NCAA Football 14 News Post

Things definitely look a bit dimmer after the NCAA convention, with any action on licensing of college player likenesses or apparel not seeing any movement during the yearly landmark meeting. I wrote an article on the possibility of new legislation making it possible for college sports games to make a return, but that simply didn't happen. We did see small hints that such a model will be viable in the future, but there are no signs an immediate return in the next 18 months is coming. Coming out of the meeting was landmark four year scholarships and full cost of attendance scholarships -- but no movement on the licensing of player likenesses.

While a future NCAA meeting will likely discuss this issue, thanks to the 'resolution to modernize the collegiate athletics model', until ongoing litigation is dealt with, there likely won't be any real movement.

The issue is with player likenesses and not university licensing correct?

So why don't they just put out a game with the real colleges where the players bear no likeness to the actual rosters. (No "real" players)

Most of us here play dynasties beyond 4 years. After 4 years, player likenesses become a moot point.

In fact, I prefer the game after 4 years because I am playing with "my own recruits." I have never bought the game to play with this or that real college player. I buy it for the long haul dynasties of made up dudes.

Why can't we have a game with real schools (and maybe even real coaches and playbooks/tendencies) and made up dudes? Would it not sell?
Ea was willing to continue even after losing their NCAA license. It's when the conferences and schools actually started pulling out of their license agreements that EA canceled the game. So while the issues arose because of player likenesses, EA lost the right to use many schools and conferences, making a proper college game all but impossible.

This would be all I would need, too. Just focus on the Universities and the coaches. Have the game generate a completely made up roster, based off of the Universities prestige, plus the coaches attributes and tendencies (ex: The game would generate running qb's and FB's to Georgia Tech). Once I'm into the actual dynasty, I don't give a crap about the original roster.

Wasn't it just like the University of Washington, and just a few other schools? I can't recall exactly how all of this went down, but I do remember what you are talking about.

I wonder how difficult it would be for EA to re-license those schools. I would still like if they attempted to continue, and just left out the schools that will not give EA the rights to use their likeness. After a few iterations, you would think those schools would come back. It's essentially free marketing for their athletic programs. That may be an opportunity for EA to work with the FCS schools to a much greater degree.

I don't have much knowledge on the legality of everything though, so I'm just doing some wishful thinking out loud.

It was a few conferences and a few schools, but then EA dropped the game. It's likely that more schools would've bowed out if EA hadn't cancelled the series.

The most important ones were Ohio State and the SEC pulling out. But, you're right: more schools almost certainly would have followed.

I was never a huge college football fan (being a Syracuse fan, I have very little to cheer for lol), but I just love where EA was going with the NCAA game. I got desperate this past week and went back to my 360 to fire it up, but the drop off from PS4 to Xbox 360 is just so big that it takes a lot away from playing it.

I would do terrible things to get NCAA Football and College Hoops 2k back.

And I would support you for doing those terrible things.

after Miami went to the ACC, I would always pick Syracuse as my springboard team in the Big East (can we talk about how much better Big East is as a conference name than AAC sometime?)

I remember one year, I was in my 5th season with SU, and made it to the BCS NC against USC, my starter was already hurt, my backup QB got hurt in the first quarter, so I put in my all everything CB (who was an athlete) in at QB

This was the year that the speed option was basically the win button, so I ran up and down the field all day with him, but kept having trouble punching it in

I had to run a 2 minute drill in the last 50 seconds to win the game with a CB who had like 75/75 THP/THA , and actually got it done

easily one of the best games I enjoyed

O how I wish it would make it's return.

I really hope this game comes back. It's one of the only games that I actually like.

its a bummer that the last version was at the end of PS3. We also got the worst pregame presentation in years... at least it links up with Madden... but that is PS3 only too. No playoff yet either.
Just one more release we needed. Maybe they could have added a tad more customization too
