NHL 14 News Post

Ben Ross, Gameplay Producer of NHL 14 has posted details on goalie improvements in the game. In the article, he details goalie intelligence, animations and movement, fighting through screens, against one-timers, rebounds and more.

Intelligence
  • Goalies intelligence was improved to increase their ability to read the play and determine if the player is likely to deke, pass or shoot based on the scoring situation.
  • Goalies will stay out and challenge on shots rather than pulling the puck back in with them (also fixes the issue where goalies would pull slower shots in with them as they moved backwards when saving.)
  • Goalies will stay in a save/position if they are aware they are going to be hit by the puck that is on its way. The goalie will no longer blend to another save if not necessary which was sometimes a disadvantage.
  • Goalies show more urgency in getting back to cover open parts of the net, part of heightened awareness.
  • Goalies react more realistically to deflections based upon whether they can see the initial shot cleanly or if they need to square up and make a save with one of their limbs.
  • Goalies will react more realistically to shot fakes, opening up areas of the net and creating more goal-scoring possibilities if the move is used correctly.

Animations & Movement
  • Fixed saves where it appeared that the goalie was able to move back up against their momentum/gravity when making a save (again, no more “Spider-Man” Goalies).
  • Improved butterfly save space – goalie won’t be locked in butterfly on dekes and will be more conscious of moves to the forehand and consider them more dangerous.
  • Added more saves out of Vertical-Horizontal and Butterfly styles so that the goalie can stay in those poses and react to pucks that are going to hit them (makes staying big and cutting off an angle more effective).
Fighting Through Screens
  • Goalies’ field of vision and puck awareness were corrected to be more realistic. If a puck is out of sight, the goaltender will work harder to fight through screens.
Against One-Timers
  • Goalies won’t give up the short side if they have defensive help and are more likely to cheat to the short side if the attacking player is on their forehand. True to real-life.
  • Goalies will anticipate a pass on a two-on-one if the puck carrier is on their backhand or doesn’t put themselves in a good shooting position (winding back, gliding, sells shot).
  • The closer the shooter is to the net, goalies will try to take away more of the bottom of the net. The further out shooters are, the more they try to get a limb half way up the net to be able to move up/down since the shooter now has a better chance to get height on the shot. The negative to this is exposing more holes and not creating as good of a solid wall like they can when the shooter is close.
  • The more a goalie has to move and the less he can see the puck both have effects on his ability to make a direct save compared to when they are squared up for a shot and reading the release right off the stick. In these cases, the goalie will try to slide across and take away the shooters best chance and then react to the puck once they can see it.

Rebounds
  • AI & animation improvements were made to allow goalies to better handle rebounds and second-chance opportunities off the rush. Goalies can now recover more quickly to handle a bad rebound, especially if they lose the puck within their body/equipment.
  • Goalies will recognize low shots better and attempt to kick the rebound to the corner more often.

You can't play an online game these days without playing someone who doesn't understand hockey but can glitch goal everytime. It's depressing.
That's because EA doesn't reward good hockey. My opponent goes for an unnecessary hip check leading to a 2-0. The good hockey play would be to wait the goalie out and feed my teammate for a tap in. Well in 13 if you do that you end up without a goal 95% of the time. I played on an EASHL team last year that you would have to beg people to shoot because everyone would try to make the extra pass to setup a good scoring chance. This year? 2-0, 3-0 guys are racing to the net, not thinking once about passing, because that's somehow a higher percentage shot (and because poke check physics are ridiculous) in this game.

I wish they would make strafing the blue line inside the offensive zone easier. It looks silly seeing defensemen spin away from the net like in the video.

i agree.
they should just have the skaters do that automatically like hitz pro did.
i dont really wanna have to hit a button or a trigger for that.

how in the world, even since 07, do these guys on NHL team not fix the shots etc going in top shelf off the posts at a high %? i mean, listen, i get you want us to have full control, but if a certain shot is going in a high % of the time, cant they nerf goals from certain spots after 1 or 2 is scored? make the shots go high and wide, off post and wide, make goalie glove or blocker save them etc?

there has to be something they could do.. but im sure they dont want to take that user control away. heck, they could take it away and not even tell us. we would then think wow, they changed it up etc.

What about goalie passing? The pass accuracy has always been ridiculous. Will this ever get better?

Fiddy, you've been here long enough to know that what they care is that there's no too many 2-1 games online so people don't buy it.

This game since EASHL have totally shifted towards EASHL and UHL. If something don't make sense there, they'll work on it. Otherwise, take a number.

They should change the disclaimer on the box saying the experience may change online. In fact, the label should say : "This game been programmed to be played 6 vs. 6. Anything other than that can cange the experience and we're not responsible."

It's the way it is. Simply look at the presentation and the AI for the last few years. Big video stunt, big entertaining campaign, but overall, same bad taste in the mouth. Presentation is so useless online (Press A dammit) that they even implemented no team celebrations after a goal so now the people can showboat like idiots after scoring. On the AI side, defensively, it's been getting worse with years, forcing you to either play 6 vs. 6 or to play something else.

The real problem is that when you play 6 on 6 and there's no idiots, that game is so fun to play that it just gives them more fuel not really pushing it of offline players. On top of it, it's the guys playing online who buy boost and equipment slots that are getting more money in. They are getting it first and we have to wait.

It's sad, but it's like that. Fighting is like presentation online, with years, makes me thing that it's almost useless.

What happened to ai learning? they should have that for the goalies, so when a team takes the same shot every time it will be shut down, force them to change the way they have to score , it only has to be until they start taking other looks then they could open it back up later in the game.

Where are these shots being taken from? If a guy is in the high slot with great shooting position and time and space to get off the shot. He should maintain great accuracy. If he is being arrassed by a defender accuracy should suffer. I don't mind beating guys top shelf a lot because if I have an easy shot from the slot because people wanna pull themselves out of position, then the goalie shouldnt bail them out time and time again. It should be more that your good defense forces a bad quality shot, and for the goalie an easy save.

The plays that irk me the most, are the 2 on 2 plays where you play the passing lane, and the gaolie still overplays the pass and gives up the short side shot. Not realitic in that the defense dictates that the goalies should stay with the shooter. And your AI defenseman, won't take the pass, nor will he pressure the shooter. This seems to be fixed, At least the way the goalie plays it anyway. The other play that irks me is what I call the soft shot exploit. Guys will shoot soft or even saucer pass it to the goalie. the puck bounces off the pads and trickles out front. But the goalie whil in the butterfly doesn't cover and glides away from the puck leaving easy rebound goals Those 2 situations piss me off. If I allow someon to just skate into the slot with space and a chance to rip a wrister, I am not mad at the game if they score, I am made at myself for playing shoddy defense. That is one of the easiest thing to stop. Protect the slot first and foremost.
