NCAA Football 14 News Post

XXL has posted an interview with NCAA Football 14 Producer, Ben Haumiller.

What kind of changes was made to improve the running game?

BH: As mentioned before, the Infinity Engine 2 goes a long way to improving realism and eliminating legacy issues like the swerve. We’ve also added a ball carrier avoidance animation which will let running backs and scrambling QBs avoid offensive linemen who are engaged in blocks. Since you don’t have to worry about tripping over your own man you can focus more on finding the hole and shedding defenders. The addition of the Infinity Engine 2 and the Force Impact system were huge upgrades for the running game, but those improvements would have fallen flat if there were not also big upgrades made to run blocking. A new targeting system has been implemented which will prevent guys from peeling off at the last second to go after a linebacker that has no impact on the play rather than blocking the safety that’s closing in on the ballcarrier. Additionally each running play has had their blocking assignments updated vs. each front so that the linemen are targeting the correct players at the snap.

There have been improvements made to the CPU ballcarriers as well so that they are more intelligent in their actions. In the past it was not difficult to shut down the CPU’s running game, but this year be prepared to give up some yards if you are not focused on shutting down their attack.

My favorite improvement for the running game though is the upgrades to the option game. Not only did the blocking overhaul help tremendously with running the option, but the entire option system has been overhauled and is an absolute blast to run. There are over 30 new option types including midline options and the shovel option. If you are a fan of Oregon’s up tempo spread option attack or if you want to go old school with an old Wishbone attack the option is where it’s at in this year’s game.

Shouldn't it be XXXXXL Interview with Ben Haumiller?

My bad.

The one with /2/ is just the second page of the interview

Ah I see on my cell the m. extension was consolidating everything to one page.

There have been a number of changes made to defenders from adjustments in coverage, to better pursuit angles, to adjustments in ratings that will help defenders cover better in NCAA 14.
These two are what really matter to me from that article. I can deal with a lot of the other issues pretty well, but I really hope that these areas are finally on point.

Traditionally, people have shied away from using power backs in NCAA Football as it always seemed to be more advantageous to use a speed back. Will the Force Impact System make using a bruising runner a more fruitful experience?

All I ask is that when you get the game in your hands, find a big back, call a stretch play from I-Form, watch the fullback blow up the linebacker on the lead block and then get into the open field where there’s just a safety by himself. As you are coming up to him either give him the stiff arm or truck him. There are few things in the game more rewarding then watching what happens to that safety when you successfully stiff arm them into the ground or decleat them on a truck stick. On the other hand though, with the new Acceleration Burst mechanic it’s also a lot of fun to take a little back, find that crease and explode through the hole for a big gain too.
Sounds like the only difference between a power back and a scat back is those (mostly unrealistic) decleating trucks. Sad that this is their idea of power running.

I'm loving this part:

Additionally, we have gone out and signed some of the greatest players in college football history as well as a group of players that were phenoms in college but might not have gone to the same level of success in the pros. These Campus Heroes are guys that are very recognizable names to college football fans, and will be guys that we feel fans will be very excited to see as a part of the Ultimate Team.
I'm one of those who couldn't care less about Ultimate Team stuff, but if it means I can play with someone like Tommie Frazier, I'd play.

Thanks for posting this.

Good to hear that they've worked on improving the AI on the running game.....it will make for a much better game as it's been too easy for far too long to stop the computer's run game.

Overall I think they've done well with this game.......but the proof will be in the actual results when the game drops.

Ben can say what ever he wants, I have to see it to believe it. He been spouting improved CPU running and improved CPU option since NCAA 10. Say it every year, same thing with improved zone coverage. 4th year in a row they been improving it.

I just hope they don't mess up something with their patches, like they seem to do every year. Yeah I am still ticked off they messed up my sexy CPU QB scramble logic. Before patches, QB scrambled with a purpose trying to score a TD. After patches, they went brain dead and just ran directly into defenders.

And they never did fix screen plays last year. That was an instant sack every time the CPU ran it. One of these years I hope they over haul special teams and coach mode. Coach mode has gotten the team builder treatment. They put it in but never work on it again. And special teams is just awful, which is sad considering it is a huge part of football.

I am intrigued by this half time show. Don't see how they couldn't add a post game show when it is essentially the same thing as halftime show. Also I really do hope there is more of a difference between a power back and a speed back other then decleating a defender.

I loathe Ben Hamburgler. He seems like a moron and simply because he had some say in overrating FSU in this game on a yearly basis.

I find it odd that he didn't talk about foot planting locomotion during run improvement portion. That was one of the main thing in the 1st playbook

I have a difficult time believing anything that comes out of this guy's mouth when it comes to NCAA football. not after him laughing in an interview at those who found a big issue NCAA 12 shortly after its release. I've lost all respect for this guy...

Prove it!

You can think what you want about Ben Haumiller, but there will be no more jokes about his name and weight.

It is against the TOS to insult developers here, just like any other member. And he is a member here as well.

This is the only warning.

Seems like alright guy, I just hate how his FSU homerism runs at 110% all the time.

Maybe it's a good thing though

I agree, all we can hope to see is E3. I just think it's a joke when something as blatant as the DB Glitch doesn't even get addressed. I just feel like it's going to rear its ugly head again in 14....

Still waiting for game play videos.

Ok I'm about like everyone else. I got to see it to believe it. I've just been let down to much over the past few years by NCAA football. I'm just now in a wait and see mode at this point until E3 gets here. I have reserve NCAA14. But I really want to see some improvement in the run and pass blocking for me to be happy and get the game. I just hope the NCAA Dev. team finally comes through this year.
