FIFA cover. Morgan will appear on the US covers of the game, Sinclair on the Canadian covers, and Catley on Australian covers.

“It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover of EA SPORTS FIFA,” said Morgan. “I know people all over the world play this game and I’m really excited that FIFA 16 is putting such an important spotlight on women’s soccer. And now to share the cover with today’s greatest player is surreal.”

“This year’s World Cup showcased the unbelievable talent and skill in women’s soccer,” said Sinclair. “I’m thrilled that EA SPORTS is celebrating female athletes in FIFA 16. To be featured in the game and to promote women’s soccer with Alex is really special and another exciting step for women in sports.”

“As soon as we knew Women’s National Teams were joining FIFA 16, we immediately recognized that Christine and Alex would be the perfect cover athletes based on their accomplishments and what they represent for their respective countries and the sport of women’s soccer," said David Pekush, Sr. Manager of North America Marketing for EA SPORTS. "They are exhilarating players and exude heart and courage on the pitch, and we are extremely proud to be working with them this year.”

My reaction to this is... blah.

I like it. But it should have been Carli Lloyd. You now, the golden ball winner.

Should've been Carli Lloyd.

Like the detail of the updated crest on Morgan's shirt. Odd arrangement of the stars though.

This cover makes me want the game less. Just looks odd.

The star goes on top when the team is the reigning champion. So they'll have that star formation until the end of the next World Cup, then assuming they don't win, it'll just be three stars in a row.

Ah yes. That sure makes sense.

Of course it's Morgan. The "hot" one, lol. Repinoe is the best and most charismatic player on that squad, but whatever. Also, it's an easy sell from a marketing and social standpoint, but maybe they should have added more game modes and teams for women's soccer before putting them on the cover.

If you really care that much about the cover, then buy it digitally and you'll only have Messi on the thumbnail.

Alex Morgan's head looks photoshopped on to another picture of her body.

Looks incredibly awkward......

Would have liked it to be Lloyd or Rapinoe, but yeah, you knew they'd go with Morgan for marketing "reasons."

I feel like them added the women in this year's installment is such as wasted and almost half done. It comes after the World Cup and not even all the women's national teams that were in the tournament are represented.

I Wanted Alex Morgan on the PS4 version.

Oh Yeah... Carli or Rapinoe would of been a better choice.

Nothing against the women, but why so much hype EA Sports about a half done mode that quite frankly should have been add on content to FIFA 15 like the men were in FIFA 14. If EA Sports really wanted to show respect to the women's game, they should have added every Women's World Cup team and had a true world cup tournament mode instead of this exhibition mode that many gamers literary may play once if at all. Can you even use the women's teams h2h against each other online?

They should've used AM's SI shoot photos for the cover

So is it ok to ask why EA did not put a lesbian athlete on the cover instead of the one who is universally considered to the be the "hot" one? Not that Morgan isn't a fine representative and an excellent athlete, but we did not get Solo who's been arrested or Wambach or Rapinoe.

I think you're way overcomplicating it. Alex Morgan was far and away the best business decision. She's the most popular and recognizable female soccer player right now. She's young, relatable, and a role model for a lot of young girls, who are the target market for the addition of women's teams to the game. Solo has a lot of legal issues, Wambach is 35 and may not even play in the Olympics, Rapinoe is 30 and has never been the "face" of the team and isn't nearly as recognizable. Carli Lloyd was the best choice, but she doesn't have the recognition that Morgan does if you're looking beyond this one World Cup, and in reality, her one amazing game in the final.

Believe it or not, none of us are the target for this, and that's why so many of us have a hard time understanding it. EA wants to open themselves to a currently untapped market, and I think they're doing it brilliantly. Could they have added a more robust mode? Sure, but what 12 year old girl is going to think that? They're going to be thrilled that these teams were included in the first place.

No, that's not a discussion for this website.
