NBA 2K14 News Post

The last week of September is one of my favorite weeks of the year.

First because my birthday falls in that week. Second because the new version of the NBA 2K series usually starts appearing in mom and pop stores and on eBay.

I have spent a lot of time every year running around the DC area looking for stores selling the game early or bugging fellow OS'ers about eBay auctions or Craigslist listings. I’ve travelled to different states and paid almost twice the price just to get the game early. Needless to say I’m nuts when it comes to NBA 2K -- except for this year.

As release week came around, I wasn’t sure that I was going to try to get the game early. None of the promoted improvements and additions had me excited and I have been more focused on what the next-gen version of the game will look and play like.

So when Steve reached out and asked me to preview and eventually to review the game, I was happy about it but aware that my excitement level was much lower than in past years.

Did playing this year's game reignite my excitement for this year's current generation release? Let's find out.

Just reading your summary, not sure how this even warranted an 8.5. No desire to play this rehashed title.

Think I'll pass on Roster Update 2K14.

Edit: Should clarify this is towards the PS3/360 version. Next gen should be legit for 2K.

i like the review. it confirmed what i was hoping for with this game, gameplay improvements. ironically, the line that this will test what OS'ers say about just improve the gameplay was answered by the reviewers own score.

last year 2k13 scored a 9,5. everything the reviewer said implied this game is the same game with much better gameplay. Score 8.5.

to be fair, the same thing happened with the madden 13 to 14 score, but from the review comments you would think the drop would have been only .5 points not a full point.

Good to hear that you had that experience. Maybe it's just small sample stuff based on my experience. I'll go play other teams like Houston, San Antonio and Miami and see if it's any better.

if you asked me based on this review..8.5 is being really nice smh lol..depending on what you look for in this game

what i took from this is that this is about the same game from last year except with re-done mode with untouched modes, some features that was in their past games with some new animations and a new control scheme...did i miss anything...o yeah updated roster maybe lol

I think it's about right...

Slightly off-topic: i see from the review that there were no significant changes to Association and MyCareer so does that mean:
1. New CBA is not in there?
2. They did not fix cheap VC rewards when completing drills

I have only played about 4 NBA today games as of now.

I will say I'm glad I only paid $24 for the PC version of the game. After dropping several hours into My Career (enough to get ball handling/passing near max on a PG) I'm just about disgusted at present. The Heat can do no wrong... even Greg Oden dribbles, drives and passes like he's LeBron. lol

No matter what the team is though, it seems like if the player is 80 or above on the AI's team they won't suffer the same short comings your team does. Players even with a 90 ball handling are just 'dropping' the ball on drives or post attempts... it's frustrating. Especially when you add in the fact they went back to 2011/2012's control scheme... which makes driving more difficult in and of itself.

The physics themselves, along with the graphical changes are impressive. But it feels like so many players on my team have just been hit by the stupid stick that it's frustrating. Watching Oden throw OVER two players to Wade standing in the paint is annoying. Or watching Blake Griffin drop dimes like Nash from the 3 point line consistently... *shakes head* It's not realistic at all.

No idea how it all works, but does anyone know how this will translate to next gen? will gameplay be as good as CG or do they basically have to start all over again when creating the next gen game leaving it maybe a little bit short? Obviously presentation and graphics looks like it will be amazing, but im really a gameplay guy, and cant wait to get it when it drops tomorrow in australia.

justifiable review, i just wish creators would spend as much time on game play as a whole meaning from the on court activities to the commentary to the reaction and actions of crowd as they do on game modes, thats one thing the ncaa dynasty didnt mess up...but cant wait to pick up the game when i get home from out of town

Depending on what I look for in the game is an 8.5.

Good, honest review, Aaron.

I was already thinking about passing on this gen, and you just helped justify that decision. Game play is important to me, but a new or at least touched up Association mode is just as important. Plus, I don't want to get a month and a half in to an Association only to start over on PS4. At this point, I'm just waiting on more next gen news.

Cannot wait to play! Could not wait the 2 months for X1!

# 35 riggs6taters @ 10/03/13 03:22 PM
Kind of joke to give the game an 8.5 when it's basically a roster update...nothing has changed

# 36 WarlordZMaster @ 10/03/13 08:38 PM
Some games are good enough the some slight tweaks and a roster update are all that is needed. Madden is an example of going backward trying to make something better, Madden 10 rocks.

So, I have seen the CPU run the baseline during an inbound pass after a made basket but can not figure out how to do it this year......Last year this was done by Holding LT and using the right stick to move.........Last year it was explained under passing in the advanced controls but this year it is no where to be found.......Did 2k possibly forget to include this for the user but leave it in for the cpu
