2K Sports has just posted another NBA 2K11 Developer Insight. This one focusing on making a smarter game, written by Mike Wang and Jerson Sapida.

"Now let’s talk about AI. Authenticity and Signature Style have always been strong points of 2K basketball. For NBA 2K11, we really wanted to take that to new heights both on the player level, as well as the team level. When I came back to the team last year and saw how much work the guys had done with the player tendencies, in partnership with 82games, I was really impressed. The thing I was most impressed by is how well all of the new tendencies had been integrated into the code. You can really see how each player rating and tendency is translated into how a real basketball player “thinks” out there on the floor. When I first played NBA 2K10, the difference between the superstars and the not-so-superstars immediately came through. But as I took the game to the lab, and really dissected each player and team, it really gave me an appreciation for just how much work had been done in that regard. Kobe loved his dribble pull up, Melo attacked like Melo on the perimeter as well as in the post, and J.R. Smith launched any shot from anywhere and everywhere without hesitation."
No it isn't....online gaming the the #1 priority for me. I never play NBA2k games for their single player or Association mode....why?? Because the AIs simply are not good enough. Maybe this year might be different based on what the producers said about the AIs offensively and defensively. But then again...i heard this talk of improvements every year ....i am not convinced until i played the game. But nothing can beat HUMAN INTELLIGENCE!! That's where the fun is for me.
So i am wondering if online going to have 3 seperate lobbies now? One for Default, Casual and one for Simulation? I think i prefer Default. And if the game play realistic and not lagging, i will try simulation.
Wait...What???
isnt this the point?
Oh yea, All human are not smart..Thats why I stay alway from randoms
I didn't expect to get such a informative blog 2 months out. I would list all the things I liked, but that would just be me copying and pasting the whole blog.

Thats YOU not the rest of us
This Insight is about the AI so all of the online talk doesnt belong in here, so lets not clog this thread up with online talk
...and most of all the AI should be the most important aspect of making the game #1 point blank, and Thank Goodness 2k decided to highlight that by talking about the AI this soon and as one of their first blogs
Now this is an insight ... as high as my expectations were, this insight has more than satisfied me ... I wish 2k at least let MW to be cosupervising the info that its released on those insights ... specifically, what is being said and how is being said. No mancrush or biase here, it is just that I need this level of detail for the rest of the insights that may come after and he is experienced in providing that.
Those new tendencies are indeed going to expand the level of signature play and hopefully, will be updated when appropiate. I just hope that within those many third party consultants, one will replace the 2kinsider and his out of scale updates. On the other hand, with each expansion, the work of the unnoficial editors become more ... thus also, more distinc and apparent.
game style sounds great. It really puzzles me how both b-ball games took out the presets and things from the past gens and now it looks like 2k is expanding on that idea.Overall a nice technical blog.
That was definitely the best developer insight blog so far. I love how they're making a strong effort than ever before to make elite point guards stick out. That "pass-first" tendency also frees up the passer rating to actually do its intended job. I also love that guys like Duncan, Wade and Bryant will use the glass more on offense.
Having authentic plays and better "freelance" animations are also going to help playing half-court offense more fun and less of a chore. Maybe we'll also see Shawn Marion or Carmelo Anthony leak-out or cherry-pick for easy baskets like real life too?
Side-note: The kicks on Carmelo looked awesome and the lighting really has improve a lot.
I really enjoyed the developer insight but some things missing (perhaps they will be discussed in a future insight):
-Lead passing. I want to know if this is more realistic. I know Rob Jones said this:
Quote:
We wanted to differentiate good passers from bad ones both from a User standpoint and from a ratings standpoint.
-I'm not sure but is this the animation I've been talking about(Da_Czar called me out)? Off-ball defenders 'putting a hand on their man' animation.
Quote:
For offball (and onball) defenders, they will now cut under the traffic when chasing after their man out in the perimeter. This way, they do not get tangled and get beat especially if their man is making a cut to the basket. It was pretty frustrating last year when AI defenders put themselves in a bad situation because of a poor pursuit angle and decision making. This is much better now with NBA 2K11.
-More types of fouls and violations. With all these new defensive animations, there should also be illegal screens/pushing/holding/hand-check/tripping/double fouls/offball fouls. Also offensive fouls when the offensive player would clear the defender with their off arm. Would make the game more physical and more team fouls which is realistic.
I'd also like to see carry/palming/double dribble violations being added when users try to do too many crossovers at once.
-After 12 years of 2K basketball, the referees still don't have whistles!! I always find it awkard when I hear a whistle and yet it is nowhere to be seen. This is evident in the LeBron pic. Perhaps that is a 2K10 pic or an early build.

I agree. Although im a homer for audio and presentation type things, every insight so far has amped me up even more for this game. I guess i pretty much know what to expect in the audio/presentation area so these things are fresh concepts that I didn't even think about.
I feel lucky that the dudes working on this game are the dudes working on this game, I dont know them but im like thankful man, I never felt that way before.
I think 2k is also giving back to us.From dominating in sales last year, they now have more money to outsource, expand, and upgrade. If everything goes as planned I believe we're waiting on a masterpiece.

I'm hoping they nail atmosphere like Live 10 did last year and expand on it.
