Madden NFL 15 News Post

While there has some some question as to the status of the exclusivity of the Madden license, owing to the fact the last mention of the license by EA only said there were a number of years left on it with no mention of exclusivity. That was never a guarantee that the license wasn't exclusive, as EA hadn't mentioned in official documents that the license was either extended or exclusive since the initial deal -- the news of the prior extension was never fully confirmed by EA.

Expecting a different approach where EA held a pomp and circumstance parade has led to a rash of unfounded rumors that another competitor, namely 2K, was developing a football game. There was even an unfounded expectation that 2K might even debut a football title at E3.

However, the biggest news to come out of the 2K camp at E3 might have been Ronnie2K confirming that not only was 2K not working on a football game, but that the license was still exclusively owned by 'someone else.'

This isn't surprising, considering the NFL license being open for other partners would have almost certainly leaked by now by someone. The current deal's term length which has been widely speculated and rumored is that Madden still has two to three years in its current deal, pushing the game well into this new generation.

It still remains unlikely, even if the license was open, that a competitor could rise up to compete with Madden in any reasonable amount of time given the more advanced needs of today's sports gaming audience. Thus, given the license's current status, it is possible that any possible competitor wouldn't be ready for release for at least 18-24 months after the license was actually acquired by someone, which puts the most reasonable timeframe for a Madden competitor at least four to five years from now, if ever. The most likely scenario remains that EA and Madden will remain the only major NFL gaming option on big box consoles for the foreseeable future.

Just wait to buy it used this way EA is not the one getting your sale.

For as long as EA holds the exclusive NFL license I will never ever even consider buying Madden and giving EA my money. I would feel so dirty!

Everything played our as I expected. 2K football is dead, and folks need to except it.

This makes his challenge while holding a title belt even better. A true heel tactic to challenge your enemy when you know he can't touch you.

I wish I didn't like football so much so I wouldn't have to give EA my money every august. Lost a lot of respect for Rex here, but my love of football won't let me hold back from buying.

How would you all feel if you put immense time, effort and energy into something only to have an audience of naysayers keep saying your work isn't good enough?
LOL well make it good enough or better and people wouldn't do that and that's a fact.

I don't see people that play the Show always comparing the current version to say MVP 2005 and saying how the latter was so much better. I don't see anyone comparing NBA 2k14 to say Lakers vs Celtics. I don't see anyone comparing NHL to Blades of Steel. These comparisons are not made because the current games, even with their flaws are far superior to the previous ones. Bottom line make a superior game in EVERY way and they won't hear it. In addition, these comparisons are the price they have to eat because their corporate team eliminated all the competition. So all eyes are on you jack and when you don't produce it make it look that much worse.

What would 2K football look like now? Always online for single player, crap online servers and VC everywhere.

Personally I think it's really a overblown thing.

Then to hear about the challenge to 2k, wow, i believe NFL put it up for bid and EA won, so not sure how he thinks 2k can buy the licenese if they have the exclusive contract? who knows.

Maybe one day we will see another 2k vs ea battle, i was a huge supporter of madden, then madden 06/07/08/09 etc came out and at that point, you come to expect disappointment. Glad the cones back tho

that's about when i stopped playing madden, at the start of the last-gen. That's when the game was still good, at least

So now we know the truth... REX yells at 2k 2000miles away
. Probably how he grew up. We 2k still has my money for 15. Well you can't extended forever, but what do you expect from cowards

I agree. This was a clown move on his part.

Yes, he as asked a question. That doesn't mean he should have handled it like that. That is like me going up to a blind kid in a wheelchair and screaming in his face "COME AT ME BRO!"

At the end of the day, it isn't that huge a deal, I just think it makes the him and his team look pretty bad. I would be confident too if I knew there was literally no way for my game to be challenged.

I was disappointed when people said they thought the interview was great. Everyone has a right to their opinion, not saying they are wrong for that view, just like I am not wrong for being disappointed. Just saying, I think the guy comes off like a real clown.

Right, he's saying the response Rex gave was in response to a hypothetical question.

Haven't listened to it myself and don't really care to to be honest.

Not sure why everyone is up in arms about Rex answering a question posed entirely hypothetically with an entirely hypothetical challenge to an entirely hypothetical opponent. If he had said no comment, got a feeling same people would be up in arms about that too...

Just make a better game and he wouldn't have to worry about it. If Madden played fantastic people wouldn't be hounding him over 2k.

I don't think this is an excuse. He knew what he was saying. He knew 2k had no chance of making a game no matter what. Again, do I hate the guy? No. I don't know anything about him. Just saying, in this one instance, he made a clown move.

To me it's not what you say sometimes but how you say it. I don't like all that big **** talking when you know you can't be challenged. That's some clown ****. It was funny, but it was some clown ****. Can't support clown ****.

A bunch of you are getting all worked up over nothing.

It would be interesting if someone did make a play for the license. Basically starting to build a football from the ground up now, releasing a generic game the last year of the exclusivity agreement to gain some public momentum. Of course that is unrealistic because no company could make an investor want to take that financial risk, but it would be an interesting strategy.

I do wonder though, with the success of MLB the Show, if a first party studio would make a football game like San Diego Studios does for Sony. I'm not sure if the current agreement prohibits something like that, but that could be interesting as well.

It's all about perception man. I noticed the people who enjoy Madden are quicker to light the torch for it and say people are complainers and cry babies and want a perfect game. From my perception none of that is true, but from theirs, well you know the rest.

Current agreement doesn't allow for anyone but EA to make console football, not even first party...assuming terms are the same as they were when it was initially signed, which there's no indication that isn't the case.
