Madden NFL 11 News Post

John Madden offers his insights on Madden NFL's future. Check out the 3 things listed. If you were John Madden, what 3 things would you recommend?

Quote:
"When EA approached Madden in 1986 about a computer game, he expected the result to be a teaching program. He insisted on having 11 players per team on screen. "I didn't want to be a part of it unless it was going to be real, you know, real football, where people would really get something out of it," he says. "That was really our mission statement and really how we have gone forward."

He's indirectly taught generations of fans, NFL players and coaches about the game. "Every player plays it," Moore says. "There is a crop of coaches, the Sean Paytons of the world, who will say, 'Yeah, I learned to love football through Madden.' "

The game has been profitable for Madden, too. EA would not comment on his compensation, but Pachter estimates that EA pays Madden $2 million to $2.5 million annually, nowhere near his estimated $9.5 million a year Sunday Night Football package but much more than his pay as an NFL coach.

As time runs out on the meeting, game designers note some ideas they will explore as they try to transform Madden's insights into game features:
  • Better integration of screen plays.
  • Replays that more clearly show how the defense reacted in the previous play.
  • An option that would let players feel more like Manning by calling two consecutive plays in the huddle or at the line of scrimmage.
"If there's three or four nuggets and gems that are integrated into next year's game that come out of (the meeting), then John is paying for himself 10 times over," Moore says."

Priority of any sports game is to get the basics down of what ever sport your game suppose to be representing. This year all the other sports games have done this.......FIFA, NHL, 2k11, MLB The Show.

It is only the football games that so far this generation of gaming that hasn't done this yet. Because at the end of the day, it is football after all, so football basics should be priority number 1.

Online, MUT, etc should take a back seat.

It seems the one of priorities are Back Cover features instead of fixing what you have. NBA 2k11 made huge improvements in a one year cycle. Besides MJ, they worked on every mode they have without adding "it" feature. Having competition makes developers work towards having the game on the market. Madden havin no competition, is the only game on the market. So they are not forced to make drastic improvements. It is like "our way or the highway."

That was the best feature Madden had and they axed it.
Actually, this is still in the game. Check your manual, I think it's L and R trigger pulled together.

I'm looking in the manual, it isn't in there.

It was taken out, I belive in 10. I know it was in 08 and 09, but you had to pull a trigger, like you said.

Whoops! I'm sorry, I swear I saw it in there where you pulled both the L and R triggers, then used the R stick. My bad, Gotmadskillz.

It was suppposed to be more a shot at EA. Unfortunantly, we all only have one current NFL game to play, and I would hate to turn it on and be limited to one hot route per play.

I agree with you, it should be harder to make multiple adjustments at the los, I just don't think that my options should be limited. I think that in real football, QBs are only limited by time constraints and the ability to communicate what they want to do on a play to the rest of the team, not by options on what they would like to do or change on a play. That is why I came up with the idea of how miscommunication could be implimented into the game through crowd noise, team chemistry, and overall hot route/audible execution data from real teams. This would make it possible to make reads as I see fit, while keeping it realistic to the game.

At the beginning and end of the day, Madden NFL has more important issues that need to be addressed before play calling and play switching should be a focus, in my opinion. The laundry list of issues that I stated in my original post should serve as a primary focal point for the EA dev team. Period. If, EA's goal truely is to develope a realistic game with everything you see on sunday in the game. But, with EA Sports, it's take it, or leave it. No competition, no evolution.

EA CAN'T EVEN GET ON 2K'S LEVEL, and that game wasn't perfect either. SMH! I say again, we deserve better.
Apology accepted, I just felt like you called me an idiot because I had a different opinion. I'm a big 2k guy myself, and APF has hot route limits, so I see where that was a quick fix that kind of emulated some realism. I would prefer the solution you listed given time constraints and communication issues myself.

I just want what he said, the madden game to be like the real NFLThere needs to more trades for picks. More CPU trades in Draft.Trade block needs to be fixed. Usually players get put up for Draft picks.
Randomized draft classes. Ex. DT Storm Williams in a draft with Qb Jemarcus Austin. The abilty to edit draft classes. There are too many short QBs.
I want to see Todd Mcshay and Mel Kiper for draft prospects. Adam Schefter for News Updates. There should be a Weekly Wrapup that discuss win & losses and upcoming games, injuries, award nominees, weather, highlights, draft prospects, coaches on hot seat.
There should be a nfl.com menu page like NBA and MLB 2K.

Player and team chemistry tied the coaching staff. Right now Madden is 22 players on the field. I don't see them as a team except for the color of their jersey. I want to see a more team over individual player concept. Would go a long way towards play now and franchise modes. Right now too many players are interchangable on teams and why keep a qb for more than three years if a better rated guy can come in and do better even if its mid season. Maybe a continuity rating or something. Ultimate team has a version of chemistry why not borrow amd tweak that and add in playing time to factor into it?

I'm hoping that was a feature added to MUT in order to evaluate it's popularity for Franchise mode.

As someone who could care less about modes such as MUT, that addition alone would make the time spent on that mode worthwhile for myself and other offline franchise mode gamers.
