NBA Live 16 News Post

EA Sports has just released the NBA Live 16 gameplay trailer from the EA E3 2015 press event, as well as a new blog with more details.

The trailer blog mentions the team has taken two years to build the physics-based player movement system called LIVEMotion, with a focus giving players unparalleled control and best-in-class animation. Speaking of animations, the Live team also mentioned that thousands of new ones have been added to the game, which results in contextual free-flowing movement, with no more scripted animation. The team completely rebuilt the passing and catching systems to improve that area of the game and also created a new shot system that provides full control to release the ball when you want.

The Live team has a new mode up its sleeve which they will reveal later this summer. In their words... "Let’s just say it will be the most reliable and stable place to play basketball online with friends." It sounds like some sort of OTP mode, maybe something similar to 2K's MyPARK modes.

They also posted some NBA Live 16 gameplay details, specifically on passing, dribbling, shooting, Live-Motion and more, which you can also read below.

PASSING

This was a sticking point in year’s past. Running a fast-break used to be a chore, but not anymore. For real though, they added a TON of new pass and catch animations. More variety means players move the ball with more intent -- and it looks more natural.

They’ve also upped the responsiveness. In past years, you couldn’t really whip the ball around the perimeter – now – you can pull off various touch passes to put the ball where you want it. They’ve even gone as far to add dribble handoffs.

With all of these new tools on the offensive side of the ball – you’ll be a floor general like a BOSS. There’s not a possession that goes by where you won’t feel and see a notable difference.

DRIBBLING

NBA LIVE has always been about dribble control – so we are all pumped for the return of Freestyle Controls! NBA LIVE 16 really feels like you’re the one pulling off the moves – and not an animation sequence.

There are new controls for pulling off hesitation dribbles and crossovers, making attacking the basket buttery smooth now. Gone are the days of losing all your player’s momentum as you drive the hoop. That’s that physics engine putting in work!

SHOOTING

You aren’t winning if you aren’t scoring. NBA LIVE 16 has brought in a totally new shot system. The release timing is no longer tied to the animation, and is now tied one-to-one with the button press. If you release too early or late you’ll actually see and feel the difference.

Not everyone plays like Chef Curry jacking up 3’s from all over the court – so they’ve also improved a bunch of new signature animations when attacking the hoop or scoring around the basket.

OFF-BALL MOVEMENT (LIVE MOTION)

This feature will have the most notable impact. Remember when dudes would just stand around the court and not move or try to get open, unless you called a play? Those days are over.

Thanks to some revamped AI and what they are calling LIVEmotion – players move around the court with purpose and intensity. You’ll see your CPU buddies fight through screens, make intelligent cuts and more in attempt to get open – all on their own.

Animation quality has also taken a step up in a major way. Dudes won’t be skating all over the court now

And if that ain’t enough, check out some of the moves you can pull off now that you could never do before:
  • Touch passing
  • Dribble handoffs
  • Pick and Roll screen re-screen
  • Attack Ball Screens w/ New Dribble Mechanics
  • Deny NBA superstars away from the ball
  • Bump cutters
  • Push off and get open away from the ball
  • MORE COMING

Nice trailer and it looks more fluid, but it's still a trailer.

As far as animations, it doesn't matter if they add 100 or 5 billion animations, if they don't look right. They have added thousands of animations every year for years, but it didn't matter.

Hopefully, they have something special this time. This finished Live 14 can't be another puzzle piece on the way to a complete game.

Can't wait to see you-know-what.

I watched the trailer live and again on OP, it just does not get me hyped for the game.

Personally I liked the trailer. I dont mind a little lack of fluidity if everything is based on actual physics. Looking forward to seeing more.
i agree, thats the biggest issue i had with the other game.

Don't care for live run because I won't be playing that cheese fest .I've been a dynasty guy all my life n will go back if I can create myself n run point for the raps .

Looks really promising...MUCH improved on 12 months ago and dramatically improved on 24 months ago.

One thing not mentioned though that the game NEEDS is extensive playbooks / teams differentiated. They need to tell us about this before I order a copy.

No point having all these great new things only to see the Warriors and Grizzlies play exactly the same like in LIVE 15.

One thing live is doing is major advancemnts in the actual game each year. 2k makes little gameplay advancemnts / imprivements. looking fwd to live!

Very good post. You have nailed exactly why I still hope LIVE can be worth playing this year. "Anything can happen" / real physics is great in FIFA and I would love to see that kind of stuff in a basketball game.

2K seems to be set on their path for next gen stuff with their same engine. I can understand why they did that (they sell millions / why risk change) but canned animations are really something we should not be stuck with on a PS4 / XBone.

Well said bro..... But only issue I have with the anything can happen feeling based on their last to installments is exactly that. Anything and everything was happening in live 14 & 15 , and none of it was a representing of Basketball. It was a physic/physical mess! Hope it's balanced now and represents basketball. But I'm excited to see what's in store. I need two games this yr

Thank You, finally someone gets it. People keep talking about how stiff things look, but that's because they aren't canned. People can compare games, but the feel and look will always be different. You want to know why? It's because it's supposed to be TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GAMES.

I remember playing NBA Live 15 for 3 months straight and then went back to NBA 2K 15. The controls and gameplay felt so sluggish, but It looked so beautiful. Nobody can deny how great the animations are, but I hated knowing what was going to happen and how it was going to happen. I'm averaging 50 points, 10+ rebound, 5 steals and 5 assists in My Career Mode because I know how to take advantage of these animation. I was also playing on HOF. It's just not fun anymore. It feels the same every year now and you can barely play online. I love 2K and always will, but something has to give.

As for NBA Live, It felt easier to control and you could tell the animations were HEAVILY lacking, but the game showed potential. The thing with them is that they never capitalize on a good product. Example: NBA Live 10... The Live team still has ways to go. I was very impressed with what I saw today, but I want to see consistency from this Franchise. They have lacked consistency since the early-mid 2000's.

All I'm gonna ask people who play 2k is to play the demo and/or rent NBA LIVE 16 to see where it's really at before passing judgment. Don't buy it, but rent it or play the demo to get a fair assessment. All in all, I want both games to succeed. Competition is good for the soul. I'm getting both games because I have the money and resources and I just love basketball games in general.

Just fix the inside game defense and I'm sure most of the community will be happy.

If they are bringing a crew/park like environment I hope to god the steal easiness is bumped up. Online will be a hack fear

"Physics based" is just a phrase until they actually show us how it affects 5 on 5 gameplay.....instances of guys moving each other's arms out of the way does little for me other than cool instant replay moments. Animations aren't stuff because of "physics", they're stiff because that's something Live has struggled with for years. Hopefully with the claim of "world class animation" that changes this year.

With all that said, I've loved everything I've heard today....and it feels like Live is coming out guns blazing....can't wait for more info to drop.

I haven't played Live since Dwight was on the cover and NBA 2K10 took over for me personally. But this had an old Live feel to it because we all know Live was the thing back in the day. Now I know we can't go off of a sizzle trailer but it might actually make some of us try it this year.

One thing me know after today is that live is finally back as a serious game from easports. It's no longer the ugly step child, low budget, unmarketed game.

It's now up there with madden, FIFA and NHL. It's been a long time since it was.

Oh yeah.....trailer was awesome, getting this trailer in June even more better!

I'm actually impressed. Their new shot system is exactly what I've been wanting in 2k for the longest!!!

The EA marketing team needs some work.

These blurbs sound like a teenager wrote them, yo.

"Like a boss" "for real though" "those dudes" "always been about that" "putting in work"

Every time I cam across those "hip" phrases I cringed.
