Joined and played a game. Look, for a free coaching simulator, it's certainly good enough to appeal to some people.

It seems to me that the selling point of this is that it's browser-based. In other words, anyone should be able to play it in a lot of different locations. However, the fact that you need a 70MB download and install seems to detract from that a TON, b/c I CAN'T simply log into any computer and play a game.

Beyond that, you're left with something that's free, but also lacks depth of playcalling, substitutions, onside kicks, and so on. Not even to mention GM stuff like trades, free agents, and even drafts and retirement. While it is a football RPG, once the play starts, everybody's number turns to "00" for some reason, so I have no idea about the name of the guy who just made a play, and it doesn't even display it for you immediately following the play, so I don't have a personal connection with the players on the field.

Not trying to bash a free upstart product, just pointing out some of the not-inherently-obvious shortcomings with the game that anybody playing it would notice on their own the first time they fire it up.

Good analysis. I agree with much of what you wrote, but do take note that the game is still in the beta stage, meaning you are playing an incomplete product. I find this weird myself given that they are airing national commercials and really pushing advertisement hard on an unfinished product, nonetheless it has potential. This format can be continually updated, so the game will always be improving... something console based games cannot do. It also has very little risk to try, only your time

I got a team going.

Screen name is the same as it is here.

# 24 jyoung @ 11/06/09 11:37 PM
Kasey is right though, the clock milking definitely needs to be addressed.

I've got a team with Tony Dorsett and Dexter Manley as my legends. I love how if you feed it to Dorsett enough he eventually breaks one or two long ones.

Wish you could pull back the camera in this game, too. And audibles.

Those are the two things I'd like most.

# 25 jyoung @ 11/07/09 12:19 AM
Dorsett = god

Stats from a game I just played:

Quote:
15 carries
291 yards
5 TDS

# 26 pf8363 @ 11/07/09 12:35 AM
this game sounds like a blast im downloading it now

# 27 jyoung @ 11/07/09 01:00 AM
Damn, just had my first close game.

Had the ball down a TD with 0:20 to go but pulled it out 22-21 with a 80-yard TD by Dorsett and a two-point conversion with 0:06 left.

Dorsett's stats:

Quote:
15 carries
201 yards
3 TDs
My secondary is getting torn up and my QB sucks, so I think I need to boost those positions.

So far I've seen Dan Fouts and Randall Cunningham, both of whom have shredded my secondary.

# 28 jyoung @ 11/07/09 01:23 AM
See here's what sucks about the milked clock:

I just played a half where I had 0:09 seconds of possession.

Thankfully Dorsett was good enough to take the one play I had to the house for a TD as the half expired.

Final time of possession: 10:55 (him) to 1:04 (me).

Only reason I won this game (20-13) is because Dorsett is god and broke long TD runs with the few possessions I had.

# 29 jyoung @ 11/07/09 04:11 AM
Man, cheesers have no shot at all in this game aside from clock milking.

Just played a guy 4 levels higher than me who passed every down and obviously had all his points in his WRs and QB.

Since he forget to put any points in the offensive line, my two DEs both had a combined 14 sacks in the game with me calling nothing but 4-man fan rushes.

On offense, this dude blitzed 3/4ths of his team every down, which I tore apart with quick slants and screens.

And since there's no way to kick onsides in this game (thank God, because this guy definitely would have since he went for it on every 4th down and tried every 2-point conversion), my team just shredded his on both sides of the ball.

Alstott! He'd be cool to get.

My legends are; Lem Barney and Tony Boselli.

My strategy is to level them the most and build the rest of my team around those two. I run left often. Boselli has yet to give up a sack in 25 online matches. He has owned the likes of Deacon Jones and Youngblood. This game definitely rewards balance.

Yeah, wEEman you could probably tell immediately that clock milking was ridiculous. If anyone you play knows they are outmatched and they grab a lead....prepare to watch the playclock for the remainder of the game.

I guess you need 2 GB of ram to play this game? My computer is 4 years old, and only has 528 MB of ram. So no QHF for me.

I'm almost inclined to stick with single player games against the computer until the quitting and clock milking issues are addressed.

The AI is so good in this game that I played 7 games before realizing I was playing the computer, not a live opponent; what tipped me off is that the CPU wasn't going for it on 4th down like your average lobby player would.

Not a bad idea. FYI within the month a big update to the game is being released, cleaning up a lot of the game and expanding on features. This includes a system to handle quits. I still fear the clock milking.... big time. Have had some nightmare experiences with it already.

# 35 LIGHTNING @ 11/09/09 01:40 AM
Play clock is much too long relative to the quarter length.

# 36 Phobia @ 11/09/09 02:11 PM
This is a great game for me to play while I am at work. Nice, thanks for the heads up on it.

First game in

Teams:
ULL Ragin Cajuns (Me)(17)
vs
Chesnut Warriors (10)

A hard fought battle for the ULL Ragin Cajuns. I started out pounding the ball off the weak side and was picking up nice chunks of yards. Then they shut down my running game and forced me to pass. I ended up getting into field goal range and put up 3 points.

The Warriors came into the second quarter throwing the ball. On a 3rd & 9 they hit a streaking WR down the side line for a big long touchdown. Taking the lead 7-3 going in at the half.

Start of the 3rd quarter we both forced each other to punt. Then the Warriors had a nice long drive at the end of the 3rd that went into the 4th quarter and managed to hit a field goal taking the lead further 10-3.

I got the ball back with under 1:30 left. I connected on 3 or 4 nice long pass plays setting me up around the 30. Then 3 downs later I am looking at 4th & 14 with 17 secs left. I call a deep streaks and by the grace of god my WR caught it in the endzone. TIED BALL GAME 10-10

Start of over time I won the toss. Then started with my power run game. Just pounding it down their throats. Managing to setup a 30 yard field goal with 2 secs left. My kicker nailed it bringing in the win in over time.

13-10 ULL Ragin Cajuns WIN

Nice summary, Phobia! We'll have to play some games and get something going once this game is finally finished up.

My 2 legends are:

Tony Boselli - LT
Lem Barney - CB

I built my team around those two guys. I have a strong DB core, a power MLB who can stop the run, and a power DE to help him. Boselli is my key for running the ball with a mediocre RB, and the key to neutralizing my opponent's best DE.

Yea it is a tight little game. I like it cause I can play it at work when I am slow. But being that there is no pause function sucks. If I get a call I can't pause it and come back to the game.

But yea lets look at getting some games in. I am not sure how many games you have played. But I have only played 1 offline. No online games yet.

Lost my 2nd game.

21-17

Eric Dickerson ran all over me. 9 carries - 132 yards - 14.7 per carry - 2 TDs

Now my own Running back went off to going. 12 carries - 166 yards - 2 TDs

What lost me the game though is i was into the 3rd quarter when I got a client walk in and I had him sit at my desk so I had to minimize the game. By the time I come back it was 9 Penalties for 45 yards and they had the ball on their own 5.

I really need a pause key to be able to enjoy the game
