NBA Live 10 News Post

ESPN has posted an interview with some of the NBA Live 10 Producers.

Quote:
ESPN: "But we've heard this same 'building a foundation" line for at least three years now with this game. Why should we believe anything will be different in Live 10?"

NBA Live 10: "It's easy for me to say, hard for you to believe. I think ultimately we can say it right now but until we show you software from NBA Live 10, that will be the determining factor on whether or not you believe me. I think that what we can say is that 07 was a complete technology re-write in terms of gameplay, then we saw big jumps in 08 and big jumps in 09, but it's still not where we wanted to be. But I think the beauty of this is we've got a new guy who is leading our gameplay effort, and having Mike Wang gives us a new and fresh perspective on what our game is all about."

I have a tremendous amount of respect for the guys over there and consider many of them to be my close friends. Here are the points I was trying to communicate in some of those "quotes" that have been debated on OS the past couple of days:

1. 2k porting from old gen and covering up problems with animation. 2k and EA obviously chose 2 very different paths when moving from the last gen of consoles to the current. given the resources at 2k, porting the old gen code up to 360/PS3 and re-writing "chunks" of the game each year was probably the best strategy for the team. it allowed us to shove in a great deal of content without having to rebuild the game from scratch. however, I was admittedly frustrated with several aspects of 2k's gameplay while I was there. And for reasons I don't want to delve into, they just weren't getting fixed. I wouldn't say we tried to cover up those problems with animation... but the animation work we were doing certainly did mask some of the flaws or at least let many consumers look passed them. so one of the reasons I approached EA, was because I felt that Live wasn't suffering from those same problems and I saw a tremendous upside with the game they were building. and I believe, between the 2 games, Live is actually better positioned for me to reach my goal of making the ultimate hoops sim. and that's something I hope you guys will see as well next fall.

2. the window dressing comment. what I meant by that was, 2k does a good job differentiating players via animation. IMO, that's 2k's biggest strength. but there wasn't really a huge commitment to differentiating players via the under the hood logic. Live, on the other hand, is just the opposite. there is so much logic in the underlying systems to try and get players to play like their real life counterparts. I mean, that's the primary goal of Dynamic DNA. but the animation component just isn't up to par yet. I don't want a game that has one and not the other because it'll either be pretty and stupid, or ugly and smart. our goal with Live 10 is to make sure that we capture both the look as well as the brains.

You sir are taking on a bold challenge, and in the same breath you have upped the expectations on yourself.

I wish you the best

Thank you for making me feel like I was right about my statements.

Also thanks for clarifying your words on the interview overall and allowing people to understand you weren't dumping on 2ksports after leaving the company. I even said in one of my post, you were training a guy before you left to carry on where you left off, that is respect enough right there.

Overall good interview and good clarification. Live 10 is definitely in my purchase future, thanks to you, Marcus and the others who have come here to share info with us.
Man shadows, you and I were taking blows in the 2k thread for basically saying everything Beluba just said right there.

I would say welcome to the dark side, but there is nothing dark about this team.

They are legit programmers and producers, and seem to really care about this series.

They even open admitted that lack of animations and not being able to do certain things because of it, even frustrates them and they are working on the problem. Also stating that player models and stadiums will be done better along with authentic sounds etc added.

These guys are really trying to make this series the real deal.

Welcome DC, I hope you don't be disappointed.

This is why Live 09 is better than the competition's game this year!!!

Video Proof of real sim-gameplay!!! And the true advantages of footplanting and DNA.

Live has my attention as well. Too much slider work has to go into making the game play right in 2K, and once it does, that still doesn't address player and team tendencies.

If Live can get animations at the 2K level, i'm in, because Live has much better AI and help defense (which still needs work), and then u have 365 DNA on top of it.

But in it's current state, Live 09's animations are pretty horrible.

I bought both games this year, and truthfully, 2K9 is better (I don't think anyone can dispute this). Animations are smoother, gameplay mechanics are more functional and responsive (blocking, rebounding, even shooting).

But I've traditionally always been a Live supporter, which is why I still bought it this year. I'm hopeful that Live '10 will see a huge leap forward for the franchise. When you look at what Beluba did with the 2K franchise over the years, it's hard not to feel optimistic about Live's future.

Having said that, talk is cheap. And with all due respect, EA needs to put up or shut up. Until shown otherwise, 2K is the king of basketball and it really doesn't matter how outdated their gameplay engine is because they still find a way to make it work year in, year out.

I'm not doubting that Live can overtake 2K in the near future. In fact, with Beluba joining the development team I think it's inevitable. But the time for talk is over. It's time to see results. With Live '10, they absolutely must deliver. Especially after coming out so early on to hype up the game. Sean O'Brien is right about people feeling skeptical, and they have every right to feel that way. In the words of George W. Bush: "Fool me once... Shame on.... Shame on you?"

The one reason why I can't say Live>2K for this year..From the crowd to the players jumpshots to the hoop nets(yea baby had to get that one in there!) it's needs a big step up. The talk every year has our attention..And ya know we'll just see @ E3 whats in store for us!

And maybe someone should send Rob that player tendency quote directly Or should I? *cough*

No doubt in my mind this will be the better sim in 10... 2k has been going downhill since 2k7 imo. 2k9's default gameplay is abhorent.

IDK who Mike Wang is but he seems like the spearhead to this revamping of NBA Live 10, I hope so. GODSPEED!

I got hype about 2K9, bought it, saw the unrealistic simulated stats, and thought and this is the "BEST"
Play Live 09 and play with new DNA and your answers will be there.

EA Sports overall has really been quite underrated lately. Right now, their soccer (futbol), hockey, and golf games are already considered the best representations of the actual sports, and Madden is starting to generate a lot of good will thanks to the great developer interaction in that forum. I'd say if the Live developers continue to learn from the rest of their fellow EA development peers, this is going to be a GREAT year for EA Sports and sports fans alike.

I totally agree with you. Its a feature that people can really use as a cheating tool since they cant run sets and can play solid defence. Now amare can run the floor with the best but still not every play. In nba live 09 speed and strenght to be honest are nonexsistant . I was on a fastbreak with lebrone james and pau gasol caught up with me and foul me! I had a least 7 feet distance!
