NBA 2K10 News Post

2K Sports has just posted another NBA Developer Insight, this one featuring the player tendencies in NBA 2K10.

Quote:
"Rob Jones here. You guys have known me for years as the game play voice behind NBA 2K and College Hoops. I haven’t been this excited about what we have achieved this year for NBA 2K10 in terms of Player Tendencies, since introducing you guys to Signature Style in NBA 2K7. I am truly excited about the huge step up in Tendencies that we are incorporating into our Signature Play feature. This year, we have allowed for unprecedented depth in our players from a different system of ratings, attributes, plays, and decision-making in AI. Let’s get into it."

So this is 2K's version of DNA and Synergy?

Great read... this game just needs to come out!

Everything sounds good. Hopefully the playcalling system isn't as clunky as Aholbert described it to be. I'm a little upset that Tony Parker still has his bald look in the screenshot.

Nice article. And that Fisher screenshot is GREAT! New face for Tony Parker?

"I noticed that Synergy’s tendencies"

Rob, I don't want to here about Synergy. Just stick to 82 games

"Another improvement to the UI that we have addressed is that when viewing a play, we now show you a ‘movie’ of the play so you can see where each player goes, as opposed to the flipbook last year."

Nice

Not sure how to interpret it. Especially after hearing that 82games.com lacked some of the information that they were really after. That to me translates to an "experimentation" when it comes to a feature.

Living Rosters will update the playbook based on your team/coach, so your main squad will be up-to-date. Trades will happen that completely changes the team dynamics and with that, playbooks will need updating as well. I am sure that will be discussed in a future Living Rosters Insight.
An insight for the Living Roster...hmm i dont know why the Living Roster needs its own insight unless that Chinese interview with Kobe turns out to be true about players being updated whenever they have a new hairstyle...as per someone translation...

so uh...that iverson thread about having his rows might be possible with an update if true...

EDIT: i had to google derek fisher because i didnt think he was that cut...and i was wrong lol

I guess you missed this

They physically tracked NBA games for us to derive the information we were looking for. The good thing is that while we built the system, they were flexible enough to accommodate changes to how the information was being delivered, in order to better recreate the players.

Pretty good. Movies of the plays are certainly a good call as the flipbook could get a little manic. 24 plays instead of 8 is very necessary. Obviously there are no dynamic playstets or else he'd have mentioned it. Dynamic plays are a must for next year's game though while having 24 plays is nice if you play someone enough they're going to figure out a few things you like to do and counter them. It'd be nice to be able to counter the counter.

As for the player tendencies this is something I'd have to play to endorse. Of course it's necessary and hopefully it'll work well, but until I see it I'm not going to drool over it. What I really want to know is if 82games.com is continuing to work within the game. If you read carefully it sounds like it was a one time partnership. They got together while the game was in development figured out the tendencies and that was the end. It seems asthough roster updates will still be up to the insider.

It's good that he mentioned it. That means he is aware what the comp is doing which has proven to be beneficial to the comps product and trying to mimic it. Nothing wrong with that imo. Best insight yet.

In 2k9, you had the option to practice plays in pratice mode. When I would let the CPU run the play, they couldn't even complete some of the plays. When I play these movies in 2k10, I hope all the plays are completed by the CPU and no just continuously broken.

I'm with you j.r. but the biggest problem with the playbooks in 2k9 to me were that they took to long to develop and they didn't always put players in the spots where they like to attack. Live's got the playbook authenticity down but if their playbooks can pull off those two things that will make the absense of real playbooks a little less painful.

I'm interested to see how all of these things play out hopefully they work well because they would go a long way in helping make the game a lot less predictable.

it actually might be fun to play the cpu? is that what i'm reading
but seriously it SOUNDS good but i'll hold off until i SEE how it's implemented and those screens look good they look like the players have human skin unlike a certain competitor

To play a dynamic CPU with evolving tendencies in this game would be awesome. I can't wait to get my hands on this game.
