NBA 2K12 News Post

2K Sports has just posted their first NBA 2K12 Developer Insight of the year, as they go over the marketing and community efforts they have planned. New screenshots have been included!

It’s my favorite time of year, as we’re now just 53 days away from launch and, like many of you, this time of year feels like the holidays. We’re going to be BIG this year with constant NBA 2K12 news from here until launch so be sure to stay up-to-date on all the hot new stuff we’re bringing to you this year.

I remember that, over the course of the spring, I would get the two questions time and time again: 1) how does NBA 2K12 outdo Michael Jordan as cover athlete and 2) how does it follow-up on it’s critical acclaim in terms of gameplay? Both questions have been on everyone’s mind since the success of last year’s game, which saw us sell more than 5 million copies and win 20 “Sports Game of the Year” awards from various publications. And they’re fair, because 2K11 was undoubtedly the best basketball game ever released in the eyes of this (maybe somewhat biased) observer.

Firstly, let me address the cover. We could only follow up “His Airness” one way -by doing it even bigger and better than anything before. So we’ve not only brought back MJ for NBA 2K12, but we’re also inviting a couple of his friends: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, who will appear on their own covers at launch. What better way to ring in the all-new “NBA’s Greatest Mode” than with three of the best players to ever lace them up?

Jordan, Magic and Bird (along with Julius “Dr. J” Erving and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) are just five of the 15 NBA legends we’re bringing into the mix for the all-new “NBA’s Greatest Mode.” Who will be the other 10? We’re letting you sounds guys sound off and as usual, the feedback from our community has been amazing. More than 200,000 votes have been cast on Facebook, resulting in the current top 15 (Bryant, James and Wade excluded):

1. Shaquille O’Neal – 12.1%
2. Allen Iverson – 9.4%
3. Wilt Chamberlain – 8.4%
4. Reggie Miller – 7%
5. Hakeem Olajuwon – 6.2%
6. Charles Barkley – 6%
7. Bill Russell – 5.1%
8. Dominique Wilkins – 4%
9. Oscar Robertson – 3.5%
10. Karl Malone – 2.5%
11. John Stockton – 2%
12. Jerry West – 1.6%
13. Scottie Pippen – 1.6%
14. Patrick Ewing – 1.4%
15. Isiah Thomas – 1.2%

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of community involvement over the next two months. We’ve created a skeleton list of the 15 players and rivalries to be featured in NBA’s Greatest. But we’ve been interested in your feedback. Is there a particular game or player you want to relive in NBA 2K12? You’ll finally get the chance to do so come Oct 4.

The next question is how we improve on our unprecedented gameplay. Our momentum from NBA 2K11 has definitely carried over into this year’s launch cycle, and that was very apparent when we showed up to E3. We were a focal point at Sony’s show and with a little help from five-time NBA champion Kobe Bryant, our brand was able to gain some huge attention. When the dust had settled at E3, we had picked up eight “Sports Game of the Year” nominations. As you remember, I was at E3 and it became apparent that we’re bigger than ever when we coaxed those awards despite only showing a five minute demo behind closed doors.

So far, the news of our cover and the “NBA’s Greatest” Mode has set off waves in the industry. But OBVIOSULY, the largest part of the game is the 2011-2012 NBA season and players and all the gameplay features that you have come to expect of us. But if last year proved anything, NBA fans care very much about the history of the game, and how it’s influenced the present-day game. We want to pay attention to that and we want people to compare the generations, players and teams and decide once and for all who’s better. I thank Scottie Pippen for that when he debated whether LeBron was better than Michael around the NBA Finals. I saw that blow up Twitter that week. Why not let that debate live on? Having said all that, I felt like it was a good idea to leak a couple screenshots of current players to the loyal readers of our Developer Insights…

And just to give you guys an exclusive heads up: The complete roster for NBA’s Greatest and a greater breakdown on the mode will be revealed next Friday, August 19th. My main man Erick Boenisch, or as you know him SimBaller, will be dropping a Developer Insight on the subject. But the news won’t stop there, as we’ll be releasing new Developer Insights at least once a week (Monday, Wednesday, and/or Friday… at least a dozen total) and news constantly over the next eight weeks leading up to launch. As always, you can expect Insights about Gameplay, My Player, and Online along with other unannounced features. I hope you’re as excited for October 4 as I am. As I said, it’s my favorite time of year.

Guys keep in mind that the list is from the facebook vote, not an official list of guys included. While we can infer or say for sure that guys like Hakeem and Nique are in based off previous screen shots, and Pippen is in based off him being on all of Jordan's great teams. Shaq I would also assume is in based the 02 Kings being available with pre-order. Stockton, Malone, and Thomas were in 2k11 so I can't see them being removed(or at least I hope not). Of the 8 guys we'll have to wait and see till the next insight.

http://valleyofthesuns.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Charles-Barkley-Michael-Jordan.jpg

If Barkely was 6'4'', the MJ was 6'4'....just sayiing (BTW can someone tell me how to post pictures in these posts without it just being a link).

For the Chuckster to only be at 6% is kind of baffling because who is voting for Wilt over Barkley? I'd love to play with a Wilt led team don't get me wrong, but Charles IMO is a better choice over Wilt right? Aside from MJ, Charles would be the 2nd most wanted player in the game especially during these times with how the game plays today (Reggie Miller would be 3rd on that list). Barkley has to be in this game, I mean it's only right. Had it not been for Timmeh, he would still be considered the greatest PF EVER TO PLAY.

Now the screen shots look good. Love the sock OVER the long leg sleeve, hate the fact that jameer nelson looks like himself in nba2k6. The Adidas arm sleeves are very welcome. As far as sneakers go, I know that will change closer to launch or whenever the art person who does sneakers gets around to it. My only hope and wish is that they have been given the ability add as many shoes as this basketball season will release. Also, besides MJ's shoe collection and Dr. J Rockin the chucks, they have to (I'm hoping) have more classic bball kicks. I'm a sneaker guy and while probably some of you don't share this love for kicks, I do and I know I'm not the only one. So please if any one on 2K development staff reads this, I love what your doing, I can't wait for the game, but please gives us more shoes!!!! And Charles Barkley

It seems a little better, just a little, but I agree. Graphics haven't been boosted seriously since 2K9 (after the terrible graphics in 2K8). Now, you'll read some posts from guys saying: "Who cares about graphics? It looks good, and gameplay is much more important!" and: "It's the limits of this generation, they can't do anything until next gen". Seems like you an I are the minority here, so don't expect graphical boost when so many people take these graphics for granted and don't ask for more. If people wouldn't complain about glitches and gameplay problems, do you really think 2K would be where they are today gameplay-wise?

Not on everyone's list. Personally, I can't stand Chuck on TNT as a TV personality, but it'd be nice to have him in game. I have zero interest in controlling the Suns or his Sixers, and the only time I'd use him is if I had or make a '92 Dream Team.

You don't speak for everyone nor do can you determine what's "right" for 2K to implement.

And also, Karl Malone > Charles Barkley IMO.

Finally someone who understands me.

As for the rest of what you've wrote, it's a matter of opinion. I'd love to have the 1993 Suns. I actually remember seeing Dumas back in the early 90's before returning to the NBA. The guy was one of the most athletic players in Euro basketball back then and he won a couple of local dunk contests. Too bad he couldn't say no to some things...

Thats your feeling for him as a personality (and what a weird feeling to have). While I didn't state that I'm speaking for everyone, I read these posts through and through and most of em asking the very same question: Can we have Chuck?. If not for controlling him, simply because his battle against MJ was fantastic and based on the fact that he was probably the 2nd best player of that generation.

As for Malone being greater....thats your opinion fam lol. I'mma Barkley fan, dude dominated the PF position and led the league in OFF Rebs for 3 straight years!!!! At 6'6'' mind you! This wasn't the 60's or 70's where there weren't many tall players who played well, this was late 80's early 90's with guys like Robinson (7'1''), Olajuwon (7'), Parish (7'1''), Shaq (7'1''), Mutombo (7'2'') and Ewing (7') dominated the paint. So if you want to say Malone was better, I wont argue that, thats your opinion. Malone was great no doubt: Barkley was just better to me.

this is a nice little teaser...unfortuantlely it's more a of a "teaser for the teasers"...not much info here...at least now we know we'll be getting regular insights in the coming days...that's about the only real info that came of it.

i'm always more interested in gameplay improvements than cosmentic stuff and presentation...that's where you get to the real meat of how the game actually plays, which is all i really care about.

Richard Dumas! Nice reference. Loved his game, thought he was on track to be Scotty Pippen type, too bad it fell apart for him. Dont quote me 100%, but i seem to recall Jordan praising his defense, and high regard for his skills in general.

Back on topic, 2k12 pics look great!!! Keep em coming

True there. I also see on 2K Share he is the most downloaded Player DNA.

And you call my opinion weird... I don't doubt some people would agree with you, but ask any scout or coach who they'd prefer on their team from that mid 80s-90s generation and he wouldn't come up as second pick very much.

You go on to mention 7 footers who don't rebound like Barkley. Being taller has never automatically made someone a great rebounder, so I won't deny Barkley being great in that department. However, he admitted himself that he was not a great defender, and that is currently what holds a lot of players (Chuck included) back from being in that top tier category for legends IMO.

I want to see Barkley and the 93 Suns included as much as anyone, and have made my opinion about this known since 2k11 announced the Jordan mode.

But it doesn't matter if Barkley was #1 on the facebook vote if he didn't agree to have his rights included, as was the rumor last year.

Nice screens, but the legs are still too short and thick. I also hope every jersey aren't those over-sized jerseys as some players wear more form fitting jerseys like Dwight Howard and LeBron James for example.

I think it would be a lot of fun making behind the back passes, elbow passes, insane dribble moves, half court alley oops, half court bounce passes. You get the idea. It's gonna be a tough year unless you can wow gamers with nba 2k12.
I love White Chocolate, but you can't neglect this guy when talking about street ball skillz in the NBA.
