Madden NFL 25 News Post

EA Sports has confirmed position changes are back for Madden NFL 25. You can make these changes in the offseason of your Connected Franchise. Commissioners will have the ability to limit position changes as well.

Quote:
Players will also see their ratings accurately reflect their position change based on the realistic difficulty curve of changing positions in the NFL. If for example you want to move Tebow from QB to TE, he will receive an awareness penalty to reflect such a drastic and difficult position change. If however, you are a little deeper at Right Guard, you can opt to move one to Center with no ratings penalty.

The next step is to use "G" and "DE" and "T" for positions and not differentiate among LT and RT for positions (they should be separate positions in depth charts but not on rosters). I mean when as a coach you spend XP making it easier to sign LT but not RT?

This is nice, it was killing me in Madden 13 not being able to officially designate Luke Kuechly as a MLB.

LT are a lot more important than RT in real life....

Great re-addition. I always felt players should take a knock in football intelligence when switching and assimilating into a new position in-game, it's great that EA addressed this so there are some limit so as to create a give-n-take.

Yes, there is a difference. I'm not on board with it being "more important" but, Madden takes none of that into account, and doesn't even really have a rating(that I can think of) to differentiate, for the rating(s) of LT vs RT. So it makes little difference anywhere but on the depth chart.

We have been able to edit a player's posistion since Madden 05, In Madden 12 you could edit any player to any position at anytime. It was only taken out in M13. Madden 13 limited pretty much all roster management of any kind so trickling some of this back on a more limted basis does not excite me.

Only if you have a right handed QB.

Not to mention it's realistic and teams do it all the time.

"Positions" in real life are no where near as limiting as they are in video games. It's just where you line up and your responsibilities on that play.

If Tebow is decent at throwing and decent a catching in traffic and using size like a TE, the he should be decent at both. What's the need for the designation other than during contract time (where it matters then mostly for franchise player tagging)?

Things get exploited not because of position changing but because the game can't represent the demands of the position. If a QB can play DT, that's not position changing, that's inability to require size, strength, and power at DT. Banning changing is just yet another case of focusing on the symptom instead of the cure.

Same with this "awareness penalty". Why have a global penalty and not some sort of experience system like in OOTP? If a guy has played that spot before in real life (like say I switch Suggs back and forth from DE to OLB), why is he going to be penalized? And why just awareness? Why not PRC? Or CTH? or RTE? or M/ZCV? Reading the field, the play, the keys, etc, is all different.

Ideally you should be able to put any player at any position. You want your lineman to play receiver? So be it. Wanna have your DT play QB and throw every ball in the dirt? That should be your choice without having to go through some process.

Think of the early 2000s Patriots when they'd have Vrabel line up at TE or Seymour at FB. This is impossible in Madden. If it's in the game, it's probably not in Madden.

Look at the Jaguars and Denard Robinson. You should be able to have him play QB, WR, RB, whatever without having to lock him into one role.

How are they going to handle Patrick Peterson playing WR? Are you going to have to move him there?

Also, are players going to be limited in regards to which positions they can be switched to? If so, what a load of garbage.

Give us complete control EA!

I like how that blog post announcement CLAIMS you can change Josh Cribbs to QB...

"How about moving Ryan Tannehill to WR or Josh Cribbs to QB like they played in college? Now you can. With Madden NFL 25, you can make position changes at any point in the offseason of your Connected Franchise. You can also make all position changes on your roster and then bring that custom roster into the beginning of your Connected Franchise."

But in reality, that option is NOT available during the offseason. You cannot move a WR to any other position at ANY time after beginning a franchise. Likewise, you cannot move ANY position to QB at any time after beginning a franchise.

You also can't move any defensive players to offense at any point after beginning a franchise. The only way to get a defensive player on offense is via extremely limited depth chart adjustments while IN A GAME, such as subbing in your MLB at TE. I think some offensive playbooks actually include plays that put your CB on the field as one of the WR's (I forget which playbook, might be the Power Run playbook).

It's nice that the option is available before you start a franchise, but frustrating that it's heavily implied in the official blog post as being an option in the offseason, yet it's actually not.

Very frustrating indeed, and why can't I move my undersized speedy LB to safety in the offseason??? Or my fast OL to TE, or my huge TE to OL, or - why the heck are their restrictions anyway???

EA just doesn't get it...
