IceBreaker News Post

Destructoid has the scoop.

"NaturalMotion, the chaps currently working on 505 Games' BackBreaker, has filed a trademark for a similarly titled game -- IceBreaker Hockey. So far, all we know is that NaturalMotion has reserved the name. There's no guarantee that it's making the game right now, but with a title like IceBreaker, who could refuse?"

WOW! I am always up for more hockey titles on the market, especially with NHL 2K apparently going the way of the buffalo this year. If Backbreaker succeeds, I will be excited for the prospects of a hockey version (IceBreaker, apparently) with NaturalMotion technology.

In a perfect world, I would have 2K solely taking a publisher's role on IceBreaker and attaching NHL teams, arenas and players to the game, as that just may be *the* thing to finally get NHL 2K selling again, but it's only wishful thinking on my part...but still, how much do you think the NHL and NHLPA licenses would cost?

Anyway, even if the game comes fully customizable and unlicensed, I'll still be happy. At least there'll be some much-needed variety in the hockey gaming market. Best news I've heard all day.

I was just asking myself why NHL Hits wasn't being made considering it was the best gamecube game of all time

I think they will wait and see how backbreaker sells first. I am all for more options in sports gaming.

Same here. You can never go wrong with more options.

I've already copyrighted 'BatBreaker', so they need to pay me royalties now for their baseball franchise :P

I don't think Basketball would make a good game because there isn't as much contact as in a sport like Football or Hockey. Still, heres to hoping for a great new Hockey game.

As others have said, I too am happy for any new sports gaming options. But, having not seen anything from Backbreaker yet, I can only be cautiously optimistic.

Love it!

NHL 10 has some really nice AI and puck physics, but the player contact is sorely lacking.

What I think would be interesting is putting a Euphoria AI on ice and seeing how the muscle/nervous system/bone structure work with ice.

Everyone seen the tech demo of them "teaching" them to walk. Imagine getting them to SKATE lol

Which is surprising, i've had my doubts about how good BB is going to be, but a move like this makes it seem like they are actually confident in their game (and their ability as developers), which is certainly nice to see
Sony was serious about making tons of sports games once too...remember Gamebreaker? NHL Open Ice? NBA series? Those all sucked...

Being willing to put out games doesn't mean they'll be good...

It was NHL Faceoff and the first couple Gameday and Faceoff titles were solid compared the crap EA was releasing at that time.

Yeah Gameday '97/'98 were better than Madden.

Shootout '97 was better than Live.

Faceoff also had a short run where it was better than the NHL series.

I'm always up for more hockey! I'd love to see a Slapshot game, a little over the top but with a franchise mode.

It's too bad about 2K, but I haven't played it in 3 years. Funny how those two switched roles, as I'd all but stopped playing EA's hockey a few years ago in favour of 2k

I will buy this game if made. I haven't liked EA's or 2K's games on next-gen. Since I've been playing Hitz Pro for going on 7 years now...I think the arcade style would appeal to me.

Agreed. I played the heck out of 2k5-2k7, then didn't love another hockey videogame until NHL 10. I bought 2k10 also, but just couldn't get into it.
