News Post

2008 was a fantastic and eventful year for me. I started a new job. I moved to a new city. I got engaged.

But the best part was that I got to experience one of the better years of sports gaming in recent memory, mainly because of the introduction of NCAA Football 09’s Online Dynasty mode. (Here is to hoping my fiancée does not actually read my articles…)

Although not a completely new concept, NCAA 09’s Online Dynasty provided a glimpse into a probable future of sports gaming. The dynasty/franchise has been highly buzz-worthy on the online front this year and looks to expand into other titles in 2009.

So, is it fair to call the online dynasty/franchise the future of sports gaming? Maybe. Let us discuss…

THANK YOU for this article. I am so tired of game reviews completely ignoring the fact that most games cannot do the following:

Form a multi-season league.
Add a small handful of REMOTE human players.
Have the rest of the teams managed by CPU.

It boggles my mind that I can't do this in 2008 when I was doing it with my friend in 1999 with High Heat Baseball by simply sharing the league file between our two (remote computers).

Actually if games would just support more than one human-controlled team in a dynasty league and permit an online selection if human teams pop up on the schedule, it's done. Leave it to the players to pass the league file around. On today's consoles that can easily be done. Better would be to build it all in like NCAA or NHL.

I REALLY hope NBA 2K or Madden finally wise up and add this functionality.

I've yet to fully experience an online dynasty, but I guess you could say I'm used to being "in the past". I didn't get a PlayStation 3 until this summer, and up to that point I'd never played a game online in my life. It's all new to me, but I will check it out sooner or later.

I hope it isn't so futuristic into a game's significance that the producers give up on Human v.s. AI gameplay to focus on Human v.s. Human online play.

I'd be all over and online Head Coach mode with multiple seasons... I'm an old fart too....

However the game would have to improve a tad on the gameplay visual side.

I sure hope Online Dynasty is NOT the future of gaming. If it is I will probably give up sports gaming. I have zero desire to play online because very few, and I mean very few people actually play "real" football online. They are all cheesers looking for gimmick plays to run over and over. All they care about is winning, not playing a realistic game of football.

Along with that I am a definitely an introvert which is yet another reason I have zero desire to play online against other people.

I just want to play a good game of football against the cpu, is that too much to ask? Gaming shouldn't have to be a social event and if they try to force gamers in that direction then it will be game over for me. We should always be given the option of gaming being a solo experience where a person can relax and unwind in their own home while playing against the computer.

my friends and i love being able to play the four of us on a team. we have 1 things we look for.1)player lock 2) ability create or edit players to be us and play a couple years. recently we created 4 lbs and played a 3/4 defense at airforce. we simed the offense and just played the defence 4 years. it was great. but if we could have an online way to do it that would be outstanding

I love how some games are doing the whole control one person thing...and it would be nice if NCAA gave us some sort of a pass scale thing for practice where we could do 7v7..and then take our players online.

Online dynasty is great. Previously, if I wanted to do a co-op dynasty or franchise with a friend, it was an ordeal to get together and just play a game and then trade off, play my game, etc.

Now we can play our games at the same time, or whenever we want, and still do all the recruiting and looking at stats that we want without having to share a controller or even a room (not that I don't like sharing a room with my friends)

As much as people say larger Online Dynasties wouldn't work, I disagree. Look at all the ODs ran through just Operation Sports. Can't you imagine eleven of the biggest sports videogame websites coming together for an OD with each site getting one conference? I think that would be ****ing awesome

I too was skeptical about online dynasty play but after joining 3 in the past week, it is a blast...I mean you recruit against real people which changes your strategy because you dont want any human opponent to get the stud rb you are recruiting. Also playing people online and even playin the computer adds a little pressure cuase you sure as hell dont want to lose..damn all this talk has me wantin to drag my *** out of bed and do some recruiting
