Its such a shame that there is always something there that takes away the longevity to their games whether its AI not enough separation from players, teams and styles.
If you break down both games on a whole they are brilliant pieces of work the control is second to none in both.
The stuff in the NHL game is mind boggling, broken sticks, goal reviews, chop puck, incredible features and it all gets glossed over by many people because of some niggly thing with their games.
They should seriously look at some of this stuff and complaints as their games could get more credit than they even do now.

Ive relaxed on the annoying things and tried to focus on the enjoyment of the whole package, thats easier to do with NHL than Fifa right now.

Id say both products are top notch and deserve anyones money when you break them down.
I agree to an extent. The NHL series has come A LONG WAYS over the years and honestly is probably the deepest NHL game ever for console. HOWEVER, the nagging issues do wear thin on ya after so many years. Epsecially when it's something like penalties, which were once done to perfection almost and now for two years straight been poor. The AI is something that I've grown use to and can live with. At least this year, there is a noticable improvement in that area.

I agree Savoie. I did take a year off from NHL for 12 and the same for fifa in 10. it does a world of good.

100% agreed guys. Savoie as you said they had everything perfect back in 11 and the previous iterations as far as penalties, offsides, and the overall flow of the game. All they truly needed to do was add what they just added for NHL 13 to NHL 11 and bam we would have a great hockey game. To me NHL 12 and so far with my time playing 13, are steps backward from NHL 11. This stuff we are talking about is what makes the NHL, the NHL. I just don't understand how one year with NHL 11 we had penalties, offsides, and things you see every game done extremely well. Then for 12 it all disappeared. It's a mystery to me. I'm wondering what they did with the gameplay to make it play out this way. I really just can't describe how frustrating it is.

Another point I want to add is that penalties and offsides are things that people want in a game whether you're casual or not. Hell if you don't want that stuff you just turn it off in the settings. That to me is why offsides and penalties barely being in the game is inexcusable. I remember back in 10 and 11 players were pretty dumb going offsides, but honestly I would take dumb AI offsides rather than barely having any right now.

Why do even bother playing these games?

Goh, you can fix the stuttering issues by making a custom camera that crops out the crowd from the image.

When a lot of the crowd is on-screen, that's what causes the stutter.

If you zoom the camera in tight enough, the crowd won't ever appear on-screen and the game will run smoothly.

k. maybe it's just me. but i've watched a bunch of videos of cpu-cpu / cpu-human, and there have been penalties called?

i'll take 1-2 PP/PK in a 5 minute period game any days. too many and the games drag on and on.

In EASHL games interference is non existint, hooking is never called, clear penalty shots are just penalties

Man I can't wait to get a go with the retail version. For me, after playing the demo heaps and reading all these impressions I am expecting lots of same old issues but with the addition of much improved skating. I can't wait for my copy.

It does get tedious offline when all teams play the same. Its just like playing the one.team over and over alternating their jerseys each time.

Again, really looking forward to getting mine. The skating engine at least brings something well worth it, plus the true broadcast cam and the lighting.

That's the difference between a casual hockey gamer like yourself and someone like me who wants a better replication of the sport. I'm seeing 1-2 penalties total in 10 minute games. For someone who wants a good replication of the sport I want something close to 3-4 per team which is the around the league average. Some games having more and some less because that's hockey. Games are normally won based off who has the better special teams, not in NHL 12 or 13. Overall they just need to find a way to make the slider more effective. The amount of penalties seen in the game now should honestly be the first tick on the penalty slider.

not a casual gamer by any means, but i do like to *try* and play all 82 games + playoffs. i have more beef with lack of injuries that occur, but at least the slider works for that.

i get what you mean about the slider actually having a purpose and i agree 100%.

if you're looking for a better representation of the sport just play as the canucks, the refs dont like to give them PP's

I keep trying to play online and I find it to be very slow. The skating is definitely turned down and lots of loose pucks just sit there while people skate around it. Lack of control.

I played my first game and won 8-0 online and since I have played 4 games and scored 1 goal. Brutal. I feel like a rookie.

By casual I'm not meaning that you play the game on occasion. I didn't really say that correctly. I'm more saying that it seems like you don't necessarily care if certain aspects in the game such as penalties actually match up to the way they are called in the real NHL.

i do care. but, maybe because playing the CPU in previous games always felt like playing the same team over and over and over again, i accepted defeat. im just saying that with the videos posted, id take 2 over 0 any days.

The game should be able to serve both type of players since there are sliders but because they don't work it isn't possible right now. I can see how you might want to play that way but for people like myself who want it to be realistic, 2 penalties per game won't cut it. Power plays are a critical element of hockey and for ea not to model reasonably correctly and make the sliders work is an oversight on their part. If sliders worked you could turn it down while other people could turn up to be real.

Definitely see a cpu boost (All Star / Hardcore - with some tweaks). I'd like to consider the lower level this year, as I made some sliders a couple years ago for Pro that played well. This game might actually play best on that level, giving the cpu proper boosts. Not sure though...
I haven't played retail yet...
But like you said, I've also made my sliders earlier based on Pro.
Just because said reason, on higher levels the CPU gets certain boosts that I don't like.
I can usually set some sliders in a way that makes Pro challenging enough... Unfortunately though, a few months into playing Pro and you start to learn the tapes, it gets harder and harder to adjust Pro to be challenging enough.

But anyway, I'd like to mention to anyone that has issues with boosts for the CPU to try and start at Pro level, with certain sliders to make it harder, as I believe that Pro is the "neutral" CPU level, without boosts.

Can't wait until Friday... EU release date.

Some weird stuff is going on with simulated injuries in the offline Be A Pro mode.

I'm seeing 3 to 4 CPU goalies getting injured each week, and most of them are short-term injuries.

I'm 20 games into the season and no other position in the league is getting injured, just this bizarre rash of goalie injuries for the CPU teams.

Just got my first game in, quick game NYR (me) NJD (CPU) Superstar Hardcore 8 minutes with penalty slider maxed on 360:

-Intros look the same as last year, with a different little theme song before they cut to the arena

-There were times when Gaborik was able to just blow by defenders cause i caught them flat footed, without even needing the hustle button to do so which was nice to see

-Jeff Halpern is wearing #11 in the roster update which is a retired NYR number

-CPU seems tamer on superstar/hardcore than previous years. Last year if I played SS HC, there would be times when the CPU would pull off some nasty one timer goals unless i spent my whole time focusing on taking that away. Seemed more varied and realistic in their attack this time but could be the Devils strategy settings too if teams actually play differently from each other.

-Scored on a wraparound with Callahan where i shot back to the short side, but Brodeur did this weird sort of flopping-butterfly move which slid him almost halfway out of the net on the far side leaving the net wide open. Hope this was just a flukey thing.

-Saw a few too many times where i could just skate the puck all the way up with one of my d-men from behind my own net and weave around defenders all the way up to the opposing slot and take a shot, no dekes or fancy tricks required just skating with the L stick. This may just be due to the Devils strategy settings or something, but it was somewhat concerning.

-Wound up with 3 PPs to the CPUs 2, they scored on both of theirs. Both of my penalties came from my CPU teammates

-Had a couple instances where Lundqvist had the puck covered and one of the CPU players just barrelled into him with no penalty called. Hopefully this doesn't cause the puck to come loose in some situations otherwise this could be easily abused on online play.

Been playing it since Friday night and I am enjoying it. There are penalty issues......especially goalie inteference not ever being called.....but overall, I like the game. Definitely different but I am starting to get used to the new skating physics. The one problem that I hate is that they pretty much made cross creasing impossible. You make great passes and move the puck to get a great shot and the goalie always make an impossible save......................then all I have to do is take the puck up the ice and go up on the right stick short side and seem to have a 80% success in scoring. I will say that I am really enjoying the Connected Career mode.+

Remember I was having trouble adjusting to the game since I skipped out on NHL 12 basically? I was getting my backside handed to me by the CPU on Pro.

Well I went in and adjusted a couple things. I took the CPU AI Learning Slider down 2 clicks from full and I think this has made the most difference for me. I like the idea of CPU AI Learning but I think having it learn from everything I do was making it way to hard for me to adjust.

I'm still not able to get off a reasonable amount of shots. I won a game 4-2 Rangers (me) vs. Sens but I was outshot like 22-7 or something like that. And faceoffs even though I reduced the difficultly slider (to the left) I still am not very good.

So he can complain about how "trash" the game is. There are issues with this title, however they are no where near as bad as he claims. I'm seeing 3 to 6 penalties a game. I have never seen a player go through the boards. That being said, I'm not looking at replays to look for visal problems.
