Can a team of defensive all-stars take down a team like Miami? Read on...

It’s time to answer the age old question: Does defense really win championships?

We felt like it was time to put NBA 2K14 to this test. By placing the game's best defensive players on one team, could they make it all the way through the rigid 82-game schedule, and be the last team standing come June?

However, the roster does have its limitations I've implemented: no player rated higher than 79 overall. The goal of this was to truly look at defense in NBA 2K14. If I had Chris Paul on my team who has ridiculous defensive ratings, then would my team win because of his defense or because he’s a monster in all aspects of the game? Keeping everybody under an overall of 80 makes sure to specifically target defense and how it affects success in NBA 2K14.

You had no point guard on the team. The centers you considered good defensively are not that good defensively. It takes more than blocks and steals to be a good defender. This article is fail.

Interesting experiment, but somewhat flawed. When somebody says "defense wins championships" that doesn't literally mean a team full of defensive specialists will win a championship....it's saying of the elite teams the most defensive minded will probably win a championship. You still have to be able to score.

I love the idea but I feel that your conclusion is off. Defense does win championships but that doesn't mean that having a squad of players who can't score is going to win. The Pacers are considered to be the best defensive team but they still have players who can put up points (Paul George, David West, Roy Hibbert, Danny Granger, and even Lance Stephenson). When someone says that defense wins championships, they mean that when it comes down to it (after having leaders, scorers, and great role players), you need to stop the opposing team.

So they match up against the Heat who also have a decently rated defense, but a far superior offense. How about a match up of a team of high rated offensive/low defensive players against this team?

Defense alone will not win you a championship if you are going up against another team that is very good on both sides of the ball.

Good read and experiment, but you need some offense to take advanatage of the good defense.

Well I have not played 2k14, still rocking 2k13.... but since 2k10, if you want to win and be a monster in 2K, your team needs big time rebounders, it's hard to lose in this game if you outrebound your opponent. Just what I've noticed in the last few nba 2ks.

I did a similar thing but with better defenders and scorers. Still held opponents to a whopping 97 ppg.

I watched a few games CPU vs CPU and defense didn't make a bit of difference.

Zac Arthur,

I get what you're doing with this article, but playing Avery Bradley and Courtney Lee as point guards just doesn't make sense if you plan to simulate the games.

Your logic that Bradley can play point because he is 6'2" and Lee offers a "height advantage" makes sense if YOU play the games, but neither player has point guard attributes (passing, offensive awareness, etc) that make them good for SIMULATION purposes.

Try running the simulation with actual point guards who play defense: Kyle Lowry, Rajon Rondo, Mike Conley, Kirk Hinrich

Good read. Outcome was just what I expected.

a similation engine will never be 100% accurate

Defense does win but you cant be one dimensional on anything. You cant just be a team full of great defensive players nor can you beat a team just full of offensive players. This team maxed out their potential going 39-43. None of these guys are first, second or third options.

Why wouldn't you get jimmy Butler and Thabo Sefolosha or Maurice Harkless or Danny Green or Michael Kidd - Gilchrist
