UFC 2009 Undisputed News Post

Videogamer has posted their hands-on preview of UFC 2009 Undisputed.

"In gameplay terms, these different victory conditions mean you might be taking a pummelling from your rival, but then suddenly deliver a kick to his head that sends him staggering back. Or perhaps you'll have an opponent pinned beneath you, but then he'll swiftly grab your fist and force you into a painful arm lock. A fight might be a long and drawn-out slug-fest, or it might end in seconds. It's all down to your skills, your tactics - and above all else, your ability to react.

You could spend more time on the floor than on your feetThe Mixed Martial Art fighters of UFC have a range of backgrounds, but each character is classified as being specialised in two styles from a list that includes boxing, kick-boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling and Brazilian Jujitsu. Some guys will be better at standard face-to-face smacking, others will fare better when they're twisting the other bloke into a fleshy knot. Either way, you're going to have to learn the controls for both situations."

That was one of the better hands-on articles.

Yeah...the hands on articles are just building on the hype, if the game was horrible they'd mention it, you know? It's gonna be awesome when this drops!

One thing that stood out to me is the fact that they said most fights wont go to a decision...I dont want a submission or knouckout happening every match.

In theory a match can be decided by judges at the end of three (or sometimes five) five-minute rounds, but in this game you'll inevitably win by trapping your opponent in a submission hold, or by knocking them clean out cold.

I wouldnt take that as confirmation that matches wont go to a decision.

1) The author seemed to know little about MMA and was writing if for an audience he assumed knew little about MMA.

2) Going to a decision depends on how you fight. This is a different game but I was amazed by all of the people who used to complain that you could never fight to a decision in Fight Night 3 because I used to do it all the time. I used to fight at a realistic pace and would get decisions against the CPU all the time.

I see the same thing happening here. If you fight every fight agressively and going for a knockout, fights wont go to a decision often. But if you fight (and face people who fight) at a realistic pace, I'm sure you will see decisions.

That bothers me too. I want to actually have close fights that end up in decisions. I don't want to see knockout or sub every time I fight.
Like aholbert said, I've got to wonder how they play. I know when the game drops we'll be seeing "ZOMG My guy is gassing in the 1st round, whyyyyyyyy?" posts because people are just throwing bomb after bomb and missing. Also, if one of the people playing the game sucks, then you're likely to get a finish, you know?

I am willing to bet that it's slanted more towards finishes than decisions though, because they want the game to be fun for everyone. Look at how much everyone's bashing Machida for being boring and taking fights to decisions....they didn't want the game to become that either. Tough line to walk.

This just doesnt worry me. For example, weve probably seen 4-5 videos of people playing this game. What have we seen in every video? Nobody tries or even attempts to block. Shoot, I think I've only seen one guy attempt a takedown. Why? Because its easy to pick up the game, mash the buttons and throw punches and kicks. Once people learn how to block, takedown and defend submissions, I think you will see more decisions.

Didn't they originally announce that they would release a new version every year?

If thats the case, then I could handle fights rarely going to a decision if thats really the case. I'm sure we will have alot of problems with the 09 version that will be cleared up in time for 2010. Decisions or not, I'm pretty sure this game will keep me busy all the way up to the next release.
