NHL 11 News Post

For the past few weeks, the talk on some of the various hockey forums has been about attributes, and whether they have any effect on our beloved OTP pros. Speed and acceleration have been the most talked about attributes, but let's not forget about the numerous goalie attributes that we have no real info on.

Speed

When the first discussions about the speed attribute started, I was slightly skeptical when people would talk about how the most expensive attribute in the game was not worth upgrading. As someone who mostly plays defense for my EASHL club, I have never put much stock in speed because I play positional defense and rarely have to skate hard in any situation, but it still sounded wrong. Nevertheless, I boosted my 65 speed to see if I felt any difference.

A couple of OTP games later I was writing an email to the rest of my club to say, "remove the points you spent on speed and put them in balance and strength for a more balanced player; you won't regret it." If you only play OTP and cherry pick a lot, you might need an increase to 90 speed. But if you play as a team and move the puck by passing, you won't notice a difference.

I've got back to NHL 11 lately.

I was playing with a 2-Way D and had a good mix up with speed ratings and balance-strenght.

By accident, I found a player build online for a Defensive D. I tried it and couldn't believe what I saw.

My guy as no offensive skills whatsoever. He only have 91 passing, 90 puck control and 99 slap shot power. Did I suffer offensively? Not at all! In fact, I'm racking up more points than before.

On the other end, defensively, the guy is a beast. I'm 99 in those categories : Body Checking, Discipline, Def. Awareness, Stick checking, Shot blocking, Strenght and balance. Anyone who come toward me with the puck and I touch will lose it 9 times out of 10. My guy won't go down most of the time and will be sounded in front of the net.

On the speed ratings, I'm 75 speed, 78 agility and 77 acceleration. I'm slower than most guys, but overall, I stay at my position, don't rush with the puck and don't pinch too much.

The hitting in this game is so important. I've seen proof of teams beeing intimidated by the physical play. If it's not for the passing or shooting that's way off, the guy will circle before entering the zone to not end on their back.

I won't go back to the 2-way D ;-)

My theory on shot accuracy:

You don't need any if you have 90+ offensive awareness.

Reason being, offensive awareness adds a bit of "auto-aim" to your shot.

So instead of spending all those points in an expensive category like shooting accuracy, just spend them in the inexpensive offensive awareness category.

I roll with this for my tough guy center:

Quote:
mid curve

92 offensive awareness (+8)
54 slap shot accuracy
98 slap shot power (+5)
I am 6'5" 225 pounds, and I shoot fine like that.

Wrist shot accuracy is 50, too.

ive always thought like that with offensive awareness.. helps your accuracy and passing and its cheaper than accuracy in general. but i cant get my team to drink the koolaid with me on that.. oh well, maybe thats why we stink lol.

QB, yeah, i agree with ya, but when you bump the other attributes up, they do not do much at all. i fly up and down the ice like i did with 95 speed/acc and im only a 65 in both now.

I'm not sure what to tell you. Let's go between the benches for further analysis... Pierre, what do you think?
