NBA Live 16 News Post

EA has posted a new blog detailing four key gameplay upgrades to NBA Live 16. The article talks a lot about animations, in fact NBA Live 16 will feature over 8,000 new ones.

Smoother Dribbling

Fans will notice many small changes to gameplay in NBA LIVE 16 that improve ball handling – including dribble handoffs. “It’s a huge part of the NBA and it’s a new mechanic that’s going to open up so many different opportunities on the court,” says producer Connor Dougan.

There are also new driving animations with a smoother and more responsive dribble system in NBA LIVE 16. “We’ve been building tech for over two years now that serves as the foundation for what we will deliver in NBA LIVE 16,” says executive producer Sean O’Brien.

Sharper Passing

That technology allows for better ball movement, which is vital for success on the court. Swing the ball around the perimeter and find the open man for a corner-three with Touch Passing. “You’ll have the ability to square up on the catch for a catch-and-shot with no delay, and smooth animation,” says Dougan.

Animations have also been polished across the board. “We’ve run more mo-cap shoots this year than any other basketball game I’ve ever worked on,” says senior designer Ryan Santos.

However it’s not just more mo-cap that matters, but the type of mo-cap. “We’re playing a lot of 5-on-5 and just letting the talent play hoops. We then grab the motion we need from that to get a much more natural look.”

Off-Ball Movement and Live Motion

The focus on improving animations in NBA LIVE 16 went well beyond sharper passing.

“We’ve added thousands of new animations with LIVE Motion,” says Dougan. In total, there are over 8,000 new animations in NBA LIVE 16, which add up to make off-ball movement more realistic.

“Players are physical and aware of each other,” adds Dougan. “You can bump cutters, swim around players and deny the ball. There’s a lot more physicality.”

Building with Community Feedback

“This team listens to player feedback religiously,” says O’Brien. “We pride ourselves on it.”

Everything starts with what fans tell the team about their game, and the group at Tiburon is focused on delivering the most realistic basketball experience to those who love NBA LIVE.

“This game isn’t being built for us,” says O’Brien. “It’s being built for our fans.”

I love that they are adding animations too the game which has been requested for years now...

But human anatomy and joints are still an issue, I mean even in that screenshot in the first post, look at his arm going for that block...seriously the arm is jacked up...Elbow, Shoulder blades, etc...something is wrong with the body models arm and leg movement and bending.

8000 newly added animations sounds good and all, but how many old robotic/jerky/stiff/unnatural animations have they removed and replaced? I still see quite a bit of them in the gameplay vids that have been released so far.

Nice...I look forward to the final build! Still wish EA would bring their sports series to the PC though....

It appears they would rather you stream your console game to PC rather than build specifically for PC play. I hope windows 10 and the upcoming mod community enhancements for consoles and cross platform, will change the rules of the console game for us all.

As for the 8000 new animations, I hope they didn't sacrifice basic player controls just to " be like Mike" through prettier animations. I do feel their control scheme is heading in the right direction with the current releases.

I just hope they remove all animations that weren't mo-capped. Those stick out like a sore thumb and ruin certain moments

One of my issues with Live through the years, has been that every year the game is supposed to include thousands of new animations (I believe them when they're saying it's there), but many of these animations would never play. You end up seeing the same animations again and again, then once in 10 games you see a couple of new animations - which wouldn't play for another 20 games.

So it's not only about the quantity of the animations, but actually being played. I'm sure some of the older Lives had TON of animations on the disc - that never played throughout the game.
I agree. What they should do is use multiple animations for single scenarios and then pick one at random to give some variability to the visuals.

I'll just wait and see because everyone at EA every year talks a big game but the end product is never as exciting and they make it out to be .

Get rid of the turbo button all together.

That's definitely not a good idea. lol Some people have heavy thumbs and it would be hard to tell if you are losing fatigue. Also, you would take up room on the game controller by separately assigning a dunk and shoot button.

I usually dismiss this game, but I like what I am seeing.

I bought Live 15, and I play it sometimes. My biggest gripe is it still looks like they use the old mo cap and it doesn't look like any progress has been made with it's tech. I don't really know if this is the case, its just that things still look stiff I guess is the word. Almost like I expect triangles for hands, etc. Just not smooth real like animations. The dribbling is the worst part for me.

I'll buy this game when I find it for $25. I'm sure it will be fun.

I think they should convert the turbo button to an aggressive commit or intention button that affects everything you do, such as more exaggerated dribble moves and harder dribble drives, lunging steal attempts or flying shot contests. Of course it would have to carry risk to it. For instance, getting caught in the air on a pump fake, colliding with a defender for an offensive foul, or losing complete control of your dribble when being defended well.

Didn't the Live team say they added over a 1000 new rim interactions last year?

Hopefully we see more of those this year as well...seemed like the same one's played out the majority of the time in '15

The progression was very noticeable last year. My biggest hope is that the game modes are better. Rising Star was barebones last year. Hopefully they can add more without the need for the forced storylines 2K is offering.

# 35 DBMcGee3 @ 07/09/15 09:58 AM
The off ball animations look great, but I'll need to see more of the collisions at the rim to be sold. I feel like layups and dunks have been a weak point for the series as of late, especially considering what the competitor has done in those areas.

Come on EA, we're all ready for this game to be good. Don't blow it.

Have you seen the competition's player anatomies? They aren't flawless either:

Also, I don't see what you're seeing in the Michael Conley/Isiah Thomas screenshot. Isiah's arms look perfect, to me.

How do 2k's player models have to do with Live's though?

Allow Live to stand on its own two feet, these "but 2k isn't perfect either" responses every time a valid concern is brought up is just silly.
