NHL 16 News Post

The NHL 16 team continues to answer questions about the game at their Ask EA page. The Q&A is copied and pasted below for easier reading. Other Q&A sessions have been posted here in the same fashion.

What will playing games in EASHL get you since there is no more player growth?

While there is no player growth in EASHL players will still accumulate individual and team stats in Online Seasons games. This includes any Seasons titles and trophies. We are always looking for feedback on the type of player stats or progression system the community would like to see in the future.

Can you have customize jerseys in EASHL?

For EASHL in NHL 16, you will be able to select from any of the preset jerseys that are available within the game. Currently we do not have the feature to create your own custom jersey. Listening to the community, the most important part for customization was the individual player first so we started there focusing on additions that would also allow us to make our star players more authentic as well. We are definitely continuing to listen to what else people want to customize most and will continue to look at those options moving forward.

Since there is no player progression in EASHL, will there be any boosts that you can apply to your online pro?

Hi Shane, thanks for your question. In NHL 16, there is no way to boost ratings for your pro character. Everyone is on an even playing field.

Will the new AHL teams be in NHL 16?

All the moves and affiliation changes in the AHL will be in NHL 16.

Will we see the cannon for the Blue Jackets?

The cannon for the Columbus Blue Jackets is in the game and ready to go off when the Blue Jackets score.

Will there be updates with new sticks and equipment during the year as new stuff comes out?

We always work with the equipment manufacturers and NHL 16 already has a lot of new equipment for the upcoming season. We will continue working with the equipment makers to bring you the latest and greatest equipment if and when available.

Will you get alerts in GM Mode when a player is injured or will the game just automatically fix the lines?

If you would like to get alerts to when a player is injured on your team go to your settings and turn off the Assistant GM. You will then get alerts when a player is injured and be asked what your next move is for fixing the lines.

Will the fan attendance change each game? Like in nhl 15, it was a sellout every game no matter who was playing. Say the worse your team is performing, the more there are empty seats in the stands. And the better your team is playing, the more fans there are. If this is true, will this happen in all game modes?

In NHL 16 we have dynamic attendance based on how you play in a particular game. Expect to see fans leave early if they feel you are way out of a game. During a season however, they give you the benefit of the doubt and show up to see if you can turn that losing streak around in person.

Will you be fixing the AI 's hitting from behind? Seems the AI hit a lot from behind in NHL 15

If you are near the boards, the AI will try to pin you more than they will try to hit you. We also added conditions for when they choose to poke check vs stick lift. From behind, they will be more likely to look for stick lift opportunities when on the strong side of the puck. AI players will definitely nudge you from behind to try and move you off the puck but we have also added in stumbles where players will be able to shrug off hits that aren't strong enough when they try to hit from behind at low relative speeds. A big enough player will be able to knock a smaller player right off the puck in these situations though.

Will create a player goalies have fully customizable equipment from the original creation screen? I saw another post where once you start a season or gm mode they are not. But I'm more curious about the initial creation.

Yes, when you create a goalie in NHL 16 you will be able to select from any of the equipment in game and have the ability to recolor it as well.

Hello EA. I'm wondering if steps have been taken to make the cycling game a more viable strategy with AI teammates. In previous iterations of the game, cycling has been incredibly hard to execute unless you only play with other players.

It depends what strategy you set your team to play. A big part of cycling the puck is putting the puck where the player currently isn't so that you can keep momentum going. I suggest using the manual saucer pass into/along the boards, I find that my AI teammates will skate onto the puck in those circumstances in the corners. That being said, we have done a lot of work on facing direction of your teammates and ensuring that your player turns into the direction you expect. We’ve also added stumbles into the equation for hitting/physics which allows players to bump off checks at low relative speeds. All of these things combined really help the cycle game overall.

Can we change colors on goalie pads?

Yes you can.

Will all players in NHL 16 have a variety in stick tapes? Ovechkin was the only one who had a different tape pattern in the trailer.

Yes! We’ve worked hard to ensure NHL players look as authentic as possible including how their sticks are taped. There'll be a lot of variety when it comes to stick tape including multiple styles, unlimited coloring, shaft tape styles and also different knob styles.

Will female players be limited to the two or three generic heads in NHL 16 or will there be at least some level of customization? Even just the ability to change hair and skin color (as we were able to do with custom heads for male players in previous iterations of the game) would be welcome.

Female customization will once again be limited but we're looking at ways to have a greater female presence in our games off the heals of FIFA's big announcement this year.

Besides from that, the cycling question interested me the most. I hope everything answered there is true, which would IMPROVE (not PERFECT) the cycling game. I'm not sure we'll see an excellent representation until there is the ability to chip pucks along without having to control them first.

Pretty good Q/A's this time. Here's hoping for more soon.

I know what they're trying to do with EASHL and I'm all for the principle of it, but I still think there should be a little room for player individuality amongst the builds. Level playing field is one thing, but my fear is they're going to rob the mode of some character that way.

Does anyone know if you adjust your, let's say sniper's height and weight, will that affect their speed, quickness, etc at least? I wonder how much leeway there is to even adjust your player build's height and weight.

i hope that we can have more than two lines on the penalty kill, seems like a simple fix

I'm interested to see what the options are. I'm guessing stick tape styles, which i've seen in the videos. I've seen earguards on the helmet, didn't a video show skate guards too?
I hope they added some visors. It's so annoying that you only get 2 visors in every previous version.
The videos haven't shown custom sock tape,

I'm all about EASHL letting you individualize your player, but i hope they do it tastefully. I don't want a return of NHL09 clown gear

Some good info there on cycling. I hope it works. This would greatly improve the power play dynamic in the game, which is greatly needed. Now, if only we can get more penalties so we can have more power play opportunities.

As for fan attendance, if they have the ability to make the fans leave, I really wish they could have lower attendances in BaGM mode if your team is playing poorly. That would greatly improve the atmosphere and it would make places like the Bell Centre more special.

Dynamic attendance a welcome addition, but I wonder, will they walk up and down the aisles while going away (a la "The show") or simply disappear like magic?

# 7 blinkfan77 @ 07/16/15 07:49 PM
So there won't be stat tracking in drop-in games? There used to be right?

Listening to the community.... Lol ... STOP!!!

# 9 Caniac94 @ 07/16/15 10:51 PM
Dynamic attendance is intriguing. That would really help add to a more realistic feel. It would also make you want to push harder for success in GM Mode. NHL 07(?) I think had this, where if you did poorly your attendance dropped or went up depending on performance. Also that affected the money your organization was making. It was really neat in GM Mode. Wish they'd bring that back.

This is the kind of stuff that I'm sure makes the devs WANT to ignore *this* "community". It's 80% venom around here these days, and folks whinging about wanting five man hug celebrations, and slamming almost every answer to come out of the Q+A, or qualifying it with a "i'll only believe it when I see it."

And did you ever think OS is such a small drop of the "community" bucket, that maybe other folks HAVE asked for some of these things?

Like someone else posted in one of the other threads, if folks want to make an impact, vote with your wallets. Or give them feedback minus the sarcasm and snark. Who knows, maybe someone would listen to you then.......

As for the dynamic attendance thing, if i recall correctly a few years ago, one of the devs mentioned that the agreement with the NHL licensing wouldn't allow them to have dynamic attendance. Same as blood on the ice, etc.

I feel like they recycle the same questions for 50% of their Q&A's. How many EASHL and arena feature question's can they answer.

I wouldn't call it whining, I would say it's pretty reasonable task for EA to put 5 man celebrations in NHL 16, since they had it in NHL 04. And EA lost the benifit of the doubt when they released a half___ game last fall, and didn't disclose any of the shortcomings to the community, that's why you see the "i'll believe it when I see it"

I think 80% venom is a bit high. Everyone's not praising every little nugget of info, but I think people for the most part have been more than fair in waiting to see what news comes out.

So we can only use actual uniforms that exist with the real team colors, no editing anything, for EASHL?

# 15 bigwill33 @ 07/17/15 01:51 AM
Someone needs to ask them if the EA Access will give us 6 or 10 hours of early game play this year. Other games have been 10, but last year was only 6.

For this to be a proper online multiplayer with E-sport potential when it comes to EASHL there needs to be some simple modifications:

First of all, there needs to be way more different ways of playing EASHL, it needs to be divided for casual, hardcore etc. Casual can be like it is today, AI players filling up emtpy positions, 2+2 and 5 min penalties, 5 min periods, fights, cut scenes and all that so just leave the current EASHL and call it casual gameplay.

For the "pro league" i would like to see the following.

Being a hardcore player myself this post is mostly about what a serious and competerative hardcore mode would work.

Im pro "no player progression". This is a good way of getting new players into the game and one doesnt need to worry about players finding attribute glitches for example, Therefor, all players should be the same, no special stuff at all, no special players, no height or weight difference etc, just skill and the possibility to adjust the look, name and if you are R/L.

First of all i think the game clock should´t run from 00:00-20:00. Instead i think it would be better if it ran from 00:00-05:00. The problem with the current system is that matches can go on for way to long, it can take anywhere from like 20 to 60 min. With a real time game clock all games would be around 20 min. Personally i would like to see shorter periods as well, 5 x 3 min is a little bit to long, 4 x 3 or like 3,30 x 3 would be better, you wouldnt really feel any difference but there would still be a pretty big difference. This would also make the league more competerative when ****tier teams would have way better chances.

The time a player is in the box would need to be adjusted as well, lets say we play 4 x 3 the penalties can be 1:30 or something. Remove 2+2 and 5 min penalties.

There should be a few different options, all with different ranking systems when you are searching for a game.

Goalie cannot be AI-controlled.
3 vs 3
4 vs 4
5 vs 5

If any player looses connection they have to be able to reconnect, another team member should also be able to join a game. If no player joins the game the other team is forced to play with one man less regardless, NO AI PLAYERS AT ALL. if the goalie rage-quits or whatever someone is forced to take his place. Changing posistions mid game should be possible.

Remove all cut scenes, replays etc. The only thing there should be replays of are goals. The rest can be watched after the game, nobody watches this **** after a few games anyway.

A GM should be able to create tournaments and invite other clubs, set number of game, number of playoff games, number of teams to advance etc. Just like you can do in most sportsgames offline but with more settings obviously so if you are group of friends playing a friday you can simply join a short tournament with like 8 teams in 2 groups with the top 2 from each group playing semi finals in best of 3 or whatever your settings are during the course of an evening, everything with complete stats just like an offline torunament. This would kick ***, much better than just playing random teams.

Some gameplay changes needs to be made, we need the hardcore mode to be way more difficult, way harder to pass, make a one timers etc and some stuff needs to be way easier to do, clear the puck without shooting it up the stands for example, that should be more or less impossible. The shooting should therefor simply be very sensitive.

You should be able to "play" as a referee and this doesnt need to be advanced at all,
- Call 2 min penalty for team X player Y
- Call penalty shot
- Call goal review, goal allowed / disallowed

Faceoffs are known to be laggy etc, this should be totally random, select the player you want to aim for and lets throw the dice.

So in short, very hardcore and hard to play, skills only, no AI-players ever, just gameplay.

I remember them saying this about dynamic attendance. I'd like to see what that deal says though. Because it seems now that it says something like "You can have fans ditch their team and walk out early. It's okay if the stadium is empty at the end of the game. But at the beginning of the game that stadium better be full!!"

It doesn't really make sense to me.

Well I would guess for every positive post I see on something ,I see two negative ones. A lot from the same people over and over so maybe it doesn't seem that bad...... But post wise, it seems to trend negative to me.

I think it adds to the game having not many people show up if your team sucks .I really don't know why NFL, NHL maybe NBA has restrictions on what you can and can't do.At the end of the day it's only a video game , years ago it never mattered why the change now?
