NBA JAM: On Fire Edition News Post

New Secret Characters, Players, and Teams – Yup, we’ve got LOTS of them. In fact, I do believe we have the most teams and players that have ever been feature in an NBA JAM game. Take that Sega Genesis version! Just kiddin’, love my old school versions. Anyway, we circled back around and scooped up many of the current stars that didn’t make the cut last year, for whatever reasons, and have done a better job of evening things out for each team. We’ve also added a handful of NEW legends that were missing last year. Hopefully, you’ve already seen Dikembe Mutombo rocking the retro Nuggets jersey. He’s a MONSTER dunker and blocker by the way. And there are many more legendary Jammers in the hopper. Also, based on surveys and online telemetry data we’ve collected from players of last year’s version, we’ve noticed that there are many JAM Fans out there that are Gamers first and basketball fans second. A good chunk of the Secret players and teams we ran with last year are back and have been cleaned up, but there are a BUNCH more. We’ve added more “gamer-centric” teams and players this go around. I wish I could spill the beans on them to you guys right now but the “powers that be” have told me I have to wait. I will however, give you a hint. Let’s just say there is going to be a lot more fur flying on the court this go around. And for the “hardcore” gamers out there, you know who you are, we’ve got some of your favorite video game characters making an appearance in NBA JAM this year. Very cool stuff and we’ve even created some special dunks for some of them. Okay, I’ve probably said too much already, but just wanted to let you know that there are Players and Teams for every gamer out there, even non basketball fans.

New Player archetypes – This was a big one for us. Just as in real life, players have a role to play on the NBA JAM court based on their inherent abilities and weaknesses. Checking out your player and team stats is critical when playing competitively because you want make sure you can match up against the players your opponent is putting on the floor. From a competitive gameplay perspective, NBA JAM has always been a 2 vs. 2 fighting game. If you don’t know how to play your characters you’re just asking for a spanking. Basically, based on their real stats, we’ve assigned every player (Current Star, Legend, and Secret player) an Archetype. Those archetypes are as follows.

Point Guard

Examples: Jason Kidd, Rajon Rondo
Strengths – Speed, Passing, Mid-range shooting, Ball handling, Steals
Weaknesses – Blocks, Shoves, and Dunks

Shooting Guard

Examples: Steve Nash, Ray Allen
Strengths – Outside Shooting, Passing
Weaknesses – Dunks, Blocks, Shoves

Big Man

Examples: Dwight Howard, Shaquille O’Neil
Strengths – Blocks, Dunks, Rebounds
Weaknesses – Speed, Ball handling, Outside Shooting

Forward

Examples: Chris Bosh, Zach Randolph
Strengths – Mid-range Shooting, Shoves, Rebounds
Weaknesses – Steals, Pass, Speed

All-Rounder

Examples: Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki
Strengths – Balanced
Weaknesses – Balanced

Most are pretty self explanatory, but there are big differences in each archetype and it’s integral that you are familiar with each archetype’s strengths and weaknesses if you want to be able to roll with every team. There is also a juicy XP BONUS in NBA JAM: On Fire Edition for players that hit the “Random Team” button before entering a game. This feature was implemented to encourage people to play with ALL the teams on the roster because anyone can win with The Heat but it takes a true Jammer to pull off a W with some of the other franchises that are well…. in the process of “rebuilding.”

And lastly, we’ve been getting lots of questions about “REAL AI” and how it makes NBA JAM better. Well, I could tell you myself, but I thought it would be even better for you guys to hear it from the man that is directly responsible for it, our Lead AI Engineer, Mr. Fraser Lott. Fraze is knee deep in a tuning pass right now, but some day very soon, he will be right HERE dropping some REAL AI knowledge, exclusively on our website. Be sure to keep an eye out for it.

I am sorry; but who really cares for NBA JAm: On fire edition? If i wanted arcade style play from EA, i would search the heaven and earth for the notoriuos "NBA ELITE" and play that; or just rent NBA LIVE 10.
I know you just need to get the facts out Steve_OS, but this stuff must be giving you gut rot to research and post. A job is a job i guess.
cheers buddy.

It all sounds good so far. Looking forward to it.

The price tag doesn't hurt either.

I actually think this would be fun. Get a few friends together and have a blast. No need to bash the game though.

I apologize to Steve_OS; and anybody else i may have offened with my poor choice of words.
I didnt mean to take away anything from those who like/love the game; as i remembered videogames are FUN.
I did abuse my limited freedom on this private site, and i do regret sounding like a TROLL; but i am not that person, as i like all types of videogames.
So, once again i do sincerely, apologize to Steve_OS; for always bringing us these fantastic nuggets of excitment; and always keeping, US the readers up to date with our favourite games.

cheers

Although you didn't offend me or dull my excitement for the game - I still gotta comment on your level of maturity in making this second post. We need more of that on the internet. Good deal man.

I stopped reading as soon as I saw that Mid Range shooting is one of Rajon Rondo's strengths, because of that I will not get this game

In a game like this, what else do you expect to be a "strength" of his? It's a two on two game.

If you played the original, you would know that Rondo was not lights out from mid-range. I wouldn't worry about it that much but that is just me.

Wow, He also said secret videogame characters for the "hardcore" gamers. My only guess can be MK because they was in NBA JAM:TE. I have a good feeling this gone to be the best NBA JAM out, And being able to finally play all the NBA mascots is bringing back my childhood. Thanks for the info, I'll be a fool to pass this up.

I just really hope they make it a little faster (push needs to be the speed it used to be) and we should be able to push someone when they are shooting.Things like this made the last game difficult to have fun playing.Hopefully they do better cause NBA JAM is one of my favorite franchises ever and i would love for it to come back strong like my other fav franchise Mortal Kombat.

I think he means "teen wolf" with the fur remark for secret player. Interesting. I am looking forward to seeing this game. It sounds like its gonna be more orginal than the first, is this true ? I did not catch the price tag, anyone know the number ?

most likely as expensive as a typical high end arcade game. $15

I bought the 360 version of JAM for $40 and sold it a few months later for $30, so the steam has cooled off a little bit.

We got a raw deal, though, with them putting out all those updates for the iPhone version and never getting a single update or patch for the $50 Xbox/PS3 game.

It was a good game with the potential to be a great game if they hadn't have rushed it out for the Christmas shopping season and then just left it there unpatched and unupdated.

I'm excited to see if this game fixes some of the AI problems last year's JAM had.
