Madden NFL 11 News Post

The Madden name carries tremendous weight. It is a decorated franchise that has been equated with football simulation greatness at various points in its life cycle. At other times, some gamers have also been quick to point out its various flaws and have been very critical of the franchise as a whole.

The point is that gamers expect Madden to feature the tightest gameplay controls and an endless amount of on-field strategy. These are the types of expectations that Madden has to attempt to live up to on a yearly basis.

And so with the release of Madden 11 becoming a reality, the developers at EA Sports Tiburon are now going to be fed to the lions once again -- the Operation Sports fans surely being the harshest of critics in the forums of an impassioned sports gaming nation. The game has also been given to a gaggle of media members so they can review and examine every decision and every new feature.

But this year it would seem that the Madden 11 team has answered their critics with a resounding question of their own: Are you not entertained?

Madden returns this summer refined on every level (with some obviously being more refined than others). The gameplay is smoother, the graphics are more vibrant and the game has come to life with added vitality. This is the most entertaining Madden I have played since the Playstation 2 days.

what are you basing that off of, may I ask? Are you MOD approved in impressions thread? (sorry if you are I missed it)

@Ryan36: I think special teams is huge for a review due to the issues of Players just watching their blocking assignments blow by them and give you no greater starting point than the 20 yd line (All-Pro, I'm sure rookie is different).

Also defense is questionable for the CPU and USER....but you are right half-of the game review is missing.

There were a lot of light touches here, but nothing in detail...which is what we look for in a review.

I won't be getting this first day, but will pick it up sooner, rather than later. I REALLY want to see depth added to franchise/owner as well as Superstar. there's just so much you can add....

this close to release it's kind of irrelevant Klocker ,unless he's posting impressions...sounds like he just has a general feel for madden over the years which is fine

The crowd noise needs some serious work, the presentation needs serious work, and the announcing is still off...the game plays good though...locomotion has done wonders for NCAA and Madden

no mention of special teams being out of whack? the fact that I have to KICK FIELD GOALS WITH MY EYES CLOSED to have even a small chance of missing? That there is only a global set of ST sliders so if you turn down FG accuracy even the slightest bit the CPU misses all of their extra points? Really? The fact that calling punt block gives you DAYS of open space to return punts? That Kickoffs are almost impossible to return past the 25 and the CPU will NEVER return them past the 20 on you? The fact that the CPU doesn't even bother to try to pin punts inside your 20 yard line? Really?

The guy spent 9 paragraphs on GAMEFLOW.

Three full paragraphs on AUTO TURBO!!!!

No mention of the CPU all out blitzing in obvious passing situations leading to easy scores for the human?

No mention of strategy pad being borderline impossible to use because the CPU snaps the ball so quickly?

I really like this game...but this review sounds like it goes on the back of the box for the game.
just basing off the demo alone... the motion and the flow and feel of an NFL game captivated me, regardless of all of the nitpickers. That's why I can understand his focusing in on that as it REALLY is evident and makes the game different. The FEEL of the game, the control and the imersion into an NFL experience is evident and light years ahead of where we were just three seasons ago. which was an arcade crapfest.

for those that don't appreciate what they have done here, they are obviously looking for something compeltely different in their experience. Being a member here for years now though I have come to expect a certain level of unrealistic expectations and sour grapes form a large vocal majority of posters here.

Oh and i have played Madden every year this generation for a total of about 1 month as I hated it but like the direction they have been going. this year it FEELS like they nailed it (for now as it will continue to evolve over the years)

I'm sorry but this read like an EA press release straight off the sunshine and lollipop express.

This line really cracked me up.

The Franchise mode is back, and it boasts the same features we have seen in the past.
...boasts? BOASTS?!
Sorry that's just really funny.

On other sites I'd expect this. On OS I'd expect Franchise review to be one of if not THE most important aspects of a review. That was our focus here....wasn't it?

This review was a little TOO well written. And although I have no problem with a score, since it's OPINION, this review reeks of any sort of objectivity and to me is an embarrassment for OS.

Klocker, he's focusing on aspects of the REVIEW that weren't mentioned (as am I)...which is fine, and throwin' in a couple of his own thoughts. Mostly this thread is supposed to be about the review more than the game, bud.

Nah man, I like Madden 11 a lot.

But I'm getting reallyyy sick of year after year OS's review quality going down hill.

I'm holding OS to high expectations, not Madden. I know they can do better than this.

I feel ya , Jistic...I do.

I like the review. I don't see the problem with defense in general. I have used the Texans for most of my games and have kept the offenses in check. Sure I give up big plays from time to time but the major difference from my point of view is I don't feel "cheated" when it happens, unlike Madden 10 when players were warping all over the place. The thing that guys are not keeping in mind is this. Great players play good, and Bad players play bad. There seems to be a misconception out there that everybody can play at an elite level at every position and that simply isn't so. If you have marginal corners and safeties you will get marginal coverage. Ditto for ever other position. You must play to your teams strengths. No more hiding in a cover 4 all game and letting the CPU get cheap interceptions for you. You have to earn them now...

Thats all I got for now fellas

again, more people are expressing displeasure with the review as a single entity, than with the game itself

OS is the biggest sports gaming site on the net, right?

They should have the best, most in-depth review by far. Things should be nit-picked, investigated, revealed, etc. The games reviewed here should be torn apart and picked through and every single detail pointed out, both good and bad.

No excuses for sounding like a review from the casual gamer, because OS is not for the casual gamer....at least this is my impressions

edit: this happens every year though, so I'm not really surprised, and I don't even really care...but it just seems like the reviews at OS need to be THE reviews for sports games and they just fall so short of that

I agree. Sounds like it was written for a different audience.

But guys writing reviews is HARD, VERY VERY HARD work. Bear that in mind.

the ps3 replays thing really bugs me. it bugged me last year because i would have a nice play and then try to make a highlight but it would get cut short. i lost a lot of good highlights out there

i hope they fix it

You nailed my thoughts on the review Jistic.

I think people are going to need to differentiate between comments on the review vs. the game itself. OS has high standards for reviews which is why many people can't wait to read them and trust them. This review did not meet those standards imo.

Much better review than IGN, and I agree with the score too, 9.0 on this site is a big deal, glad to hear you like it so much.

Guys, arriving at a number is the HARDEST part of a review. I wouldn't spend too much time on what the score is. We've changed it so many times over the years, trying to get it right/accurate.

There's a lot to consider. What did the game get last year? Is this year better? I think it was our review of the Show 10 that gave it a worse score than last year, even though after the patch it was a better game, in most people's minds.

It can be very tricky...the info to glean from the review is the content itself. From any website.
