EA Sports have posted a new NBA Elite 11 defensive blog.
Quote:
"This year we’ve spoken a lot about “Hands-On Control” and how it relates to shooting, dribbling and Post Play but we haven’t given you a ton of info on defense in NBA ELITE 11. Our goals for defense this year were simple:
- Ensure “Hands-On Control” applied to defense just as much as offense.
- Reward defenders for good positioning using the new Real Physics system
- Provide the user the tools to be proactive on defense.
- And most importantly - making defense fun to play.
Mistakes of the past – In previous basketball games there have been many gimmicks and features that allowed you to guard the ball but took the control completely out of your hands. Features like the “hold a button down and let the AI play defense for you”. Or, using 2 player animations as a crutch to stop the dribbler from getting to the basket – taking control away from both the offense and defense. Features like this aren’t fun, remove any element of skill from the game and limit the user’s ability to control the player. All reasons for a new approach to playing defense.
On Ball Defense – the most important aspect of defense is guarding the ball. This year we’ve developed a great system for dribbling the ball using a combination of the left and right analog sticks. This gives the offensive player the ability to pull off any type of dribble move, at any time, in any direction, while always maintaining user control. It’s a very powerful game play mechanic that could have been very unbalanced had we not put the same emphasis on guarding the ball."
I also don't feel the developers are doing anyone any favors by commenting in these forums. I would rather the finished product speak for itself. Good games typically sell, bad ones usually do not.
You speak as if there is a supreme entitlement that must be vindicated. For if not, you will withhold your gold pieces and forever cast all that toil away on this NBA Elite 11 to depths of game maker Haddes, where they will never be seen nor heard from again.
Really now, these guys work for guy, who works for another guy, who works for another guy, rinse and repeat until you get to the top guy at Electronic Arts Corporation. You have no idea what limitations are in place as far anything where this game is involved. Not demos, blogs, videos or any other information relating or pertaining to said game.
These guys bust their hump to make the best game possible given the time and resources available to them. And when the game is finished they’ll give you a test drive. From that test drive you decide whether or not to buy the game. It’s a simple process.
The fact that these guys are even here to dialogue with us should be appreciated and respected. I am not saying that these guys are being personally disrespected, but, if every time they come around they’re being slammed no matter what they do and basically told, in a roundabout way that they suck at their job, there is going to come a point where they say; “F*@k it” why bother and not come around anymore.
The amount of criticism positive and negative for a game that very few if any of us here at OS have even had the chance to play yet, tells me that a lot of this criticism is merely co-signing, because it seems to be in vogue for this game.
I’ve said before and I’ll say it again “WAIT FOR THE DEMO, IT WILL GET HERE WHEN ITS HERE, THEN VOTE WITH YOUR FEET, IF NECESSARY, ALL THE WAY TO THE OTHER OPTION”
MrMars
I think the thing you need to realize is that most of the people who are giving this "vogue criticism" are people that BOUGHT nba live 10. People that spent their hard earned money on last years bball game from ea sports. People enjoyed the heck out of nba live 10 and expected ea to continue to improve upon the solid foundation they'd built. But guess what? EA decided " let's start all over again even though our customers never asked for it!" This is where most of the criticism is coming from. It wouldn't be vouge to criticize nba elite if ea didn't give us a reason to.
As far as the devs go, i agree that they should be respected more for taking the time out of their day to converse with their potential customers.
There's no doubt about that.

Broken record much? I agree with the message but I'm sure this new dev team have got that message.
OS used to be a cool place back in the day and now I hardly want to read some of the dribble that is posted.
Props to ReAnim and others for still coming here to post whilst the masses wait as I could easily understand if they didn't. The hype is obviously here otherwise you wouldn't have so many crying for the release of a demo and if the other EA demo's are anything to go buy, it should be worth the wait as they are a full demo experience. Assume the Elite demo will be the same.
People need to chill. Stop regurgitating the same thing over and over. Constructive critism is a way to get a good message across and no one should be able to do that until the demo drops. I'd say it does more harm to devs visiting this site and communicating with OS than the other way around. I'm just as big a critic of EA. Those who know me will know that. Less info doesn't mean this is 07 all over again. There's some good conversation going on but most threads derail into the same thing. Ugh.
Bring on the demo. I'm more than happy to wait until it's ready. It's unlikely I'll be purchasing this year due to issues like injuries and this being the first year, etc, but still looking forward to waiting and testing the demo out.

The reason why people are saying the same things is because people keep asking the same questions as to why folks are frustrated with what ea has done. My post wasn't directed toward the devs. It was directed toward the person i quoted. Also, you don't need to play a game to criticize things like graphics, animations, and commentary which is what most people are complaining about.

+1
And - why do people keep saying EA is "starting all over again"? Yes they made some changes (obviously) but this is not starting over...
at least it wasn't about offensive controls. Props on the blog. I hated how they kept throwing offensive controls in our face, "feel the controls, feel the controls, FEEL THE FREAKIN' CONTROLS"
Hoepfully, some defensive stops videos can be released.

I appreciate Re and Steps staying involved...
BUT...
Last night (9-16-2010) during the final game of the WNBA Finals there was an NBA Elite commercial... and it had ABSOLUTELY NO GAME FOOTAGE WHATSOEVER... NONE... NO IN-GAME... NO CUTAWAYS... NOT EVEN ANY "FAKE" RENDERING.
THEY DID NOT SHOW THEIR PRODUCT DURING THE ADVERTISEMENT.
How should the consumer feel about EA's confidence in their own product when all they show is old reels of nba footage and NOTHING from the game being advertised?
I'm not sure how much more clearly you can say "we have nothing to show you" when you make a CONCIOUS EFFORT TO SHOW US NOTHING.
Truth is truth... we are already playing 2k11, becoming familiar with it and reenacting all the gameplay we've seen in their innumerable vids.
Re and Steps, you want our support (understandably cuz biz is biz)... but there just isn't any substance behind your pleas that would encourage us to take Elite seriously.
AND THAT'S NOT BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO... but because WE HAVE NOTHING TO GO ON.
That latest commercial (which did not show the game AT ALL) is the status quo for your business model and the core base knows it... that's why these cryptic blogs aren't given a very warm reception.
WE'RE TRYING OUR HARDEST TO GIVE ELITE A CHANCE... but in all honesty, I think we may be trying harder to like your product than you are giving us reason to (and that's a big problem).
It cannot be any clearer in regards to what we want to see, so when you choose not to give it to us... well...
You honestly can't say WE didn't try.
Cmon... (and this just an educated assumption but) if Elite was "lights out fantastic", you'd be ramming gamplay footage down our throats...
2k does.
So you really can't say "you can't win either way"... sure you can!! SHOW US THE GAME.
THE REAL GAME... IN ACTION.
Better yet, let us play it.
Seriously, that can't be too much to ask.
(Because you're really running out of shot clock with the base.)
LOL you can start complaining when the game is actually available and you are unable to try it first (but it's still better to borrow it, because the retail is never completely the same).
Silly complaints.
If you are impatient enough and you have to decide 3 weeks before, then you probably suffer in other aspects of life too. It always hurts us/you, impatience that is.
Too little too late with the white flag blogs. Werent they promising a blog a week, and only 1 of those ever showed up weeks ago?
Meh, wheres more vids at and not the 1 minute cherry-picked vid of a defender getting pumped faked 15ft in the air and able to recover on the play? Guess I'll read it...
We get it.
From your signature, to your repeated posts how you're not even going to be trying the demo, your stance in this forum is getting old.

This is a GREAT POST.
Everyone needs to take a step back. The developers understand people are frustrated there is no demo yet. There is nothing they can do so to keep going on and on about it is worthless.
If people were happy with the information, marketing and the way the game looked they would be giving positive feedback. We've been hearing for weeks how for this game you need to feel it to appreciate it. We haven't felt it yet.

To go off what Oausar said, lack of info on everything outside of controls isnt helping to make any informed decision, so until that happens my stance wouldnt change.
One company promised info every Friday, and the other company is just releasing lots of info every other day.

They don't have to be happy about it. This is a thread about the defensive blog.
Just like we handle it in the other forums, when things are released we discuss can discuss them. Complaining about the lack of information/demo release in every single thread is completely worthless and does nothing but sidetrack the discussion.
My biggest concern for defense is the problem with some physics issues. I have already seen vids where momentum didnt have enough affects on the play. Guys are jumping way too high without even bending at the knees. I have already seen too many blocked jumpshots because guys dont have real physics. Which starts to make me question everything.
How can you have a REAL TIME PHYSICS game with false physics?
But there was some good things in the blog. I really like the idea of contesting shots while still having control of your body. That is pure genius if it works right.

According to your signature your mind is already made up so don't worry about it. We get your point, you are not happy with EA. Who cares, now move on.

Real time physics has more to do with the way the ball reacts than the players.
