When it was released in 2004, NFL 2K5 was one of the best playing and best presented sports games you could find. For the bargain-bin price of $20, you could get gameplay and features which rivaled any full priced sports game at the time — if not wholly surpassing them.

Fast forward 10 years and there are still aspects of NFL 2K5 which have aged pretty well — but there are also things which would be cardinal sins to sports gamers today. NFL 2K5 definitely wasn’t a perfect game, but it was about as good as you could imagine a game could be 10 years ago, which is one of the highest compliments you can give a game.

2k5 was solid, but Madden 05 was legendary in my book...second only to Madden 02. I wish 2k still had the opportunity to make NFL games because they were advancing at an extraordinary rate.

Everytime I think back to how great NFL 2k5 was, I can't help but imagine where football gaming would be had 2k still been making NFL 2k. Madden 2005 was also a good game but took a huge turn for the worse on the jump to PS3/Xbox360, and Madden has been the slowest evolving AAA sports franchise. If you look at Madden 15, you think it's great to see the team finally making the right improvements (though this has been said before). However, I feel Madden 15 is going to be the Madden that should have been accomplished last gen, minus obvious graphic improvements. In my opinion, not one Madden held a candle up to NFL 2k5 all of last gen. This is what also keeps NFL 2k5 so relevant - not just where NFL 2k would've been today, but the idea of where Madden would be had they still had 2k as competition.

I agree madden 05 and the introduction of the hitstick was legendary... The Espn presentation is the only thing this game had going for them in my opinion.. The ball floated when passed were thrown and/or deflected, player models looked like blitz players, and the game was played in slow motion

A game that was way ahead of it's time. There is stuff in that game that they still haven't re-produced 10 years later. The best thing about this game was that it cost EA huge dollars to corner the NFL market...not a good thing for gamers but good to see someone at least challenge EASports.

Great game, the passing was ahead of it's time and still has not been replicated, 3-5-7 step drops, route based passing, great passing animations from the roll outs to the wind up on deep passes. Many did not like the drawn out feel of the animations and lack of instantaneous control of players but I think it added a level of realism to the control, it was a great balance of user control and ratings affecting how the player controlled. I also loved the tapping. Not for everybody which is understandable, but I loved just about every aspect of gameplay. It definitely had it's warts, stiff running animations, money plays, DB AI, running backs that broke 5 tackles a play but there were more positives than negatives IMO.

Agreed. Loved how critical timing on passing plays was. Playing with a new team and/or playbook was actually a huge disadvantage, you really needed to practice and get familiar with the timing of the plays, the speed of your players, arm strength of the QB, etc. I disagree with the article that the passing had big issues it was more the defense.

The Sports Center part with Chris Berman was legendary indeed. All sports games need to adopt this now, especially as we are now entering "next generation".

2K5 is a classic. Why? Because it is a game people remember and respected. It falls with Tecmo Bowl, the original Madden on Sega, and Mutant Leagur Football.

I enjoyed it when it came out but I preferred Madden 05. The only thing I enjoyed more in 2K5 was the presentation immersion, that is still the best to this day. I felt the gameplay is Madden was better.

Without a doubt an All Time Classic! This football game is a legend. The only way to get people to forget a legend, is to replace it with another legend. Madden is the sole reason that the legend of NFL2K5 continues to grow.

I still play this game til this day because the other option still doesn't get things right that this game nailed.

I loved this game and it does make you wonder how it would have evolved today. There was so much going for it..like the article said no it wasn't perfect but it was a damn good sim football game.

Loved the little detail in running the ball, when you went through a hole your guy would turn his shoulders slightly to get through the hole better, the QB evade, taking steps to complete a pass, loved it all

The weekly prep was very nice also, loved working out players and getting them ready for the big game on Sunday. Not saying it wasn't but I don't remember the passes being floaty, I remember if you pressed the pass button it was a lob pass but if you held down the pass button it threw a hard bullet pass. All in all a classic for me
