MLB 13 The Show News Post

Bryce Harper has been announced as the first candidate for the MLB 13 The Show cover, which will be voted on by fans.

In this Kotaku article, Bryce talks about the possibility of being the MLB 13 The Show cover athlete. Ramone Russell and Owen Good give us a few more details about the game, including a few nuggets about Beginner Mode, fielding, hit timing and a complex formula in the game's franchise mode.

Quote:
Russell said hitting timing will be adjusted slightly in MLB 13 The Show to give batters a more satisfying payoff on solid contact. "You're going to see more offense like you do in real life," he said, addressing criticisms that The Show's rigorous contact physics last year made the game a station-to-station game of base hits for most novices. "If you square up on a fastball, it's going to be hit harder than it was before," Russell added. "People are going to be very surprised."

Other upgrades Russell described involved a complex formula in the game's franchise mode, whereby team payroll—i.e., management's willingness to spend—will expand or contract relative to the team's success, and not just because a team made the playoffs or won a World Series. Teams like the Padres will never spend like teams like the Yankees, and vice versa. But especially in Road to the Show, if you end up in a small market or a perennial loser, and take them to a breakout season, you have a reasonable hope of seeing management spend for a supporting cast to get your club further into October, without stranding you there until you become an unrestricted free agent.

Well, now I can't play MLB 12 at all now, I just tried, and it just wasn't the same! Lol, no big deal, worth hearing the details. Thanks Russell! I hope McCutchen is a candidate! Would you guys vote for him if he was?

And I am really new to Operation Sports, just joined, about 15 minutes ago. Just trying to figure everything out. Didn't know you could do as much as you can.

If we allowed users to change potentials there would be more than a few nasty side effects right now. The most important one is player contracts are largely determined by a players overall and if you started editing guys and making some extra A rated players 5 years down the line there will be some problems with budgets and highly rated players not being signed by teams.
I understand all the constraints in the gaming engine, numbers of A-B-C-D and numbers of Pitchers and Position players etc, but a solution would be to let roster making do whatever they want and do the validation of the roster before saving or even using it in Franchise mode. Or maybe having a feature where roster makers can save a working copy with no validation but where you can only upload it once it's validated for numbers A-B-C-Ds and position wise.

That way both sides would be happy I think ( except the dev who'll have to code it :-)

I like how we went from talking about Bryce Harper (whom I think should not be on the cover) to the new features and such. I'm excited about RttS. Perhaps now I won't be just biding my time til my player reaches FA.

Great to hear that on the timing window as modes above all star were getting ludicrous.

I'll just take it grass is for PS4 but if you guys could somehow squeeze in some color matching at least for stadiums like Toronto I would probably do whatever you wanted.

Previously in the show you would set all those prices for hot dogs, bobble heads, etc... have 100 million in funds that you couldn't spend on player personnel decisions. It was kind of pointless and we needed the memory for the core a.i. rewrites that were done this year for the season modes.
I've been wanting something like this for years. I just want to run my baseball team, I always hired the AI to be my business operations manager.

This is awesome news!!

Just from seeing how SCEA operates....I can tell you that the franchise mode "overhaul" will be in stages.

First....there was no way they would rip everything apart and go whole hog in one fell swoop.
This is a good thing though IMO. It allows us more input from year to year to recommend and request features to help shape the franchise mode. AaronSCEA and LuisSCEA(and NickSCEA, who has some really great ideas as well) have an excellent vision for how they would like franchise mode to run.

Secondly....even this first phase of changes .....is open for fine tuning from what I gather from the devs....which I think is because it's not all done at once and it gives a better chance for the team to see what works and what needs adjusting a little easier.(rather than having to deal with EVERYTHING at once).

Finally.....It's good to see the passion that the community has for the game and thankfully, the dev team sees it to and listens to us!

Will players still retire mid contract?

Working on it.
I'm pretty sure they can code it not to happen....and if they do, using the FA3 swap bug will ensure that users can keep the guys they want to see from retiring...from retiring.

Sounds to be a good midway solution to me

One issue I had with MLB 12 was the trade logic, is that something that is being addressed so we won't see massively lopsided trades (e.g. 3 'A' prospects for a 'C' rated 31 year old utility player)? I had to use 30-team control and it made simming multiple seasons a real chore as you had to constantly check trade offers to make sure they were somewhat realistic.

Nothing will ever be perfect but last year was atrocious in my honest opinion.

Like you said it will never be perfect because as humans we put emotion into decisions and go by hunches and data. The CPU sees attributes, salary, age and potential, factored by team needs.

Every year they tweak it. I know my biggest pet peeve is the trade of one position for the same position. A team in a playoff push will trade a good young player for one with similar attributes, but older at the same position. That is one thing that I would like see changed. The team that has that good younger player would try to upgrade somewhere else instead of a lateral move.

You mean less atrocious like the latest D-Backs/Reds/Indians trade?!

After seeing the trades that have gone down in baseball the last 4 months I will never think of another trade in the game as being "unrealistic"

Any chance we get a coach/scout editor this year?

I hope with what sounds like extra emphasis on scouts and coaches this year, that this is in.

I'm pretty sure that I have read this in the past Knight, but aren't you a fan of the GM getting fired/having goals to meet? I was just curious if this is something that we might see the team implemented again in the future. I always liked having that variable in the game.
