  • Team Systems
NHL 13 Producer Sean Ramjagsingh explains how EA Sports Hockey IQ will change the way you play the game. A completely overhauled A.I. system, players and goalies are now fully aware of every other player on the ice, resulting in quicker, smarter and more true-to-life decision-making. EA Sports Hockey IQ also delivers the deepest and most customizable set of real-world hockey systems and strategies ever for the franchise.

Very nice. Especially the goalie's awareness of the passing opportunity on the 2 on 1.

Well that solves the neutral zone problem! We finally have to think about what type of forecheck to use in certain situations. This is one major part to check off the list it seems. Also the interceptions on passes look good. Although I'm hoping that when a pass is rifled through the slot the D man or the player receiving the pass won't catch it perfectly everytime like in 12. Way too many one timers are scored because of this. It just looks unnatural. At least in 11 the slider for pass reception worked. Hopefully that will be back to normal in 13.

One minor gripe I have that has been in the game since 07 is the goalies covering the puck. On the Luongo save on the one timer he caught the puck at his hip and then went into the cover puck motion. I would like to see him hold his stance of how he caught the puck. So really when he caught the puck at his hip the whistle should have blown right away. Now if the puck would have bounced out of his glove I understand why he would go into the cover puck motion. It's just something that has always bothered me. It would be cool to see it fixed.

WOW!!!! FINALLY the neutral zone is addressed as well as my AI teammates. i hope this will translate well in the end product... So far, I like what I'm seeing.

Yea ... neutral zone play! Loved the turnover at the blue line as Kopitar tried to just skate through the defense into the offensive zone. Having to legit dump and chase the puck is long overdue in this series. I'm hoping this will lead to more scrums for the puck along the boards, but either way, this is a good start.

Wait a second, what is this? A neutral zone??????? YES! YES! YES!

Finally!!! Woohoo!!! This is great stuff. NHL 13 has really impressed me so far with what I have seen in terms of videos and information.

Now...now I'm impressed!

This vid was showing exactly what I was hoping for, for NHL '13'. Loved seeing the AI d-men standing up at their blue-line forcing a dump in. This one video has pretty much ruined '12' for me. Thanks EAC!

I can't even find words to describe this... the convergence that the Phoenix defense demonstrated on Kopitar at the blue line was simply a thing of beauty.

Ugh, these next few months are going to be grueling.

That's why I have Skyrim ...not a sports title, but should keep me plenty busy until 13 arrives at my doorstep.

I'm excited about the goalies being able to cheat. I have always wanted to be able to have a 2-on-1, and be able to fire one over the goalies shoulder instead of passing it off for the one timer. Such a goal is pretty rare in 12.

Looks like we'll actually be able to read the goalie in 13 and decide whether we need to pass, or try and score short side if the goalie is cheating too much.

Can't wait to see an actual gameplay video!!!

That turn that Doan had after getting the puck looked unreal. So real life looking. That may be the first time I've ever said something about this game that involves real life in it.

I'm still waiting on these goalies though. I'm going to need a lot of gameplay footage in order to be able to tell how much they've been upgraded. I'm a huge stickler on goalies because IMO it's the most important position in a team sport. The only thing I will say is that there is really nowhere to go but up with the goalies in this game. I still wish they could implement a better movement system with the goalies instead of them warping across the crease. I'll forget about that though if they play better positionally and make more realistic looking saves.

I gotta tell RealmK...I'm still a bit in shock that the game has taken this turn for the better, much better. And much closer to the real thing. I really feared that the up and down nature of past games would be with us for quite a while yet. All in the name of fun fast paced play.

Seems maybe quite a few of us were pleasantly caught off guard by this video. Yep...I'm going to have some trouble with '12' holding my interest at this point.

NOW.. that last part of this video is very encouraging! Should make for a different experience depending on whom you're playing. Nice!

This could finally give us sloppy games.. where dump and chase and fore checking can make a real difference instead of skating in a waiting on a one timer.. very nice. Trying to get a line change to get that exhausted line off the ice, but you can't because you are being overworked on the boards.

The best AI ever seen in a hockey game!!!
Asking for trouble with that one .

Do you think those vids are in a practice session?
It looks like a dodge ball game and you cant cross the line.

Once they get to the defense it looks good but i hope with the systems they have the AI doesnt retreat into a high school basketball half court press.

The one example of the D man now picking off the pass to the far side winger and it sticks to his stick i hate how the forward who passed immediately backs off he doesnt follow his pass or try and make contact with the defense men.

Should be interesting when we get the demo.

Yep Mizz, by the looks of this video...having to change up your playing style according to who your facing, looks darn promising. I'm really looking forward to pretty much having to dump and chase, rail the puck along the boards, etc...vs the just skating in like ya own the place.

It seems like there's a decent chance now, that each game you play has the possibility of having a different feel to it. Something imo, NHL has sorely needed.

Sorry. Not sold yet. It's nice that EA has given us this produced, promotional video to salivate over, but is it possible that this extra awareness will simply open up new exploits?

In the Luongo comparison, the 2 on 1 defender was playing the puck carrier (not usually the best technique) and didn't react at all to the pass at the slot.

In the second comparson, the right defense who slid across to inercept the pass did play better, more aware, but with his back turned to the potential shooter, when he broke to intercept the pass is the most important part. It does look good though.

The team system video is, however, a great example of game design done right. It appears the producers studied more game video. My only problem is that the AI players for the attacking team seemed to hang back as if they were changing, not trying to set up an offensive zone play.

A.I. stepping UP at the blue line made me gasp lol!

If this vid is a close representation of how the final product is going to play...I kinda can't help but wonder how well this gameplay change will go over, to the more pick-up and play hockey gamer.

Meaning...will there be several complaints that the fast paced up and down shoot the puck style of play, has been replaced with [hopefully] a more realistic style? Because imo anyway...this video seems to be showing quite a change from past NHL games.

I guess I'm just being a worrywart that this change in gameplay may get a negative response from the more casual majority. Hopefully not.
