NHL 14 News Post

EA Sports was showing a slew of current-gen games at E3 this year, and I got a chance to go hands-on with NHL 14 for the PS3. Even though this current-gen game is being slightly overshadowed by the next-gen horizon of FIFA, Madden, UFC and NCAA, the producers on NHL appeared confident in their product. They feel that it addresses some lingering concerns and adds a lot of intensity, thanks to revamped hitting and fighting. From what I played – on Pro difficulty, admittedly – the game seems as rock-solid as ever, and the new additions add something meaningful to the mix.

How about Be A Pro?

Is there full control of the stick on defense ala nhl 2k10's defensive right stick. Or is that still tied to a hold of RB and right stick, but really, wasn't done very will in 13 in my opinion. 2k10 still has the best defensive stick control.

Would have liked to hear how the AI was on higher levels. Should we still expect cheats, boosts and last-minute heroics?

If they still have no improvements to BeAGM and better stat tracking, I'll be passing for the first time in years. I've had enough of the same game repackaged.

This better be a step in the right direction after the leap backwards they took in 13. the GM connected mode better have major improvements as well...

Maybe you are restricted from EA from saying anything. But I hope pres and announcers have changed for the better. If you are restricted you need to say this in your blog.

THIS! I want to see the stats from previous games or better yet, give you stat info regarding how you are doing vs specific teams, specially those that are in your division.

Stats, particularly the goalie's, are pretty messed up with NHL 13. Combining my two goalies, the total games played is ALWAYS more than 82 games in the regular season. HOW CAN THAT BE EA??? EXPLAIN PLEASE!!!!

Fighting is looking and sounding amazing. Between that and the hitting (my #1 most wanted improvement) I'm super excited to get my hands on this.

if your goalie is pull and the backup is put in that counts as your backup playing a game.

i never pulled out my starting goalie, because i never played a game that requires me to do so. even if i put the total wins for both starting and backup goalies, it still way off. In my season #1, total win was 42, my starting states 34 wins and backup is 14, thats a total of 48!

I did not even SIM any games from my season 1 and 2. Im just guessing, the reason why you cannot see the previous games stats is because EA did not get it right.

hmmm really interested in the cpu trade logic in BeAGM mode so I wont stack my team anymore by trading away draft picks for young star caliber players.
Really interested in this Live the life mode if its anything close to what 2k has been doing I will be ecstatic

If the a.i. is still incompetent, and completes up to 80% of their attempted passes, all of their additions mean nothing to me personally. Since they are smart enough to defend a non-fighing team mate, I expect them to have the same awareness when the puck comes their direction, as opposed to watching it glide by.

Just play the game in the mode that its meant to be played in - online.
Not sure why people still bother playing the CPU as it will never feel organic that way. The tweaks to the hitting system is a very welcomed addition along with the new fighting engine. Lookin good!

The new hitting system is a very welcomed addition. However, my main concern remains about the goalies. The goalies anticipation feature they added in 13 is one of the worst thing ever, as goalies stop almost every great scoring chances, while letting weak goals going in each game.

I loathe online. I've only been online a few times but in those handful of occasions, I've heard so much swearing, trash talk, homophobic slurs, you name it.
None of my friends have this game so it's basically left to OS members. But then I need to schedule a game with them.

I'm old - nearly 40. I've been bread on offline gaming and that's how it'll be the rest of my life.
NHL2K3 had unbelievable AI. Every game felt different and organic. If that could be done on a PS2, then why can't it be done on a 360 or PS3? And certainly on the next-gen boxes.

If EA's solution to crappy AI is 'play online' then they can say goodbye to my annual $60 donation to bug-test their games.
