NCAA Football 11 News Post

Ben Haumiller has just posted another NCAA Football 11 blog, as he discusses play calling.

Quote:
"The most important screen in the game without a doubt is the play call screen. This is where you need to make quick strategic decisions. It is of the utmost importance that everything is available to you quickly and easily; especially when going up against an up tempo, no-huddle offense.

With that in mind we determined that the play call screen needed to be streamlined for NCAA Football 11. A lot of the Play Call features I'll be talking about have been in previous versions of the game, our goal wasn't to blow everything up and start from scratch, however, we wanted to make it feel as if all of your playbook options were always at your fingertips. In this blog, we will go into those updates as well as talk about the crucial role the NCAA community members had in shaping the final version of the screen.

During our NCAA Football 11 Community Day event we brought in a number of hardcore NCAA players to check out this year's game early in the development process and collect their feedback. Since play call is so important we spent a lot of time going over this screen to make sure that we got it just right. The feedback we received was outstanding. When it was all said and done we were very happy with the results. A big shout out to the community members who helped shape play call into its final version - this was a prime example of how getting the community involved early and often can help make the game the best it can be. I'll point out some of the specific updates that were made based on this feedback as I go into how play call will look and function in NCAA Football 11."

Wow! If you notice the SMU playbook screen they have a couple of plays that are actually Run & Shoot plays. I have several Mouse Davis playbooks as well as a June Jones playbook from Hawaii, and 61 X Choice and 60 Go are actual plays. In the screen they are in trips and these are called in the playbooks that I have as:

Early Rip 61 X Choice - Early Rip 60 Go

Just cool to see the actual plays in the game. Some cool option routes available there that haven't been in during past games.

They have been saying this for weeks and weeks.. If its not something that will blow me away, I'm gonna be real disappointed given the way they have been like "O just wait!, It gets better!!". Just deliver the news already.

Hopefully the big ticket items will be discussed pretty soon.

Streamed lined play calling was another another thing on the EA survey list. Next up AD mode/Coaches plzzzzzz

I really don't like the new play calling screen. I liked how it was before. I don't want to have to go into "Bluff" mode in order to "bluff" my opponent. Just keep it how it was. I don't understand why they have to change stuff that wasn't an issue.

Also, no huddle in the demo was a joke. Missouri ran it, but only when convenient (not true, they always are no huddle). Also, it was incredibly fast. They would have worn out their players like heck trying to go at the pace the game had them going. No huddle doesn't necessarily mean super fast paced!! Plus, they weren't even looking to the sidelines for plays or anything. I hope this was just in the demo or else the whole no huddle offensive scheme will be a joke.

i think no huddle would be better implemented by looking towards the sidelines during the play calling screen, and seeing actual substitutions jog on/off the field. it would defintely add to the realism by seeing that and force people to stay in current formations due to the play clock. other than that im loving the different playbooks this year, especially the running game!

Sooooooo....after that long read it's basically the same as last year? or worse?

While tedious, I can get used to it on offense because you have plenty of time but, the 10 second countdown to pick a defensive play has no delay in it prior to countdown. Way too quick. That needs to be addressed.

GTech and Navy had these in 10. 60 Go and 60 Choice were the names. Pretty much the same routes though.

It certainly was sad that triple option teams got Run and Shoot routes/plays before teams like Hawaii/SMU(that actually run the R&S) did.

Hopefully, we get these same plays meshed with Motion from Balanced to trips + meshed with a PA Bubble/Run.

I have asked for this a million times and hopefully one day we will get it but we need layered play calling. It is time that we make the game more life like on that level.

I HATE the new playcalling screen

not only the scrolling left and right to see when you finally find your play, but if you by mistake move the stick up or down it'll switch PB's on you, delaying you even more and likely causing you to call the wrong play, not call a play at all (which result on man 2 cover) and likely cost you a timeout.

FAIL!

I dont like the new screen because you can only select plays with "X", therefore you have to highlight the actual play. Whereas last year you could see 3 plays and pick them with like "X" or Triangle, or Square button

I don't know who gave them the feedback on the play calling screens, but their judgment should be questioned... As many others have stated the new play call screen is garbage.

The old style was fine, heck even perfect IMO. The one thing that did NOT need to be messed with and they hacked it to pieces.

Like most of you, I'm not a fan of the new play calling style. I don't think it's terrible but I don't want to be forced to call plays by formation in order to use the different packages. Madden did this last year and it was very frustrating for me. I'd like the option to search for pass plays but move one of my top WRs into the slot to play the matchups there...as it stands, I can't do that. As others have suggested, I REALLY hope that they left in the option to switch back to the old method...

According to the blog, this can be done in "Bluff" mode. Not sure why they are forcing you to do it that way though...again, messing with something that didn't need to be messed with.

I also hate the new play calling screen. Its very time consuming to pick a play scrolling from side to side. Then you have to highlight the play and press A.

Some packages have 20 or 25 plays in it. Finding play #18 will require you to scroll and scroll till you find it. That chews up a lot of time on the playclock. Also if you accidentally press up or down you get another package, further delaying your choice.

I want to be able to pick six plays at a time, by scrolling up and down. Also I want to be able to pick a play that's on the screen by pressing the button that corresponds to the play. Like in 2010, I would see six plays and press either X, A, B, LB, RB, Y and away I go. I got to pick what plays I wanted quickly and efficiently.

I hope there's still time to change the coding on the play calling screen and that its not difficult. Because this play calling selection screen is just plain horrible.

Its worse on defense. With the no huddle offenses I need to be able to pick the defense that I want fast. Good luck trying to get that zone blitz play you want in the 8 seconds you have to scroll through 30 some plays.

Why make something as fundamental as play calling more tedious than it needs to be?

Agreed. Why mess with something you've already got right.

As a strictly "Ask Corso/Madden" player, I must say that I'm loving the new default playcalling screen. I need to dig around with it some more to see if I can still easily access formation subs without accessing Advanced. If not, then that needs to be fixed.

It's not that I don't have the capacity to pick a formation, then a play. It's that I get tired of spending 75% of my time in the playcall screen and not on the field. 18 suggested plays each time is more than enough for me. And I'm sure I'm using a much larger variety of plays and formations with this method than I would if I was using the advanced method. (I think Ian & co. did a study and found that most people use less than 15 plays or something!)

Combine this with the accelerated clock, and I'm going to be ripping through my dynasty.

I know I am in the VAST minority. Please don't call me horrible names
