NHL 11 News Post

Hey guys, Gurn Sumal here and I just wanted to let everybody know that the NHL 11 update is now live and is ready for download. I would also like to thank you guys for being very patient as this was a massive update that had me and the other guys (Andy Agostini and Anthony Parra) working around the clock to get this out as fast as we can.

One of the reasons we took so long with the update is as you all know we now have 10 leagues in our game (CHL being three of them) so each league has different guidelines to which players we can and cannot use. So unlike you (our consumers), we cannot create any player we want and just put him in the game, we must get clearance from each individual league before we can proceed in creating him.

So with the NHLPA, all we have to wait for is when a player has stepped on the ice for his first shift in the NHL, we can then create him. If it’s a goalie we can create him when he is on a score sheet as a backup. For the AHL we have to wait for each player (even if he’s in the game already) to sign his PHPA form. This form is what makes any player playing in the AHL a member of the Pro Hockey Players Association which in turn lets us use his name and likeness in the game. This is why you’ll see players that are in the game currently on a CHL team (prior to this update) that are no longer in the game until they return in a future update as soon as they have signed their PHPA agreement. In terms of the CHL, there are over 400 players we added as the league has massive turnover. This affected every roster and because of this we had to get these players in the game otherwise we would have players who are no longer part of the CHL in our game to fill out rosters.

Now that we got the licensing stuff out of the way we can talk about the good stuff. We’re planning on roughly the same schedule for updates as we had last year so injuries (week to week injuries or greater) will be taken into account as well as updated lines if needed from the last game that team played. So be prepared as some teams will have a different look each and every update just due to injuries this year.

As we are moving forward this year with more roster updates we will be evaluating players at different intervals during the season to determine if anybody need to be tweaked up or down in their attributes. This will be for players who are having a breakout year or a major drop in their talent. This is only to simulate what is going on this year and next year the player will be reevaluated so their numbers might go up or down depending on their career path and overall skills.

The first update has about 600 new players on from around the world. Here are a few of the more well known:

Derek Stepan NYR
Nick Leddy CHI
Zac Dalpe CAR
Oliver Ekman-Larsson PHO
Brayden Schenn LAK
Mark Olver COL
Magnus Paajarvi EDM
Jordan Eberle EDM
Taylor Hall EDM
Tommy Wingels SJS
Marcus Johansson WAS
Jonas Holos COL
Jarred Tinordi London Knights
Jack Campbell Windsor Spitfires
Louis Leblanc Montreal Juniors

On top of all that we have updated the goalie equipment for the NHL goalies about 65 or so goalies.

So I hope you like the first roster update. We are currently working on the PHPA agreements for the players that are new to the AHL this year so we can put those prospects into the game as well.

Hope you guys enjoy playing with these rosters.

-Gurn

They definitely edited equipment........it;s like they used a default pattern for certain pads and they all have a black stripe down the side for certain sets.

So far I have seen Schneider, Lehtonern, Rask, Thomas all have this thick black stripe running down the pad. Miller has the wrong equipment. Tons of goalies have the brand name whited out, etc.

Dipietro has the wrong eqipment

Ryan Miller is actually correct - didnt realize he went back to his old pads

Gonna take a long time for us to get things right

Always takes ages editing goalies too! At least Price's are just plain white!

To TNKNGM:

Did you download the roster update on PS3 or Xbox 360? I've been checking the "Download Rosters" section on my Xbox 360 version every 5 minutes for the last 2 hours, and I've seen nothing.

Also, I noticed that EA's NHL Forum is down, and has been down since around 5:30am EST. I'm seriously starting to wonder what the hell is going on up there in Vancouver...did the zombie apocalypse start there when the roster update was supposed to go live?

It looks like every goalie with Vaughn V4 pads has a black stripe down the outer front of the pad.

UGH!!!!

I would love to see exactly how much you guys actually look at that. I mean aren't you playing the game?

I may get like a 3 second look every game at a goalie.

Oh well, to each his own I guess.
yes, to each their own.. but, ea markets the game as the most realistic representation of the NHL. so when they fail to make the goalies look 100% realistic, they fail..

Ok lets forget about the equipment for a second a realize all the important NHL team assets that are left out of the AHL this roster update. Im not even talking fringe prospects but blue chip core future NHLers no where to be found. EA has really dropped the ball in the offline franchise aspects of ALL their games in lieu of making the most money they can off micro transactions and the online community.

Its sad, and the franchise/offline demographic is pretty tired of them at this point.

At this point, I'm almost starting to wonder if we should be pointing our fingers at the big wig's within EA who make the hiring/funding decisions within each department. I know that EA Vancouver had some lay-offs within the last few months(EA claimed it was normal seasonal lay-offs), so it's possible that EA's NHL development team didn't/still doesn't have the manpower/funding to fix all of the issues post-release with offline and online modes.

GM mode is broken, the rosters still aren't up to par with what EA claimed they would be, EA's servers are still crap, the playoffs in HUT/EASHL are still having a lot of problems, etc etc etc...and while all this is happening, EA is getting a large revenue increase over NHL 10 because of all the micro-transactions in HUT.

I could understand all of these issues taking a long while to fix if this was still NHL 10, but with NHL 11 having a large increase in revenue because of micro-transactions, you would think that EA could better fund the NHL development team so that these issues could be fixed in a more timely fashion.

Might we be able to assume for a moment that these players, like the Boston prospect mentioned who is playing for Providence, haven't been made members of the PHPA yet (whatever that process might be). Last year, they mentioned that they couldn't add players to AHL rosters unless they were members of the PHPA. It could simply be that their hands are tied, though it would be nice to hear this from them.

There were still players missing late in the season last year from EA's rosters in the AHL.

I understand the licensing part of the equation, thats why the decision to not allow roster sharing is really a head scratcher. They take the ability away from the community and come out with this, its just not a smart way to handle your consumers what so ever. This coupled with the state of bugs in this game overall and I think some of these sites and reviewers really need to re review this game and give it the 7.5-8.0 rating it deserves.

Okay, so they were in the game as part of the CHL. The CHL is three amateur leagues, no licensing needed. The AHL is a professional league with its own players union (PHPA), and AHL players need to be members of the PHPA to be in the game. Former CHL players that are new to the AHL may not yet be members of the PHPA, hence not yet in the game (or not now in the game). Again, it would be nice to hear this from EA, and perhaps they'll say as much in that blog post regarding the roster update that was promised.

You gotta make sure you only have 23 players on your roster, send down scratched players until you reach 23 or less.

im not really into the color or type of equipments each player is using (sorry if this may offend some of you), but what im disgusted about this roster updates is that, how come, EA did a marvelous job on releasing current roster update for season 2010-11 of their NBA LIVE 2010????

I dont know if Im just missing it, but in the Manitoba Moose roster, I cant see Cody Hodgson. WHY IS THAT???? i mean this kind of GLARING MISTAKE is HORRIBLE.

Last year in a roster blog they had a video explaining how the licensing worked. They should repost it.
