Online gaming has become very popular in the last decade. One reason it has become so popular is because people love to compete. And when people compete, they do so to see who is best. However, in the online world, it seems that no matter how good you are, there is always someone better. Still, inevitably, someone has to be number one -- even in the online realm.

So with that thought in mind, I recently began my quest to become the number one online player in NHL 09. Here is a little of what I have encountered during my endeavor

Great article Will. I've played over 700 games online this year and can relate to everything that you said. My rank fluctuates between 500 and 700. I think if I had the stomach to go full bore slimy cheese from the onset of every game I might be able to reach the top 250.

I played somebody last week who was doing the 'warping' exploit you mentioned. The one where their player goes from lying on the ice to skating full speed in an instant. He was kind enough to tell me how to do it. If you haven't figured it out already, you just press 'LB' after you get hit and "woila" like magic
you are back on your feet. Hope that's help you on your quest and I can't wait to read more from you.

We have to fight also. I've played like 5 games with the coyotes and Carcillo hasn't been to the penalty box. That has to change, this is hockey not soccer!

Its simple, if you want to win at any cost - cheat.

NHL 09 will encourage it in every sense.

The problem is that on the cover it says 'NHL' 09, but the game online plays nothing like hockey at all. The last patch made it even harder to try and win by playing proper hockey. It forces you to be a dirt bag.

To the topic poster : You do realise that being number 1 in NHL 09 is not the same thing as being the best?

I think that you are sacrificing something so much more important about yourself by questing for glory at any cost. The sad thing is there is no glory to be had at the end of the day. You would stoop so low for the illusion of achievement. No one will know who you are, no monuments will be erected in honor of you. All you end up doing is joining the ranks of those who burn other people for nothing. I can understand setting yourself the goal of becomming number one but at what cost?

People will argue that it is only a video game and that it is not real life and that it doesn't matter. Crap! Playing online you play against real people, by cheating you are ripping people off!

If you cheat you certainly increase your odds of winning, but winning through cheating doesn't mean you are a better video game hockey player, it just means that you aren't good enough to win properly. Infact if you didn't win through incessant cheating then it proves that you must really be pretty crap.

To be fair, I think every loss a cheeser has is the equivalent of 5 losses because you use unfair advantages and still couldn't win. Therefore multiply your loss stats by 5 and see how impressive your figures look. How would it affect your ranking?

The top 100 of NHL 09 online is filled with the biggest cheats playing, by ascending that list all you are doing is promoting to the world that you are amongst the worst and lowest gamers out there. Exploiting poor programming in NHL 09 is the equivalent of doping in real sports to get the unfair advantage. No doper who wins and is later found out is still applauded for their success.

If you really wanted to be the best, then do it by not cheating, thats how you know you really are the bloody best. To be honest it is doubtful you will be no.1 by being the best through playing fairly, but their is a chance that you could be...that is the real glory of human achievement, overcoming the impossible by not stooping to the rubbish aspects of life. Be glorious yourself and when you do achieve glory people will be moved. To me, that is a better goal to chase down.

One last thing, it sounds like you are a very skilful video gamer, don't become ordinary through cheating man, use your skill, doping makes you reliant on weak things and reduces your overall capacity.
