WAYNE GRETZKY, RAY BOURQUE AND CHRIS CHELIOS
SKATE INTO EA SPORTS NHL 12

NINE PAST NHL GREATS TO BE FEATURED AS LEGENDS

Electronic Arts (ERTS) announced today that it will bring nine of the greatest players in NHL history to EA SPORTS™ NHL®12. The nine NHL greats will be integrated into the game across virtually every mode, including the all-new Be A Legend Mode, adding a new and exciting dimension to the EA SPORTS NHL series. In Be A Legend, gamers will experience the glory of playing their entire Be A Pro career as one of the nine legends as they attempt to shatter the most impressive records in hockey, achieve legendary milestones and complete legends tasks.

In addition, gamers will have the ability to add legends to any team roster in Be a GM mode, or collect ultra-rare legends cards and use them within their Hockey Ultimate Team experience. In Be a Pro mode, gamers can strive to ‘Be the Next Great Legend’ as they attempt to reach legendary milestones and complete legends tasks throughout their Be A Pro character’s career. Finally, gamers can square off against the all-new Legends team, which is comprised of the nine Legends and current NHL greats, in head-to-head play – within Play Now, Online and Battle for the Cup modes – in an attempt to answer the age-old question of how players in today’s era of hockey compare to the game’s all-time greats.

Wayne Gretzky, Ray Bourque and recent U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame inductee and perennial all-star, Chris Chelios, will all be featured as Legends in NHL® 12, along with six additional former NHL greats who will be announced over the course of the next week. The NHL 12 Demo will be available for download worldwide starting August 23 on Xbox LIVE and the Playstation Network. NHL 12 hits retailers on September 9 in Europe and September 13 in North America.

Yeah... I just read the blog post in regards to this legends stuff. I hope it's good for some fans, but it's absolutely useless for me.

I assume there will be an option to NOT include them in BAGM. At least I really hope that's the case...

What a waste of resources.

I'd be pretty surprised if there wasn't an option.

I suppose anythings possible. But I gotta assume [ya I know, dangerous] that they must understand many of us wouldn't want the Legends in our GM modes. I sure wouldn't want to be forced to use them, either.

For the Be A Legend mode is it is you picking a legend like Gretzky and starting as a rookie on the Oilers and going through onto the Kings and Blues and Rangers or no? I'm confused.

Too much hype = big disappointment.

Having only 9 legends is worthless, as far as I'm concerned. They needed to have at least 40 (two teams' worth) to justify the hype.

NHL has been a great series, but I think it's hit the wall. It's maximized its capabilities on this gen's consoles and isn't going to get appreciably better or be able to add a ground-breaking feature. That's why it's so hard for EA's marketers to come up with new ideas to get you to buy basically the same game year after year.

For NHL 13, I anticipate they'll include NCAA teams as their "big, new feature.'' That's fine and dandy, but there's so little interest in college hockey that I don't anticipate it'll do much for the series.

This is very, very similar to what the NBA 2K franchise is doing. Obviously last year, they had Michael Jordan on the cover and implemented his ten greatest games, and allowed you to play those games with MJ. Now, this year, they have 15 of the greatest players ever where you can re-live their most definitaive games of their careers. Doesn't sound like you can play legendary games with these players in NHL 12, but the idea of having legends in the game is very similar to the 2K franchise.

Also, the "Be a Legend" mode is pretty much a carbon copy of the "MJ: Creating a Legend Mode" in NBA 2K11. When you beat all of the Jordan Challenges, you would unlock this mode, and you could be MJ in My Player (2K11's version of BAP), just like you can be one of those nine legends in BAP.

Overall, I'm very dissapointed in this "big annoncement" from EA. With them hyping this thing for months and months, saying it would (and I quote) "forever change the way you play the game", it certainely didn't live up to it's billing. Don't get me wrong, being able to put Gretzky on the Oilers and play with those young guys will be fun-I was just expecting maybe a little bit more from the production team.

It'll be interesting to see what "version" of the legends we get in the game. With Jordan in NBA 2K11, if you were to play MJ: Creating A Legend, he was based off of his 2nd year (still had hair back then), so while he was still rated pretty high, he also wasn't entering the league as the best player in the game; his 3-pt. shot was weak and his mid-range shot was spotty, while his dunk ratings were maxed out.
