EA has sent along a bunch of screenshots and an exclusive developer diary video that details the new Be A GM mode in NHL 10. Hope you all enjoy the video.
Finally! This may be the video game that truly captures the excitement around July 1st and the Trade Deadline. Receiving multiple trade offers on multiple Blackberries is fine and good but if NHL 10 truly captures the frenzy and confusion of both of those periods of the season then it will be a fun experience.
Love the idea of the Prospect Game but I don't see myself using it much. ESPN 2K5 had something similar but I ended up not using it as much in Year 20 as I did in Year 2 of my franchise.
For me, Eastside Hockey Manager 2007 was the pinnacle of hockey management games. Now, I know NHL 10 won't be anywhere close (for starters, real prospects in the CHL and overseas may be tough) but if it can make me feel like I had that type of control, we may be going places.
Although for next year, I would like some kind of feature that will allow teams to bid on players in the European leagues EA has in the game...for example, what the Leafs did to pick up Gustavsson etc. But oh well, what we got this year more than makes up for what the NHL series lacked in years passed and for what could have been.
Wow, this is looking amazing!!! I love how they're understanding how big the draft and free agnecy is!!! One of the biggest problems with NHL 09 IMO was the Dynasty mode, and now it's looking great!!!
Nice stuff, but if season length isn't customizable and I have to play 82 games I'll probably never see any of it. I don't want to sim games.
Oh and will this be a multiplayer feature ?
Man this has me so pumped up for this game. Not buying NCAA in favor of this is looking better and better. I played decades of seasons in EHM and if NHL's GM mode is a tenth of what EHM offered I see myself doing the same.

Same here. I'll doubt i will be at the trade deadline more then once, I as well don't want to sim games. I loose all interest if i start simming games and i don't feel that involved with the team.
I find it incredibly interesting to go into the stats page mid season and see how my players have preformed. Sorting by different columns and comparing to the rest of the league. Looking at the league leaders, comparing teams powerplay and penalty kill percentages. Knowing that i have made all those goals, my team that i control have the 5th best power play in the league etc..
If i have simmed games and see that that RW on my team that i struggle to score with and thinking of trading have absolutely been on fire while simming scoring in every game or my team has made a huge jump in the penalty kill statistics. I just loose all interest to continue with the save.

So play the games then...
I play the games and write franchises. Its not that bad...step outside your box.
the ultimate "GM" mode in a sports game i've ever played is by far College Hoops 2k8... if EA sports is headed in that direction with the NHL series, I will be so so so happy
CH2k8 is w/out a doubt imo an inferior game to what NHL10 looks like it will be (based on last years game and what ppl have said about the editions thus far) yet I am still playing 2k8 to this day... thats how good its coach mode is
I need blood, give me blood. That is the one thing this game is lacking. If someone get's highsticked make them bleed, thus creating a double minor. Or if someone gets a puck to the mouth I want to see some teeth flying. Who the hell cares if the game get's a "T" rating? Seriously do any of us actually care if the game is a T as opposed to an E10? I can bet any amount of money that game sales will not be down just because of a letter they might actually be up. EA has made a T rated simulation sports game with Fight Night. Why can't they do the same with the NHL franchise? Because to truly make a simulation hockey and represent everything that happends on the ice any given game they need to make the next step, and step over the boundery, and cross into the rated T thresh hold.
I am sure you weren't really looking for an answer, but here is one anyway.
Yes it really would affect sales, or else they would do it. Kids play video games and parents have to buy kids video games. Kids cannot buy those kind of rated video games and must get parents to do so. I am guessing you would be very shocked to learn how many people would not get the game with a worse rating. Not something the NHL or EA want to tackle.
Can adults like us handle it, sure. If you play hockey you see that stuff often anyway. However, you know how conservative this country is and over sensitive. As long as games have ratings this game a long with all other hockey games with the NHL and NHLPA license will keep it rated as is.
Chase man, you are not helping with making having to wait until September any easier! With each update I swear I feel my time doing much of anything else except play hockey (and watch it) with be practically nonexistent. This game looks amazing, you guys really want a hat trick for Sports game of the year and you want it with a hockey game.
Blood does not belong in "team sport" video games, period, nor should it belong unless it's a true "fighting sport" such as MMA, boxing or professional wrestling. Yes, we know blood is part of team sports but it always comes as a result of an accident or some horrible occurrence. I'd feel sick to my stomach if a game came along that could potentially replicate the events of the Clint Malarchuk or Richard Zednik accidents.
Why is blood such a big deal in hockey games, anyway? Are people still on that Swingers shtick from the late '90s? If you want to make Gretzky's head bleed so much, play NHLPA '93, it's still out there...
/rant. But I still like the idea of GM Mode and would like to try it out for myself. September couldn't be further away.
I'm kind of a stats geek, so "Be a GM" will be loads of fun for me.
This mode sounds very detailed and quite involved. For me...it's going to be great to have things evolving with my dynasty right in front of me, in text. Rather than just having to use my imagination to keep dynasty mode interesting.
Solid gameplay and a rather deep dynasty experience, should keep me playing NHL'10' for several months.
do u know how many kids play halo, spiderman, transformers, batman, tony hawk, skate, cabela games, incredibles, fantastic 4, rock band, guitar hero, ironman, street racing games, ghostbusters, kink kong, star wars, hulk, ninja turtles, or x men. these are just a few games that 99.999% of parents would buy for kids that are rated t and halo rated m. Parents do look at the ratings but i think if a 6 year old who loves to play hockey and who wants the game really really bad would get it even though its rated t. parents know that even though hockey is rated t it wont give there child nightmares about blood. its just hockey. if hockey was rated t they would have com and sence to know its only bec it has a little fighting or some blood and that would not cause them to leave and say dont you ever play hockey games again. no parent is just going to walk in see nhl (a sport that there kid watches everyday) is rated t and then walk out with no nhl.
you cant say that people would be suprised to see how many sales they would lose when they would lose none. i am guessing youd be very shocked to learn how many people would still get the game with a higher rating. Also the reason they havent done it yet i bec theres more to focus on then just spending all there time putting blood on there face once every 10 games; not bec they would lose sales.
i dont care if they did or not, its pretty pointless to me. i dont care for the gm mode either. all i want is to do is lead calgary to the cup and have amazing gameplay and beat some chumps online with amazing gameplay. but since there gameplay is already top notch why not spend some time on what lots of people want. i hate sport games that dont focus on gameplay and then put extra modes in it.(ncaa football 10). the nhl series is the definition of how a sports game should be made
The wish for blood is irrelevant anyway. the NHL will never agree to add blood to their game.
The last game to have blood in it was NHLPA 93 and that only had the license for the NHLPA and not NHL license.
The following year's game, NHL 94 had the NHL license, but the blood was removed because the NHL does not want it's league name associated with something that is "too violent".
That's strange, Sportsmats, because my copy of NHL 09 HAS A E (Everyone 10+) rating, which EA will ensure they keep. To say that kids shouldn't play the game is ridiculous.
How will the games be handled in GM Mode? By that I mean will it be like Head Coach, were you are not actually playing but coaching or some sort of spectator mode perhaps.
But kids shouldn´t play this game. If I dont remember it wrong, the age mark on the box (PEGI) is 16+. So it is no game for kids and it is the parents damn responsibility to control that their kids under 16 doesn´t play the game!
Edit: Confirmed that it is 16+ that is the age-mark for the NHL-games. (Just look at this screenshot and see the mark in the corner down to the left) http://www.webhallen.com/pic_large.php?id=88522
So this is no game for kids. I dont understand why they should play a game that they are not allowed to play.
That's the European rating.
The North American rating for NHL 10 is E+10. Meaning for people over the age of 10.
I just totally pre-ordered this game. So this is the new dynasty mode, that is amazing! The NHL series has been my favorite over the best few years, and this mode is making to be game of the year again!
LOVING what I saw in that video. It totally took me by surprise. I had almost resigned to the fact that we were getting an outstanding game for gameplay every year, but that they simply weren't intersted in adding GM depth. Time will tell how well done this is, but it looks like a dramatic improvement!
