Madden NFL 11 News Post

ESPN Videogames' Jon Robinson and recently announced play-by-play man Gus Johnson teamed together in this Madden NFL 11 video.

Quote:
"One of the biggest complaints the EA Sports design team heard about "Madden NFL 10" was the lack of energy and emotion from the announce team. When you're playing a video game, do you want to listen to stale play-by-play where the announcer simply deadpans: "He's at the 20. He's at the 10. Touchdown." Or would you rather hear a passionate call where Chris Johnson breaks into the open field and you hear the announcer shout out: "He's got getting away from the cops speed!"

Enter Gus Johnson.

The crew at EA Sports wanted to do a major overhaul to the audio presentation in the game, and in doing so, signed the hippest, most electric play-by-play man in the booth. And by signing Gus Johnson to voice "Madden NFL 11" and beyond (along with Cris Collinsworth for color commentary), they are adding Johnson's signature style, catchphrases, and energy to every down of the game.

"You have to remember, when the 'Madden' series first started, we only had 500 lines of commentary," explains the game's audio designer, Ronnie Morales. "Today we have over 90,000 lines, so we wanted somebody who can deliver those iconic calls, those calls that give you chills, and Gus Johnson is the only guy out there right now who can deliver that type of experience."

Gus Johnson is GREAT and I'm pleased with the addition.

However, thank God it's Gus Johnson and not Jon Robinson. Seriously, that Jon Robinson guy has no future if he's headed into that direction. Absolutely horrible, IMO. Not just what he says but his knowledge. He's pounding the decision to run the football on 3rd & 1 when you have Frank Gore in the backfield?

Sounded great on Gus Johnson's part, that other guy was complete trash though.

After playing Madden 10 recently, the biggest problem for me, was there was no emotion or energy at all in the game. It makes the game fell dull and boring. No matter what the gameplay is, if you don't have good presentation, the game will not have a long lasting appeal. Bringing in Gus Johnson with his enthusiasm and Chris' energy, the game will sound much better, and will hopefully be a game that people can play for 2 years, if they don't make a game when there is a lockout. I know a lot of people that didn't play madden 10 after the Super Bowl, or just set it aside after a month. Hopefully, Madden 11, the gameplay is much better and smoother, there is the depth in franchise and online franchise, and this presentation element makes it an awesome game.

Atlanta....against.....the Seahawks. I am so sick of them recording just the names of the different teams and playing the recording everytime it came up. And the emphasis in the words were always wrong you know like just the way it sounded. Im really exited about this years game. The play by play sounds great guys great job
Dude...this wasn't actually in game commentary, it was Gus and this other dude simply commenting over already existing gameplay. None of what they said was actual *in game* stuff (although it could be, who knows).

I see everyone is really excited about the Gus Johnson addition, and I am too. But please, keep in mind, it doesn't mean anything if they don't use him right.

just give it a chance. they have a possible home run hitter in gus johnson as the man is full of emotion. i assume (which means nothing) that EA is smart enough to know that they cant screw this oppurtunity up. hopefully with over 90,000 lines like they say, we can get some good stuff. i believe commentary also adds to replayability. i can only imagine gus in the playoffs. please EA, dont bone this up!!!

Robinson ruined the video but besides that I thought it looked solid...even though the seahawks coach looked nothing like Pete Carroll

IMO, even if they used him in same fashion as they did Hammond, Gus will sound a whole lot better. Gus is a much better commentator.

Did anyone see the commentary from the IGN website I have heard three different commentary groups so far Gus&Rob, Gus& the guy on IGN, and another one I found on youtube. Not sure if the youtube one was Gus at all.

Dude...seriously. It was just Gus Johnson and some random journalists dubbing over already shot Madden footage. It means NOTHING.

I realize that I was just asking if anyone had heard the others because I wasn't sure if everyone knew about them.

I laughed at the last line, "looking like JaMarcus Russel, least he didn't fumble" lmao. but no, Robinson did ruin the video not taking it seriously, and cheesy jokes, but i enjoyed it still.

I need some facts here. Was this a video preview of what is going to be in madden or was this a fluff video that is just showing people playing around in the booth?

This is what I hate about Madden and EA, they market the hell out of madden but we has consumer never truly have any idea what the hell is in or out of the game until the game comes out.

So whats the verdict of this video?
It was simply Madden video footage dubbed over by Johnson and Co. in the booth. None of what they actually said is confirmed to be in the game.

It's really not worth it though, consider it dropped.

is this worse than handing over a controller to one of the game reviewers who has NO IDEA how to play football and videos end up being recorded & showing up all over the place

that happens every year

# 37 bo4345 @ 05/22/10 08:26 PM
Oh my goodness, Crazy Train playing in every stadium and Gus Johnson making a mess in his pants on every big play. This year is gonna be intense.

Yah , i have no idee..people liek to let their imaginations run wild.

I liked the guy calling the game; definitely better than Hammond.

The pre-alpha gameplay, though, wasn't too impressive. The pulling guards were off. The video specifically designed to showcase run blocking improvements looked much better and I'd assume was from a more polished build.

Releasing this footage was a curious move to me, but it's fun at least to get a look at the game.

Player models are looking great!
