Madden 12 News Post

All right folks, here's the deal. I will be speaking with EA's Mr. Josh(full name maybe has an 'ua'?) Looman in the very near future. Many of you have interacted with him on here in the past, so he probably does not need much of an introduction, but he's the developer who likes to watch simulation after simulation run across his screen while his eyes try not to bleed too much.

Anyway, I'll be speaking with him via telephone about what's going on with Superstar Mode and Franchise Mode in Madden NFL 12 this week. The embargo won't be up until NEXT Monday (5/16). I'll be transcribing the interview for the site, but I'm going to let you all (mostly) guide where this interview goes.

Here is the only restriction (sans the given time constraints during an interview, so I obviously won't get everything answered):

No super-duper specific questions will be asked. If you want me to ask Josh if in year 2023 of Franchise mode will there be an abundance of quarterbacks available in the NFL Draft -- I WILL hunt you down.

On the other hand, here would be an acceptable question: Josh, has anything changed this year in terms of how the NFL Draft plays out in Madden 12?

(Pro tip: If your grammar is sound and on point, you probably have a better shot of getting a question asked.)

Please tell me the scouting of College Prospects has changed? There has to be a better way to focus on a position or a need then the past for each NFL team. I hope depth and detail of the scouting game has been increased. Any chance Mel Kiper will post a Mock Draft?

I like this question, definitely would like to know if Dynamic Attendance made it in.

What factors will teams consider when contracting free agents i.e. overall, past performance, scheme fit? Will some teams value players differently based on these factors?
What has been done to increase the atmosphere around the draft i.e. regular in season updates and scouting processes? Will the draft feel like a team changing event?

the main question i have is about the CBA.
If the NFL agrees on a new CBA during this version of Madden will that be something that can be patched into the game.

1. Are there as many levels of the scouting process as we saw in NFL Head Coach 09?

2. Are there still potential "grades" or potential "ratings" like in NFLHC 09?

3. How is the injury system this year? Is it more like last year or an RPG style where each body part has a certain percentage of health?

4. Can we change ticket prices and concession prices in Franchise mode this year?

5. Are there any "off the field issues" for players in Franchise mode this year?

Edible?

Anyways, my questions:

1. Are NCAA draft classes tuned better this year? We had players changing races, and the classes were seemingly random.

2. Is there more overall life to franchise mode? Does it feel like you're part of a bigger league, or like you're just playing 16 play now games like last year? Any specific presentation aspects for franchise?

3. Does coaching have a bigger influence on the game?

4. Do different schemes give different overall ratings? This is implemented well in FIFA. 3-4 and 4-3 should require different types of players.

5. Do players have personalities? Having TO on my team should have some negative consequences.

6. Are there better scouting/draft aspects this year? The draft is becoming a real event lately. I would like to see this represented in Madden.

7. Is there a new progression system? Are players still locked to their potential rating?

Franchise Mode
1. Do teams have specific identities in player personnel philosophy (draft and sign certain types of players that fit their schemes)?
ie. Raiders valuing speed above everything, Steelers go after 3-4 personnel and not just the top rated DE regardless of prototypical 3-4 DE size/strength

2. What is the news hub for franchise like? ie Stories similar to NCAA 11, Website like 2k, or Newspaper articles or radio like Madden last gen?

3. Are there updates about the college season/draft class info like in NFL HC 09?

4. Will the potential bar in rookie scouting be hidden this year?

5. How will rookie scouting be handled this year? And will the info gathered during scouting be available somewhere during the Draft?

6. Will the draft be an event or just text based with no news except the picks that have been made?

7. Is the Draft Pick Value Chart incorporated in draft pick trade logic?

8. Will it be possible to trade future draft picks? How many years into the future can draft picks be traded?

9. Will there be a Senior Bowl and/or Scouting Combine?

10. What are the factors for progression? Will coaches have a role in offseason progression? Will users be able to influence the progression by planning training or something like that?

11. Do players have cumulative fatigue over the course of a year ala HC 09?

12. Are playbooks, playcalling and personnel tendencies attached to coaches instead of teams so if Reid leaves the Eagles and they sign a run first guy as a replacement then the Eagles playbook, playcalling and personnel philosophies will also change?

13. Will the commentary stop talking about events that happened in the NFL in 2010 like it was last season even though its year 10 of my franchise? ie. No matter what year of franchise it is Collinsworth always talked about the trade of McNabb from the Eagles and Kolb stepping into the starting role.

14. Will we have any tools/sliders to be able to tune sim stats the way we want them to be?

15. Will player personalities effect franchise mode again? If we put a player on the trade block will there be some repercussions if we don't trade him ie refusal to resign etc?

16. Will low rated backup players stop asking for huge contracts to resign?

17. Will coaches progress RPG-style like in HC 09? Will they have more effect on players than they had in M11?

I could go on and on... Have a million questions and can't wait to see whats new for M12 franchise.

What is progression like this year?
Is it concrete like it has been for the past few years?
Players were assigned a potential rating and no matter what, were stuck with it. Once the ceiling had been reached there was no further progression by the player.
Is it dynamic like it was originally on the Xbox and PS2?
Potential was hidden. Players would progress based on playing time and performance. But progression could vary from franchise to franchise; my Tyrone Calico (who) example... he had been great for another team and had been averaging 800 yds as the #2 WR, and had progressed from a low 70 overall player to a low 90 player. The next franchise I acquired him because i thought he would be something special... He never even came close to the same production maxing out around a 79 overall.

Has the calculation of overall been tweaked at all?
I would like to see an overall that is more descriptive of their value in the open market, to a specific team.

1.What will be the differance between online franchise modes and offline franchise modes?

2.Will draft classes in online leagues be randomize and not preset to each year

3.Will we be able to port draft classes to online franchise leagues?

4. Will online leagues have salary caps?

5. Will the online franchise website be redone?

How will weather work this year in franchise mode? Like last year when it rained the bsame game every season no matter what.

# 72 chen_sc @ 05/09/11 07:02 PM
both questions are about franchise presentation:
1. a ticker with out of town score will be in the game?
2. is there any special presentation for postseason games?

# 73 ltzraymond @ 05/09/11 07:09 PM
Will player progression occur throughout a season, preferably after a couple or so games, and not after every season?

# 74 BSull532 @ 05/09/11 07:11 PM
Has a player's contract expectations changed to be based on his overall rating compared to other players at his position in the league? In this years game it seems like a 90 OVR player holds out for the same amount (inflation notwithstanding) in year one as he would in year 10, regardless of how he rates comparatively.

# 75 cowboysfan440 @ 05/09/11 07:16 PM
will there be so many freaks in the draft classes? theres way to many 90 speed LBs and 5'11 DTs? not that common same for short olinemen

I would love the answer to question number one from this poster. And.....

....Will we FINALLY get highlights from other games implemented into the Extra Point feature?

Will we be getting more relevant information in the game previews in Extra Point?

What we get now:

"The...."Boys visit....Philadelphia to take on the Eagles. The...."Boys are second in penaltiesPhiladelphia leads the league FGs....and 3rd string DT will be starting...."

How about:

The 6-1 Cowboys travel to Lincoln Financial Field to take on the 5-2 Eagles. The Cowboys have the number one ranked defense in the league and Philadelphia has the number one ranked offense led by early season favorite for MVP Michael Vick. It should be a great battle for first place in the NFC East between the two longtime rivals.....

I know a few other folks brought this up, but I wanted to expound:

How will progression/regression be handled this year? Please don't say that it will follow the predestined three career phase model (the Incline, Plateau, and Decline) that was in M-10'&11'.

And in regards to Potential rating, which was the only aspect of HC-09' (that I didn't like that made it's way into Madden). Will the Potential Rating be in M-12'? Will it at least be editable? Or possibly will it be a stat driven, CPU coaching staff initiated, re-evaluation (possibly on a quarterly basis)?

can you ask if there are player specific bonuses and if you can stagger the contract to either pay more upfront or later in the contract?

They took out the Extra Point this year and will redo it in the future when they are happy about it. They weren't happy with The Extra Point.

Will stats from simming an entire franchise season, or even individual games be a LOT more realistic?

EX: I simmed my first season on my Madden NFL 11 franchise, and 42 different defensive players had over 10 sacks. (No, seriously.)

EX: Currently, simulated games do not use 3rd down backs AT ALL. So you wind up see things like Reggie Bush or Darren Sproles having 0 catches the entire season.

EX: 2nd string running backs do not catch a pass the entire season if you sim every game. I guarantee you just about every 2nd string RB in the NFL caught a pass last season.

Will we be able to control/edit player progression and ratings in franchise mode?

And finally, will hiring different OC and DC in franchise mode affect the playbook for the team that hires the OC/DC?

EX: On the current Madden franchise, if you hire a new OC or DC, your teams offensive/defensive playbook will still stay the same.
