Front Page Sports Football News Post

Back in 2009, Cyanide released a web based version of Front Page Sports Football, but don't be mistaken, this wasn't a remake of the Sierra Online versions many of us played in the 90's. In fact, in 2009, when we interviewed the Producer, Régis Robin, he had this to say:

Quote:
Operation Sports: First off, the question everyone is wondering, is this game related to the old Front Page Sports Football series?

Régis Robin: It is related in terms of the name and "core values". We are fans of the series and so we aimed to create a game which focused on strategy and management instead of requiring proficiency with a gamepad. When looking for a name, we discovered that the original Dynamix trademark had expired and so "Front Page Sports Football" was reborn.

With that said, Cyanide is set to bring Front Page Sports Football back again this year for PC users, before the season officially kicks off. We are trying to line up an interview, so if you have have any questions, feel free to post them here.

Read the full press release below.

Be the GM and Coach You Fantasize About with “Front Page Sports Football"!

Football fever about to kick into full swing, and while you prepare to gorge yourself on the games and fantasy football, Cyanide is bringing back a blast from the past for you to enjoy this season: Front Page Sports Football! This classic American Football PC video game license from back in the 90’s is now being brought back to life as one of the most rich and detailed sport management games on PC.

With Front Page Sports Football players will be able to manage a US football team of their creation and make all the decisions that a real manager or coach would make during a season. Just like every other general manager, players will compose the best team (from the draft, signing free agents and the like, as well as manage many other details like morale, affinity, finances, training sessions, etc.

At the same time players will fill the role of coach, setting a game plan for every match through a playbook of over 2,300 unique plays. They will also have access to a range of orders and actions to improve management of the team. Players can also watch full 2D or 3D replays of their game and consult a wide range of statistics to improve his team moves, anticipate the reaction of his challengers, and much more.

Front Page Sports Football is coming soon, just in time for the upcoming football season. It will be self-published by Cyanide and available for PC.

Thanks for the update and link. Doesn't seem to be a Free Agency period ? That is strange. And only 2 preseason games? And what is this all about; "During the playoff and final periods, the eliminated teams play exhibition games"?

You'd think they'd try and make a realistic game and not take shortcuts. I'm going to try and avoid posting judgment until the games out and I know all the details for sure, but what I'm reading about this game thus far sounds a bit odd.

I just saw this thread and my heart started racing. Seriously.

Then I looked into it on the website and read this.

A Pro season is made up of 2 pre-season games, 16 regular season games, 3 playoff games and one final. During the playoff and final periods, the eliminated teams play exhibition games.

WTF!!!!! Dream crushed just like that. I can only imagine other "unrealistic" features.

yeah that's weird
I wish they had made it so that you could use real league templates like NFL,AFL,WAFL...etc

One thing thats frustrated me about them is the lack of information and clarification. I can only hope that after the game is released they'll be open to suggestions otherwise a huge opportunity will be lost.

I'm afraid of getting my hopes dashed too, but other than an aesthetics thing it doesn't really sound like a huge deviation from a real league schedule. If you want to play 4 pre-season games just like the NFL, one would think the game is set up so you can play any "practice game" outside of the league schedule anytime you want. As for the two exhibition games during the "final", just ignore them...

Well it seems like its not as much like FB Pro98 as I thought
You cant make plays, only playbooks..

# 48 mestevo @ 09/20/14 12:29 PM
With plenty to play right now the kinda arbitrary deviations from the nfl format I'll probably hold off until it's on sale.

Did they do stuff like this with their baseball product?

# 49 zllehs @ 09/20/14 12:55 PM
I'm still concerned about there not being a Free Agency Period. Are we only supposed to buid from the draft?

Not trying to defend the developers if the game turns out to be a joke. But does anyone know if they have NFL games broadcast in France with French speaking announcers? Or NFL print/online publications in French? I'm guessing that the developers may be more fans of the FPS:Football Series than they are of actual NFL football. The original series(and the Baseball series) had many odd quirks to them. This game may replicate some of that. Still, I have my hopes up...

Devs to appear to be relatively responsive on the Steam community, answering the couple of questions that have popped up.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/316700/discussions/

Q: Hello to the team- will you be able to adjust/ set the view on the field like the original game? Also, for your team and players, will you be able to edit their names, etc?

A: Hi there,
At the moment, the 3D view will remain the top view you can see in the screenshots. You'll be able to play en replay some specifics moments of the game, and to switch at anytime you want to 2D view.
You'll be able to custom many things in your team as well as coach name, profile, jersey colors, team logo, etc.

---

He mentions a lot, but not players, hopefully that's just an accident or covered by 'many things in your team'

I played the precursor to this, the now dead online version, as an early beta tester. I dont remember much of the details but I do remember the engine was very rudimentary. I dont know if it has developed much except for going 3D but the AI was pretty awful back then. Backs would follow the path in the play exactly regardless of what was in front of them for instance. It looks to me from the videos that all players use the same crappily animated model and are all the same height and weight. Throws also look like they have no arc, they just zip to the WR. This isnt really a problem though if just plays a good game of football in 2D view.

The really cool thing about the online version though was the fact that it was a connected world from HS to College to PRO. There was sillyness like a HS draft but all in all it was cool to be able to scout for the draft by watching players play in actual college games. It seems this will not be in the single player version as it is not mentioned in any description.

I also dont think it will be anything like FPSF when it comes to customization. There will probably not be a play editor (although if a community develops it is not impossible one could surface). I think from reading everything they have announced that it is unlikely we can run leagues of different sizes or schedules. We are probably stuck with a NFL-style 32 team 16 week league (as far as i remember there were no byes in the online).

I am afraid we are all expecting to much of this game. Having said that I liked what they did with Blood Bowl and their cycling manager games have been successfull even if I never played them so I dont have an opinion on them. They were responsible for making a embarrasing mess of the GoT franchise...

Comes out in an hour. Hm, still don't know a ton about it but I'm excited to have another textbased football game out there. I don't expect it to top Front Office Sports Seven, but I guess we'll see.

# 58 12ner @ 10/02/14 04:05 PM
My expectations weren't high but this game is an alpha version being marketed as a full version.

The potential is there but they should have spent another year developing it.
I expected the game to lack features but the basic fundamentals of the game are poor at this point.

Damn. I'd been waiting for this to cme out. Now I'm just disappointed.

Oh well. Might just have to give front office football a go, and continue waiting for beyond the sideline from the OOTP guys.
