The last man standing. Your last line of defense. With EA SPORTS Hockey I.Q., goalies in NHL 13 have been completely overhauled featuring all-new goalie anticipation and complete limb movement. Netminders will read and anticipate the play as it develops and with over 1000 new animations, are more dynamic than ever before. Goalies are now fully equipped to make that unthinkable save when the game is on the line.
Looks good. I didn't really see anything new, though. A couple of the saves made were different looking.
What caught my eye was the Full User Control. That coupled with what Rogie posted in the other goalie thread about how our control was actually limited has me rather confused. Now I'm eagerly awaiting a full scoop on user goalie controls. Looks good, though. Thanks
You look at the video and almost everything is fine with it. It's good, it's seems perfect and it's enjoyable. For someone who don't play the game often, it's kind of exactly what it's suppose to be. From my eyes, it's kind of different.
I think I got it now, comes down to what I've said to a guy at the grocery store few weeks ago : "If it's not extreme, people won't notice, so we're seeing more and more extreme things."
Exact same thing here. We're seeing spectacular gloves saves like M.A. Fleury does. We're seeing spread-leg save like Jonathan Quick does. We're seeing swipe in the back like a second baseman trying to save it from going to the outfield like all goales does 10 times per game (sorry for the sarcasm) even seeing goalies fly to the side and make a desparate save.
Who cares about goalies don't pass the puck like crazy online? Who cares about goalies not beeing able to play a puck without taking a penalty? Who cares about a goalie having trouble stopping a puck that bounce off the corner and get back to the net?
You know what EA, I guess you guys should have taken a look at the best goalie in the league this year, Henrik Lundqvist. Nothing is spectacular, everything is controlled, square and simple.
This video has both positive and negatives, grant it it's a trailer. The diving saves are absolutely absurd if they are going to happen all the time. All this trailer does is show what a goalie shouldn't be doing all game. Sure they make desperation saves from time to time, but if I see Lundqvist, Rinne, and some of the other huge cool, calm, and controlled goalies diving across the net all the time I'm going to be absolutely furious. If I see this in the gameplay videos or the demo I'm not purchasing it unless there will be a patch addresses the goalies. Goalies are the most important part of the game to me if you can't tell.
The good however is it looks like goalies are actually going to catch pucks cleanly off tips and it also looks like they are going to try and put rebounds in the corner or out of play. It did make the goalies look much better in that department, but the excessive flopping will overshadow that if that is how the goalies play. Differentiation in goalies is all I ask.
Also FBeaule I fully agree on all of the stuff you mentioned. Those things absolutely hampered NHL 12 and there has not been mention of them being fixed. Hopefully that will be mentioned when we receive the rest of the information on the game in the coming weeks.
You know Rogie, I haven't heard even a tidbit of information regarding goalie control in NHL 13 yet. So, I'm gonna take what's stated in the trailer with a grain of salt. Until the devs release an insight on goaltending, it's probably best not to be so pesimistic...
The fact that you're saying manual saves are gone and we'll have less control over goalies baffles me, especially since this trailer states otherwise. I think it's more likely that we have the exact same amount of controls that we did last year for manually controlling goalies (based upon past EA history), since BAPro wasn't a focus this year. I think saves'll be more dynamic, and instead of animations, we'll be able to move all four of our limbs naturally; pardon my optimism.
I'm not sure how much I actually am excited about this. My issues with goalies to this point have been mostly about the lack of differentiation. I could play as the West All Stars and be continually robbed by an OHL goalie, who plays just as well as the NHL's elite.
Every goalie is still in that same awkward slumped stance with their glove resting on their pad?
Not one goalie in the NHL challenges a shooter in that stance nor does any goalie stand exactly like one another, yet every goalie in this game does. Makes sense.
Good to see the artwork on the helmets hasn't changed. Never get tired of seeing a two-toned team color helmet.
I know the artists hold the rights to the actual artwork on the masks, but seriously, these are the same helmets since 07. How difficult is it to come up with your own creations? People were creating custom artwork for goalie helmets in the PC versions 5 years ago, you guys can't do the same?
Absolutely no physics in regards to their skating or movement in/out of the butterfly either.
Apart from goalies, why are players taking wrist shots? Who the hell in the NHL takes a wrist shot? Who over the age of 12 takes a wrist shot? Why is that even an animation in the game?
There are enough flaws in this game for me to fill up this entire page.
Traded in NHL 11 after two months, passed on NHL 12, will pass on NHL 13.
It's the same game since it made the jump to next-gen. Yeah there have been tweaks here and there, but the general feeling of the game is the exact same as NHL 07.
The entire development team needs to be replaced. Definition of complacency.
Destroy all of the coding developed for the NHL franchise and start all over because this series is just plain awful.

Honestly for the most part I agree with most of what you're saying. Not the totally ripping out the gameplay and producers or the wrist shot portion necessarily, but some of the other points about the game being the exact same. What I think needs to happen is the wrist shot needs to change in this game. In the NHL not many guys have the ability to roll back their wrist and go through this long process without the shot being blocked or the puck being taken away by the defender. The skill stick in general just needs a total revamp in order to make this game look like a hockey player would actually go about stick handling and making moves.
Certainly hoping that this game has changed for the better. I have been noticing my NHL 12 time really slumping off as of late (really only play club games anymore)
I just know when I get into an EASHL game. I know whats going to happen. Glitch Goal, Glitch Goal, Absolutely dreadful A.I., Copy.Paste.Paste.Paste.Paste./End of game.

And the nitpicker of the year award goes to... Seriously this game isn't even out yet and people are just destroying it.

I agree with some of what you mentioned, like the goalie mask artwork. But honestly, I'd rather them focus on fixing bugs than that; don't nitpick.
It's also true that most players use snapshots or slapshots versus wristers, but wristers are still used. What the devs could do is tune the engine so that snapshots are used the most versus the other two shot types.
Also, I would never go as far as saying that NHL 12 is the same as NHL 07; never. That's completely incorrect. NHL 07 was essentially an arcade hockey game compared to NHL 12. Presentation was basically nonexistant. Physics was scripted and largely unrealistic. So while NHL 12 may not look perfect, it is ludicrous to say that it's the same as NHL 07.
If it's actually true that they have perfect goalies this year as Rammer says, then all the team has to do is make those crazy flying saves much, much rarer. Emphasize good positioning and subtle movements to make saves or just plain let it through.
I want to see differentiation in goalie styles. From the cool calm guys like lundqvist to the abaolutely sprawling scorpion save guys like brodeur i wanna see some epic marty diving pokechecks in nhl 13.
This year the right stick is used to anticipate a save, allowing the human controlled goalie to prepare for a shot without committing to the save and moving out of position. If the player guesses right they are that much more likely to make the save. Guessing wrong still leaves the goalie with a chance to make a save, but they’re going to be an instant slower which could be costly.
Once committed to a save human controlled goalies will still have the ability to adjust and correct, using their individual limb control to raise a blocker or kick out a pad to make that amazing save.
The poke-check ability has also been improved for human controlled goalies in NHL 13, making it more accurate and increasing the chance that the player controlled goalie will end up with the puck.
