"The first thing I want to talk about is the goalies in NHL10. We literally had one programmer and one animator working on goalies all year around. We know that there were some holes in the goalie last year so my challenge to our guys was to make a perfect goalie. I wanted to ensure that our goalies had the ability to save anything shot at them. Once we had that, we could then start to give back goals in a controlled manner and ensure that we weren’t creating any ‘always goals’. I gotta give the guys credit, they added over 150 new goalie animations including saves from the butt, new kick saves, reach backs and swipe-aways just to name a few which made the goalies extremely effective and much more dynamic.

Once we had the goalies to a state that we liked, we brought in some of the top EASHL players in the Vancouver area to try and find holes. The first thing they did was try all the exploit goals from 09 which were unsuccessful but they did find a couple situations where the goalies could still be improved. We took that feedback and made the final tweaks. I should mention that I’m also extremely pleased with our additions for user controlled goalies which I’ll speak about at a later date. I will say that people who play goalie in the EASHL are going to be very happy with the improvements we’ve made. The guys in the office are having blast playing as goalie."

NHL10... baa7 approved . Pretty impressive since you disliked 09 so much that you went back to 08.

Video 2 has "Stanley Cup Final" on the ice for those that were worried it only said Playoffs. Nice glove down on the boards!

Blog is up now too at http://insideblog.easports.com/archi...finements.aspx

This game is already above and beyond what 09 was. It's honestly way more than I was hoping for NHL 10. Buying it day one with no hesitation. I'm digging the NHL 10 crew and their connection to the fans

Also lol at "I like to take it from behind, the net."

Just looked at the Dev blog at http://insideblog.easports.com/ and THE CAPS HELMETS ARE STILL BLACK!!?!?!?!?!?! WTF?!?!?!?! WHY CAN'T YOU GUYS JUST FIX THE COLOR FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY!!!!

On another note, the videos look amazing! Animations are fluid, puck is reacting better and the crowd looks AMAZING in clip 3. Also glad to see the curve shot being gloved down like it should be.

Diggin' it...they have my $60.

I really really hope they have good (or at least relevant) stat banners (PP%, PPK%, etc...).

Is the NHL dev team good at this or what? Just some fantastic improvements on display there.

3 GREAT videos there. I'm loving this game more and more and it's quickly becoming my most anticipated game ever. I preordered it today and I couldn't be happier.

But to go along with the videos here, the subtle things like (in the 3rd video, at the beginning) the D-man shifting his weight and skating from right to left just before he takes the shot just looks absolutely incredible. Maybe it isn't new, I'm not sure, but just the little things like skating, look ridiculously real in this game.

Color me impressed. Much appreciated EA.

(EDIT- it's not at the beginning of the 3rd video, it's actually at the end. The guy I'm talking about is the one that takes the shot from the point.)

Looking good. The 2 things I really liked were the goalie animations which looked a lot better and realistic and also the way the defense played forcing the dump. Gotta love that one

I am wondering a couple things.

A) will a player fall over when he runs into an opponent laying on the ice or will he be able to jump / step over the body

B) can you bump goalies without tumbling down

bill2451:I agree, they need to have a "panic" mode for goalies. when they think the puck is behind them or trickling, they should begin to flop around etc. in desperation!

Awesome videos.

Goalies, puck physics, and teammate AI were the major issues in '09, and all three seem to have taken huge strides for '10.

I was excited about the game before watching these gameplay vids, now I'm absolutely frantic to get my hands on this years game.

The AI improvements, passing, and puck physics alone have me pumped. Defensive AI especially, that the CPU will now clog the neutral zone and try and force a dump and chase at the blue line in addition to the puck being alot more loose and you having the chance to actually get down in the corners and retrieve it, and if not successful be able to pin someone up against the boards really makes the game that more realistic, gritty and less end to end. That alone to me is huge being more of an offline guy. Are the goalies perfect? no, but the're a far step up from 09, with all the other additions to the game this year I think I can deal with that and not be all that upset.
Agreed on all points. I think that the quality of this series over the last three years and the work by the dev team might leave us a little jaded. To really understand what these guys have done and continue to do, pop in NHL 06 or even better, give NHL 2003 a go.

...and after you do all that...you get a good fashwash in on Sidney for whining about his penalties...
