NBA 2K13: Top Ten Rookies and their Projected Signature Skills

When I pop NBA 2K13 into my XBOX 360 come October 2nd, one of the first things I’ll do is what I do every year, go to practice mode and check out the new rookies. In another life, I’d be an NBA scout. I’ve always enjoyed watching players progress from high school to college and analyzing what type of player they might be in the NBA. In the game, it’s fun for me to see how well rookies are captured appearance, ability and style-wise. And with the announcement of perhaps my most anticipated addition to NBA 2K13, Signature Skills, it will be even more interesting this year.

Rookies in NBA 2K have always been rated according to a specific scale which often does not do justice to their capabilities on the court. Granted a part of rating them is predicting how well their game will translate to the NBA, there are certain abilities that players just possess. Signature Skills could be the compromise which allows rookies to play like their real life counterparts though they may be rated conservatively.

The 2012 draft was deep with good ballplayers and there a couple of guys I’m excited about using in NBA 2K13. Here are my numbers ten through six most anticipated rookies, along with what I predict their Signature Skills might be.

No love at all for Royce White? The guy who has the size of Karl Malone but passes like Magic Johnson? I think he will have a passer skill and maybe a floor general (idk if they would give it to a rookie though), probably a rebounder skill as well. I see him being somewhere between a prime Boris Diaw and a up and coming LeBron, IF he plays to his skillset.

They made it to the NBA so wouldn't they have some skill? Maybe i'm looking at it wrong but it seems crazy that these rookies are drafted on potential and skills but when they are in the NBA they shouldn't have "skills" Davis has shown that he is a shot blocker, Kendall has shown that he is a good passer, Rivers has shown that he has handles... If a player has shown through college or through the Summer League that they have a certain skill I have no problem with them having at least one.

I thought signature skills were above all to differentiate much better superstars from just good players... Some rookies perhaps may become superstars but they have to prove it before and usually it takes some time...

We dont know yet how signature skills will work, so we have to wait and see, but in any case I would understand if Davis has some defensive skills, but not much more than that.

First of all it isn't based on potential, it is based on current production.

Well being in the NBA isn't what gives you the skill. Being Elite in a category gives you that. Not having NBA Experience shows what about a player being exceptional at any skill vs. NBA COmpetition? You can't make any claims for that they deserve anything because they have yet to prove anything.

The skills I mentioned above are physical and will translate over no matter what. Skill based Skill Perks need to be earned. So yes I feel you are looking at it the wrong way.

I really don't see why people have an issue with people earning things because getting labels.

Knowing 2K's track record I think it is safe to say that some skills will be handed out like hot cakes.

And to dude that said Royce passes like Magic, he must be Royce's son talking like that.

Certain athletic skills will transfer. Shooting doesn't always transfer because it is tougher to get a shot off in the NBA vs college or some international player league

Alley ooper Davis
Swat team/blockers Davis
Dunker Davis
Dimer. Marshall can't give him a floor general because he has to prove that he can run a team maybe end of the year he can earn floor general

Lilliard get hot quick, acrobat, Dimer by the end of the year he will probably have floor general. I think he will be ROY.
Rivers, ankle breaker, streaky shooter
Robinson, post strength
Kidd-gilchrist he will get one Sig skill on defense
Valanciunas Swat team

Ooh, yeah, Alley Oop definitely needs to be a signature skill. A dunk rating doesn't really accurately represent the skill and amount of alley-oops a player has.

I think that's way overrating Davis before he's played a single NBA game, especially comparing him against last years DPOY and the center that made the difference been one and 0 rings for Dirk.

Davis should be decent defensively his rookie year, but he had trouble scoring even against smaller kids his age in college. Did everyone forget how bad offensively he was in the championship game? Yes he has a bit of a jumper and he'll probably develop a decent offensive game with time and work but it's another thing to assume he's better than Chandler in both defense and offense out the gate.

He should just have Eraser and Hustle at most. 80 is okay if defense and speed/athleticism is highly weighted in big men overalls. Otherwise 75-78 until he proves himself.
