Tecmo Bowl Throwback News Post

Joystiq has posted a rumor on Tecmo Bowl Throwback possibly coming to XBLA and PSN. How cool would that be?

Quote:
"A trusted source (the same who provided us with early knowledge of Lucidity and NBA2K10 Draft Combine) has just informed Joystiq that Tecmo's planned Tecmo Bowl update for XBLA is also coming to PSN. Dubbed "Tecmo Bowl Throwback," the game is a remake of the NES classic, complete with HD graphics and an updated soundtrack -- it also retains the original plays and team stats. And for those of you who fear the fancy-schmancy graphics of high-def games, Tecmo is also including an option to play Tecmo Bowl in its original state. There's even team customization, ensuring your lifelong dream of creating a horribly out-of-shape and uncompetitive Joystiq team is a real possibility."

On-screen d-pad, on-screen "a" and "b", but to avoid mashing on the screen to break tackles make it so shaking the iPhone would break a tackle.

That would avoid the wear-and-tear.

There's other football games for the iphone, BTW. Not sure what the wear and tear is with those games.

Madden 10 is fun as heck. It's 6 bucks, so it's a bit pricey, but i've been playing it all of today. I love it. There's a season mode, the on-field gameplay is really fun, it's a really good package. As far as wear and tear goes, there isn't any button mashing, so it has really no potential to wreck anything. There's an on-screen analog stick and a few buttons depending on the situation, but you don't need to mash any of them or anything. Just lightly press every now and then.

There's also a game called NFL 2010 made by Gameloft that I haven't played yet. I've read it isn't as good, but it's half the price, so it depends on what you care about more.

They nailed fun down completely. I really really wish someone would take the rights to that franchise and carry it on. If you think about it, there's a lot of great balancing factors involved in that game given the fact that guessing any play correctly kills it. That limits "money plays" big time.

The wide open action and excitement I feel playing that game goes unmatched to this day.

I agree, Tecmo Bowl is the GOAT!

As much as I'm a proponent for technological advancements... if you think about this for a moment, you consider that a lot of today's game's are overly technological. They rely on technology, ignore the basics, and as a result aren't as much fun. Tecmo really did nail it in the past. It's a shame that we've had to wait so long for them to get it right again.

Yes, there was something pure and simple, yet deep if you wanted it to be, about Tecmo Bowl that was immensely fun. I often feel like what you say is correct, the technology is abused and sometimes the fun is forgotten. Nintendo at least is one company that recognizes that today. That's why you would think that a Tecmo Bowl game would come out on that system first but oh well...

I agree. I'm totally down for a rock-paper-scissors version of football with some wild twists thrown in. That's what Tecmo is. It doesn't need to be much more than that. More depth leads to more problems sometimes....

One factor that really separated the game was 100% fun. Nobody argued "realistic" this or that. It was just a fun game to play that somewhat resembled football. Nostalgia alone isn't giving me fond memories of this game. It was that good.
