The Golf Club News Post

HB Studios floated the idea that they would charge $10 for Season Mode in The Golf Club for existing digital customers -- which created some confusion. In a post on The Golf Club website, the folks at HB Studios worked to clear up the confusion:

Quote:
"I’ve had a lot of questions about the disk version and the differences between the disk “Collectors Edition” and the digital version. So let me try and clear everything up for you.

The “Collector’s Edition” is:
  • Current Digital Version with the March Update applied.
  • Additional Season Mode.
  • Tropical Theme.
  • Collectors E-Book (which I don’t know much about as Maximum are sorting this out, and it’s all very secret).
We will then be releasing the May update for both Digital and Disk based customers. This will be a free update as usual, adding:
  • Drop Balls.
  • Out of Bounds.
  • Improved Commentary for Tours and Tournament.
  • More Commentary Variation.
  • Default Drive Loft Setting.
  • Cart Paths.
  • Wind improvements.
  • Rain Effects.
  • Plus more (Dependent on time).
Also included within that is the option to buy the “Collector’s Edition” content with the exception of the E-Book, which is:
  • Season Mode.
  • Tropical Theme.
  • And a bonus Asian Theme (we don’t have a name for this yet).
This is likely to be available for $10, but we’re still evaluating this at the moment.

The most common question we’ve had about the DLC is why does it take 3 weeks for our long term members to get feature parity with the “Collector’s Edition”? Unfortunately, this decision was out of our hands for a couple of reasons. For one, Sony and Microsoft have a set amount of time you have to wait after passing a new product before you can submit a feature update.

While not was initially expected, this isn't a horrible business plan and practice. Such huge additions to the game being added for free was an unrealistic expectation. The only quibble I'd have is the communication of that fact was not clear from the get-go (and from the latest post it still isn't clear), as I'm sure most customers would not have minded the idea of having to spend some extra money had it been clearly communicated at the onset.

Regardless, what do you think of The Golf Club's decision to charge for Season mode and additional themes in the newest DLC update?

Thanks for the support and for coming around these forums, Anthony!

That link is great but, from what I've read, it doesn't really give anything that wasn't in the OP. It seems that there is some confusion about what's paid and what's not. I think everyone understands that the season mode is paid but there seems to be confusion about the Tropical and Asian themes as well as the other additions to GNCD. I understand it as follows:

- Season PAID
- Tropical PAID
- Asian PAID
- Drop balls FREE
- Other GNCD updates FREE
- Commentary updates FREE

Does that sound right to you? If so, I still don't see the answer to my question about whether the Tropical and Asian themes are available to play without purchasing the DLC. It makes sense that you'd need to pay to design with them but I've seen it go both ways with games as far as being able to play with that type of addition.

I still think they should switch to a more normal yearly cycle and just keep the pricing at $39 each time.

As it is now the whole forum (HB) is always on the heels expecting a new update (several threads about how long it has been on there now) and then you have to open up these cans of "DLC pain" that everyone grouses about (not me, but many don't like it when EA does it).

It's always going to sour people to go for more money, whether you do it $10 at a time for DLC or just go for annual money.

Annual releases have the benefit of fresh hype, build up and a new name thus garnering a new review (TGC 2015 w/ Season Mode and new themes!) etc.

...and then it also has the chance to pull in users that tried version 1 and left (like me). People forget about updates and checking back and a new yearly release with some key features is a great signal to try it again.

Woodjer yeah you are correct that is exactly what's paid and what's not. You can't either play or design in the new themes without paying though I'm afraid

Turbineseaplane interesting point of view on the DLC vs yearly paid. I can understand what you're saying and don't necessarily disagree.
The free updates have been great to build the community the DLC has brought some strange reactions though. A lot of it to do with people misunderstanding what it is.

Thanks for the communication, Anthony - we appreciate it. Looking forward to TGC advancing to another level this year.

Best golf game on a console by far!!

I will easily send $10 for new DLC. Love the game...i broadcast on twitch all the time and get plenty of people willing to try it out.

Realism is so good.

Nothing like getting the occasional 8 when putting in a great score up until that point....love the difficulty!

Just looking for some opinions. I will first be getting a PS4 this weekend, not sure if I should get the digital version of the TGC and then get season mode, or just wait for the on disk version?

The cost is basically the same so it comes down to:

1. Do you want the disc in hand
2. Do you want to wait for the disc or be able to buy it digital and have the play time now.
3. Wait for the disc but you will get some content earlier than the digital versions. Digital version will get a May DLC update with the Season mode and new themes.

The comment above about EA being reskinned, at least tiger was a game!!this game is absolutely laziness and then they try to sell it like it's some big simulation golf game when it's just a course creator with a character and stick shot lol. I respect everybody's opinion but I'm in such disbelief because I feel this game is so bad that some of these comments have to be from the developers making up names it just have to be that way this game is that bad

Welcome to the EXTREME MINORITY here. In fact, I think your comments put you on a deserted island. Can't say I agree with anything you posted. Had you followed this game and its development, you would not have spewed the comments you have all over the Golf forum here.

Best Regards,

Anthony Kyne
