NBA 2K10 News Post

Game Informer has posted Part 2 of their interview with lead feature designer Erick Boenisch and lead gameplay producer Rob Jones, as they talk more about NBA 2K10.

Quote:
GI: "Let’s shift the focus onto the court. What are the big changes coming to 2K10 in terms of gameplay?"

Rob Jones: "The thing that I’m the most excited about is the new Signature Play feature. What Signature Play is to me is really a big umbrella that takes what we started with, with signature style or whatever you want to call it in 2K7 with all the jumpers and dribble moves, expanding that to post packages—if you take all of that as one item and put it under this umbrella. We were doing signature celebrations and ambient stuff before, now we have signature facial animations. All of this brings these guys to life in the way that you would actually see them in the league. It doesn’t sound like much until you actually see it; it punctuates the rest of the game.

The biggest thing for me is the signature tendencies stuff we did with 82 games this year. At the beginning of the year one of the big things we wanted to do was portray players with individualized tendencies and abilities in a way that the AI could really replicate the way they play when you play against them. We built the system from scratch. We added 36 tendencies, plus we needed to add additional data as preferences that aren’t necessarily tendencies to get a better picture of what a guy does. The big thing for me was I was mostly a defensive player back when I was more athletic. [Laughs] The thing that made me smarter and better at doing that was I picked up on players’ tics really quickly. Their tendencies—what they liked to do and how they attacked the player that was in front of them based on their size or based on their speed—that stuff carried on for any particular guy every time they played. A great player will adjust. If you take something away from him, he’s going to do something completely different. But their preferences and tendencies to do things—those were quantifiable."

I don't think there is anyting wrong with the shooting in 2k. With the shot stick I feel that is one of their strongest aspects imo.

I was thinking nba live 10 this year after last years 2k9 frustartions with back door passes and no help defense. But if the gameplay is fixed I'm sticking with 2k again. Hopefully we'll know soon.

"Another fan requested feature is real-time practice. Last year we had a practice menu in the game where you could go set up a little scrimmage, but it was kind of simulated and your players would get kind of a stat boost based on that. This year with real-time practice you can actually go into a practice gym with your team and practice plays or go do a scrimmage or practice a signature shot with one of your guys. This is really cool for learning the signature shots of your players, learning to run plays in an environment that doesn’t count negatively against you. In years’ past people would have to learn plays in game situations, and that’s not really fun or fair because they are doing everything they can to win the game. This is another of those little icing on the cake features."

Another reason why I love 2k sports, they always listen to the fans, can't wait for this game to drop.

Wow, the improvements they made to the association has me intrigued. its just the gameplay im not sold on yet. if the demo plays the same as 2k9, i will pick it up on black friday.

Sounds like 2K is bringing the house. Let's hope they have all of the cards to pull this one out. I really love the stuff they have done with association mode as well.. Sounds tremendously promising.

Yeah I actually liked the way the game played last year so this sounds amazing this year.

I was really hoping for a demo and reading the gameplay improvements really cements that feeling but they're about to lose those release day dollars they woulda had from me because I feel swayed by Live 10 plus I get my hand on the demo. To be honest, they wouldn't have even received my money last year if it wasn't for Live 09's lack of response to button presses. While I've been a 2K rider for years, now, I always respect what Live has tried to do even if they didn't get my money.

This looks a rental, for me, then I will see if that makes me wanna give 2K some money, afterward unless they can get that demo out BEFORE the 2K10 release...maybe.

I'm fine with the shot stick, but it should be further exploited for giving you more control on the type of shot to pull out
I mean, look what type of control live 10 gives you just with LS + the button.
Imagine what could happen if the shooting system would be based on all the different combinations of LS & RS

thanks for part II.

Yeah I just got done giving Live another try again and I absolutely love the way they did shooting in that game. And the way the players plant their feet and pull up looks so smooth.

You know, one thing a lot of us franchise guys been really concern about, the sometimes very stupid trade AI, havent got any mentioning....

I'm worried....

I'm not even talking about teams trading superstars (or lack thereof) I've seen Rondo partner up with Baron Davis because Celtics decided to trade for him. I've seen Magic signing Jason Kidd off free agent when they have a perfectly healthy Jameer Nelson.....

Gawdam! Just how smart are these guys?! Just reading this article has made my head spin!! Of course we'll have to see if any of this pans out in the game but it just seems the guys at VC are operating at a whole other level.

I'm with you - I played about five seasons of franchise mode in 2k9 and I can't count how many times the CPU made a stupid trade or FA signing for a position they were already stacked at. I remember one instance where the CPU had the Jazz sign Steve Nash when they already had DWill.

But on the other hand, the hand, the CPU did manage to sign Hedo Turkoglu to the Blazers, something the real life Blazers couldn't do.

They have come with an unexpected solution to that problem with the gived option to control all teams at once !

lol Exactly! If there is any person on the face of this Earth that will even consider playing an entire season as all 30 teams just to avoid bad trades it will be someone from THIS site.

OS = Where people get excited about 10 day contracts and restricted FA features happen.

# 37 doublek @ 09/15/09 10:56 PM
Can Simballer shed some light on the trade AI improvement? I don't want to control all 30 teams and I don't want to rip the AI off just because they think Lamar Odom + 2 1st round pick is good enough to let Chris Bosh go.....

love that the franchise/association was improved so much despite it bein the best...its funny they have this attitude of constant improvement with kobe as their cover athlete.not saying they arent always like this but its a funny correlation...

You do know 2K gives us the same if not more shots on command.
