Forza Motorsport 3 News Post

When it comes to the car-collecting and car-upgrading games, you really only have two main players: Forza and Gran Turismo. So as a long-time racing fan, it was with great excitement that I cracked open the case of Forza Motorsport 3. The question is are you ready for Forza 3?

I’m not exaggerating when I say that Forza could be the biggest, most ambitious car-collecting game ever created -- I use my words carefully here. And Forza 3 is, without a doubt, first and foremost a garage-expanding, car-collecting beast of a game. The racing comes secondary, but if you’re looking forward to your next Forza fix, you already know this.

I have logged 123 races in my time allotted for review; I have 30 cars in the garage after various career rewards and purchases; I have driven over 600 miles in classes F all the way through R -- and I am only 6.2 percent of the way through the career mode at level 24.

It’s that big.

"While it sounds like a bad thing, it’s actually a step forward for the series. This leads to some extremely realistic races. While racing in an R3 class Porsche 911 GT3-RSR, I managed to go through a hairpin, a chicane and three sweeper corners side by side with an AI car, and we never touched doors. If you’ve played any racing game before, you know how impressive that is (the AI behavior, not my driving). The AI slowed appropriately for an upcoming corner to maintain its line, and accelerated enough to hold its ground. It was a moment of sheer brilliance, and it had me grinning from ear to ear."

Wow. Now that is tremendous progress in AI behavior from CPU cars for the Forza series.

Thanks for the extremely in-depth review of Forza 3, TCrouch. Well done.

Very well written review TCrouch. I don't think I can be anymore excited. Sucks we still have over 2 weeks before the release though.

As always Terry great review.

On another note, I am killing myself trying to beat your times in Trials HD.

Most of the reviews I read up to this point could have been summed up as "I heart Forza 3". Nothing but pointless fawning over the game and little more than rehashing of press release info. This review was well thought out and informative. While it is obvious you loved the game it is also clear why. Thank you.

Great review TCrouch, 1 request on my part, could you take a pic as far and high away from the car as possible. I want to get an idea of how flexible photomode is. Thanks again.

Thanks lnin0. I know you're going to have a tough time warming up to the game, based on what I've seen. I really had to think a long time on whether it was just "new game smell" or not. But in the end, it replaced pretty much everything else I own. As I re-read it, I think it was actually a bit more negative than I thought it was, but I think it's because I was trying to nitpick and point out all the stuff I didn't like. It was odd, because the overall tone sounded down on it, but it was anything but in my head.

I'll give it a shot Garnett (no pun intended).

Funny! I started just trying to complete some of the later levels and gave up. Haven't played that one in a while. I wish I had more time lol

I have always enjoyed the Forza series and really liked the review. I think you really nailed it in that Forza is a 'car-collecting and car-upgrading' sandbox, and a massive one at that, but there are still areas that fall short. Doesn't mean Forza isn't a fantastic game.

Too many people on gaming forums get hung up that 'if you are not FOR something you are AGAINST it". I can enjoy something immensely but that doesn't mean I am blind to its faults. It was nice to read a down to earth perspective on the game before it is released.

If I sound disappointed in other threads it is because I get sucked in every time T10 rolls out the hype machine for a new game. I get my hopes up that they will take their powerful position and push the sim genre even further on the console.

In the end my hopes are usually dashed, but for what it is and tries to be, Forza is a great series. What it lacks in racing pedigree is overshadowed by how much it packs in content and customization. It also doesn't hurt having some good leagues to race in.

"It feels so good, in fact, that someone who has never played a racing game before but knows how to drive -- in this case, my wife, for which the last point is debatable..."

Oh snap!

Which wheel is good with this game? Never played with a wheel before, sounds fun.

# 16 TCrouch @ 10/11/09 04:26 AM
The MS Wireless wheel is what I used, and what the game seems to be designed around.

Great review, Terry. I am personally not a sim racing fan, but you really described your experience well. This is what I appreciate in reviews: I'd know what to expect if I got the game (a good expectation).

Thanks for the review. Months ago, hearing about this game, I expected it to be awesome, and now the reviews have shown that it is a great game. The last racing game I really liked was PGR2, and this looks to be much better than that. See ya'll online!

This is an excellent review. I didnt expect it to be excellent but it was. The game sounds great and from the demo you could tell it would be a blast to drive. This is a MUST BUY
